25.01.2022 Hoping for a good drop of rain today. Yesterday was very very busy and to be honest, Farmer Phil and myself are exhausted! We have less than a handful of days off each year, but when there is heavy rain predicted, we declare it a couch day! Really hoping Farmer Phil doesnt get side tracked and has a day off! 24.01.2022 No life Lizzie here... when everyone else is tucked up out of the rain, here I am lining up every bucket and container I have to collect the drips of water from the shed gutter.... Yep, the drips!! As a girl that grew up in the Pilbara Region of WA, rain was a rare event and we would actually scoop it up as it was running down the roads in a downpour and save it for the gardens. So when I became a farmers wife with a cottage garden, I knew what I needed to do when it rained. We have had fairly steady rain all day and some of these buckets are at least half full... 23.01.2022 The first buds have exploded on the driveway trees. Every year I wait in anticipation to see how much they have grown. 5 years ago we planted 56 bare rooted golden elms. That was only the beginning, we replaced over 20 of them in the first 18 months, rabbits and galahs tormented us. 22.01.2022 Looking for somewhere to get all the family together and make some memories? Allow me to tell you about our holiday. There is over 20 of us together, aunts, uncles, grandparents, sisters and brothers, including five teenage boys. Trying to find somewhere that we can all stay together, but have our own space, somewhere where everyone feels like they are having a holiday and there is something for everyone to do, has always been a hard task. Late last year we found this amazi...ng property, Grayson’s Estate. Located just over an hour from Melbourne, it is situated on 42 acres, with three luxury residences. Tennis court, Infinity pool, spa, games room, huge dam for kayaking, outdoor chess set, billiards room and media room, means there is something for everyone. In the week that we have been here, we have not heard I’m bored once. We have left the property once to check out the local area and sample local produce. Other than that, it’s days filled with exploring the estate or outdoor fun, and nights sitting around as a family doing board games, watching movies etc. It’s not the cheapest accommodation out there, however at $375 per family group based on six families staying here, it is by far the best value. 16.01.2022 Its a bittersweet announcement today.... I want to celebrate that we can open again, but honestly its tough when so many of our loyal guests are still in Metro Melbourne... You guys are our main supporters and we so wish it was you being able to come travel as well!! Stay strong guys, theres a little bit of hope in the air. We promise we will welcome you with open arms before too long!!! For our fellow regional Victorians, we are ready and waiting. We are sticking to our 4... night school holiday minimum as we will be using contract cleaners for the first few weeks until we can hire and train more cleaners. 13.01.2022 Friday night means Fajita night! No less than 3kg of chicken, and more veg than required, but trying to make this meal stretch. Im not sure how many of our backpackers are joining us for dinner tonight, but were all covered if they all show up at the table!!! Had to abandon my normal means of cooking this in the wok, and its now in my huge @scanpan_australia 8.5L stew pot! Well 12 months ago that shed was a perfectly good shed. Bring in Dennis and his girls and each day the shed has been trashed. Im not complaining, I just want it to be known that I have spent this second lockdown on the farm surrounded by not only my own three teenage sons, Farmer Phil and Uncle Frank, but also all the male backpackers. I treat them like theyre my own sons, good and bad. Some days they make me want to pull my hair out, some days I want to adopt them and some days I forget that there are other females In the world. I feel like I am the only one out there that can multi-...skill, think ahead, have a practical brain... My father is an intricate piece of making this farm what it is today. 10.01.2022 So....had a massive realisation this weekend... it kind of went like this... I had one complete day off over the whole long weekend where I did not have to do any washing, ironing or laundry for the business. This is very rare. I decided to gut out the rumpus come laundry room. Massive job. I totally detailed the area. I was down on my hands and knees vacuuming the carpet with the nozzle of the vacuum. The carpet looks brand-new again. Out of the corner of my eye I saw our D...yson stick vacuum still on charge. I thought I would run that over the carpet too, even though I had just vacuumed. To my amazement I filled the container twice. I was seriously blown away. It was around that point that Farmer Phill walked in and I greeted him in a hot sweaty mess but excitedly raving about the facts of my afternoons vacuuming. I soon shared the news with the teenage boys, the neighbour, Uncle Frank... I noticed an ongoing pattern amongst them all. They did not share my enthusiasm or amazement. 06.01.2022 The garden always looks that bit more beautiful with freshly mowed lawns. From September through January we have to mow every other week. It takes about 15 hours to mow and edge the grassed areas from the driveway to Woodcutters Cottage. 04.01.2022 Sunday evening and we have just spent the last two hours relocating a million snails from our garden beds. I just cannot believe how many there is this year. So, Farmer Phil, our three teenage boys and myself, along with a mozzie or two, guesstimate that we removed over 1000 snails! Absolutely crazy. When it rains, I drag the whole family out. 03.01.2022 You gotta love an Irish mans white legs on a sweltering day! I’m sure it’s been a year since these legs saw the light of day. Uncle Frank HATES the cold and is mad for the heat. Yesterday it got to 36c on the farm and this boy was mad to be working in it! Whilst I was taking cover inside he was out mowing! Uncle Frank also celebrated his 72nd birthday this week. 02.01.2022 So its Sunday morning, 6.30am, and Farmer Phil and myself are on our morning walk, inspecting all the puddles from the rain yesterday. Its just glorious!! We are down near the back of the property, and I say to him can you hear a car? He says yeah its probably out on the main road. Anyhow we wander back to the house to check the rain gauge, and see a Woolworths truck outside the front door. I seriously think Ive placed an order and forgotten about it. But no, a very dear friend has arranged for delivery of food for us. An act of kindness that we were not expecting, but so touched by! Feel like the most loved person in the world right now! 02.01.2022 Pretty pumped with how the kitchen garden is coming along. This is the latest edition, a dedicated herb garden. I now have 4 massive raised veggie beds and now this herb one. All of them are positioned so Farmer Phil can manoeuvre his ride on mower around them... That was his only request.. Its kind of limiting me though, because, as I fill each one, I seem to miraculously NEED another one... 02.01.2022 It’s been a big 24 hours. Last night another one of our Murray Greys went in to labour. MJ didn’t progress well all night, so finally at 5 am this morning we decided to intervene. We soon realised that the calf was not presenting right. The local Vet, Damian, @moriac_vet came out and helped deliver this little guy. His front hoofs are turned in making it hard for him to stand. On top of this mums teats are very large making it hard for him to suckle. Tonight Farmer Phil mil...ked her and we bottle fed the calf. We are hoping with the added energy the calf now has from the colostrum, we will be able to get her attach at midnight when we try him again with his mum. All very time consuming, but so rewarding. 01.01.2022 Busy day on the farm.... not only did we have 5 lots of guests check out and 5 new families arrive, we also had two baby calves born today. Thankfully they waited to be born till after 2pm, so all the cleaning was done! Our incoming guests were absolutely delighted to be able to witness such an amazing experience.
