24.01.2022 Just letting you know in advance ... we've had reduced parking fees at Victoria Quay since 28 April to provide fee relief during the COVID-19 pandemic but from Monday 12 October (after the school holidays) they're going back to full parking fees. So, it will be $2.50/hour instead of $1.50, with the all-day parking fee back to $10 instead of $5. See more info on our website: https://www.fremantleports.com.au//full-parking-fees-reins

24.01.2022 Great to see plenty of vehicles being imported through Victoria Quay. A clear sign the WA economy is moving along well and it's Fremantle Ports' role to facilitate that. Year to date, non-containerised Inner Harbour trade is up 9.6% on March figures, with new motor vehicles up 17.7%. The eastern berths on both sides of the Inner Harbour handle the vast majority of Western Australia's break-bulk trade and all of the motor vehicle trade. #fremantle #freo Motor Trade Association of Western Australia - MTA WA Fremantle Chamber of Commerce

22.01.2022 #flashbackfriday to a very historic visit to Fremantle in May 1927- Following this week's announcement that Gage Roads Brewing Co will be redeveloping A Shed on Victoria Quay, we have a look at some of A Shed's history. The British Battlecruiser HMS Renown enters port, berthing alongside the new A and B Sheds Victoria Quay. On board were the Duke and Duchess of York, (the future King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth), who were on their homeward journey to Britain following their... Australasian tour. A highlight of their visit to Australia was officiating at the opening of new Parliament House in Canberra. Their visit to Australia created huge public interest at the time. It was reported when they sailed into Sydney Harbour, they attracted Australias first gathering of more than one million people. The photos show the royal couple being met on arrival by officials, including the Mayor of Fremantle and a huge crowd on the quayside and along roadway exiting the wharf. The two images take from the aeroplane are possibly the earliest aerials taken of Fremantle Harbour. A and B Berths had, at the time, been recently reconstructed (1925/26) with the two new much larger A & B sheds being built. The sheds replaced two smaller buildings previously utilised by the Public Works Department during the construction of the harbour. These smaller sheds catered for the North-West Coastal trade. Both sheds were relocated to the wharf area in 1903/04. The new Sheds and surrounding wharf area had the capacity to accommodate larger vessels and handle a greater tonnage of general cargo. A Shed, as initially constructed, had quite a unique roof profile with a dormer roof at the eastern end and a curved roof line following the contour of the railway line at the western end. Both features were removed in later years Before the advent of containers, the cargo transit sheds facilitated the handling of cargo through discharge/load and receival/delivery operations. Cargo was transported to and from the wharf by rail or truck and in the early days, horse and cart. A heritage feature of both sheds today is the interior shed office which was utilised by the Shed Supervisor, Wharf Foremen, Manifest Clerk and HM Customs. Tally clerks counted goods discharged/loaded, the tally sheets were then reconciled to the shipping manifests. 22.01.2022 #flashbackfriday to Friday 11 May 1962 the smart little Sitmar liners Castel Felice (12,150 ton) and Fairsky (12,464 ton) officiate at the opening of the second stage of the Passenger Terminal (G Berth). Castel Felice arrived at 6.30am that morning with Fairsky berthing alongside F Berth some hours later at 11.30am. Both liners sailed late afternoon that day. Although only small ships they had quite a large passenger carrying capacity, Castel Felice 1540 and Fairsky 1461 pa...ssengers. The following day (Saturday) Himalaya berthed at the Passenger Terminal. On Sunday 13th May 1962, the Terminal was open for public inspection. It was an extremely busy day with more than 18,000 visitors touring the building. The two migrant photos show passengers from Castel Felice in her earlier visits to Fremantle, Mr and Mrs Helmut Fehse and their son Reina arrived in September 1958. 19.01.2022 #flashbackfriday to the west end of Victoria Quay in 1905 (and our continuing series about A Berth and its sheds). Looking across the intersection of Cliff and Phillimore streets and over rail yards towards what was the very first A Shed. This shed, together with a similar-sized B Shed, were previously utilised by the Public Works Department during the construction of the harbour. Relocated to the wharfside in 1903/04 both sheds catered for the north-west coastal trade until ...they were replaced by larger buildings in 1926. 13.01.2022 #flashbackfriday to 1967 - The Port Authoritys 80-ton floating steam crane Pelican is about to off-load two 75-ton capacity rear dump ore trucks. The Australian made WABCO trucks were shipped over from the Eastern States and were two of thirteen such trucks being built for Mt. Newman Mining Companys northwest operations. The Port Authoritys workboat Baleen can be seen alongside the floating crane. She assisted in towing Pelican from the shipside to the unloading area at... B & C Ramp. In the background at A Shed is a State Shipping Service freighter, and what looks like a dredger further behind. The Port Authoritys vessel Lady Mitchell is moored alongside Forrest Landing at the very western end of Victoria Quay. Port Authority staff members and two police officers from Victoria Quay Police Station are seen observing the unloading operation from the wharf side. B & C Ramp was regularly used in years gone by for heavy lift cargo operations utilising the 80-ton crane, particularly for cargo vessels alongside the western end of Victoria Quay. 12.01.2022 Have you ever gone past the port and wondered why ships at berth sometimes have water streaming from the bow? What youre seeing is water used for cooling being returned to the harbour. That seawater is drawn in to cool hydraulic systems that operate mooring gear. Today, the AEC Diligence at Berth 2 was doing just that. Anchors are lowered at berth when the Harbour Master instructs it, usually as an additional precaution during bad weather. ... So whys the crew member using a hose? Well, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority periodically requires ships to test their emergency systems, including fire-fighting systems as part of their port state control. So, there you go ... water, water everywhere! Ports Australia

07.01.2022 #flashbackfriday to February 1972 - the beautiful, classic Norwegian America Line cruise ship Sagafjord arrives at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal. The 24,000-ton liner was cruising from New York, visiting the South Pacific, Australia, South East Asia, and Japan. Carrying just 382 passengers, Sagafjord at that time was considered one of the most luxurious ships in the world. She berthed at F Shed in the morning, 9th February, and sailed around midnight the same day. Berthed... immediately behind Sagafjord is Austasia Line’s passenger/cargo vessel Australasia which had arrived from Singapore a couple of days earlier. The day following Sagafjord’s departure, Shaw Savill Line’s Northern Star arrived from Britain carrying over 1300 passengers, many of them migrants about to begin a new life in Australia. Two days later the Russian liner Khabarovsk and the Greek liner Ellinis arrived from overseas. Ellinis which had sailed from Britain, was carrying over 1700 passengers including many migrants. Sagfjord was launched in 1964, entering service the following year, she had the capacity to undertake both cruises and trans-Atlantic line voyages for Norwegian America Line. In 1983 Sagafjord, together with her near sister Vistafjord, was taken over by Cunard Line. She served with Cunard until 1996, when she was chartered by Transocean Tours and renamed Gripsholm. In 1997 Gripsholm was sold to Saga Cruises and renamed Saga Rose. Saga Rose made a final call to Fremantle on 17 March 2006. She sadly ended her days at the shipbreakers in China in 2010. 04.01.2022 The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will again inspect close to 500 Fremantle properties this month for the destructive pest, red imported fire ants. The exotic ant species was discovered at two adjoining commercial properties at Fremantle Ports in November last year. RIFA is a significant invasive species which if established in WA, could severely damage the local environment, agriculture and our outdoor lifestyle. Continued surveillance is importan...t to make sure fire ants have not spread beyond the initial discovery. The departments next round of surveillance began this week across commercial and residential areas in Fremantle, with door knocks by department personnel to seek access to garden and outdoor areas to inspect for the fire ants. A RIFA Quarantine Area remains in place, extending from Port Beach, south to the South Fremantle Dog Beach and east to East Street. Movement restrictions prevent host material being removed out of the Quarantine Area which could harbour ants, such as potted plants, plant mulch, bark and wood chips, hay and straw, manure, soil, grass and turf or other organic matter. Machinery and equipment and shipping containers must be free from soil when moved out of the Quarantine Area. More information on RIFA and the departments response can be found at agric.wa.gov.au/rifa. Suspect ant sightings should be reported to the department using its MyPestGuideTM Reporter app or online at mypestguide.agric.wa.gov.au. 03.01.2022 For us, supporting the arts fits with being part of our great coastal community. We couldn’t have been happier to again support the City of Rockingham Local Government Castaways beach sculpture awards as major sponsor of the People’s Choice category. The winner this year was Richard Aitken, with his mesmerising Bait Ball. Castaways gives artists the chance to showcase their skills, using recycled and re-purposed materials. What a worthy winner! 03.01.2022 #flashbackfriday to September 1928 - in last week’s post we viewed the Fremantle Railway Station and the west end of Victoria Quay. In the distant background you could make out a cargo vessel on the southern side of the Inner Harbour entrance channel. Maritime History curator Michael Gregg and local historian Bruce Farrington were quick to identify that this steamer was in fact the Lygnern stranded on Beagle Rocks. Lygnern had arrived earlier from Europe carrying a full ...cargo of Baltic pine and other general lines of cargo. The following is an extract from the Fremantle Harbour Trust Annual Report at the time: On the 18th September last the cargo steamer Lygnern of 4,896 tons gross, built in 1920 and owned by Rederia Etreb Transatlantic, Gothenburg, Sweden, became stranded to the southward of the entrance channel to the Inner Harbour, and now lies on the western fringe of the submerged Beagle Rocks. The steamer was proceeding to an anchorage outside the Inner Harbour, she being unable to work owing to industrial unrest. She was in charge of a pilot at the time and he reports that the ship first struck some submerged object which caused the propellor to become jambed and afterwards dragged to her present position on the Beagle Rocks. The Trust Commissioners immediately issued a warning to mariners and the vicinity was swept as far as was possible without any obstruction being found that could possibly have been touched by the vessel. During the year just past the s.s. Lygnern Salvage Company, Limited, has discharged practically all the cargo in this stranded steamer, and is now taking measures, which it has strong hopes will result in the wreck being refloated. This however was not to be, with the wreck remaining upright and generally intact on Beagle Rocks for several years up until World War 2, before being considered a risk and if not a nuisance to navigation. The wreck was subsequently broken up and submerged with the use of explosives. 03.01.2022 #flashbackfriday to wartime Fremantle 1945 - interesting views of the Admiralty Floating Dock No 17 (A.F.D. 17) moored alongside A Shed, Victoria Quay (yes, we're continuing the A Shed theme). The dock had been based at the Royal Navy Depot at Reykjavik, Iceland and was undertaking the longest ocean tow in history, at that time, from Reykjavik to Sydney, a 16,000-mile voyage lasting nine months. AFD 17, which had been re-assigned to the British Pacific Fleet in Sydney, depart...ed Iceland on 13 September 1944, calling at the Clyde, Gibraltar, Aden, Cochin and Fremantle, before finally arriving in Sydney at the end of May 1945. The dock had suffered some damage during the many legs of the voyage to Sydney and consequently did not become operational on arrival. She was repaired at Morts Dock and Cockatoo Dockyard, however, saw no active duty with the British Pacific Fleet. When the war ended, she was transferred on loan to the Royal Australian Navy before finally being purchased by the Australian Government for 75,000 pounds in 1948. In her 22 years of service with the RAN, AFD 17 completed 641 dockings of RAN and Royal Navy vessels including tugs, frigates and submarines. Her last docking was the Royal Navys submarine HMS Taciturn in March 1964. Soon after she was withdrawn from service and sold for scrap. Before the dock was towed away to the breakers yard, her two electric cranes were installed at Fitzroy Wharf where they remained in use until the wharf was closed in 1991. In the photo looking west you can also see the submarine boom in the background. Images - State Library of Western Australia - 047158PD and 047105PD Information - Royal Navy Research Archive UK. 02.01.2022 In 1983, Australia II won the America's Cup, ending 132 years of domination by the USA. While the 12-metre yacht itself is on permanent display in the WA Maritime Museum, today one of its stored masts was moved out of A Shed, as the heritage building is readied to become Gage Roads Brewing Co new microbrewery and venue. Works on that will commence soon! It's an awesome mast, that just keeps going...and going. We wonder what stories it could tell, if it could talk! New York Yacht Club - Main Page
