23.01.2022 I've become a bit obsessed with wasps! This image is from the Quarry Reserve and shows 2 different types of native Wasp nest. One of the species is a small black native Wasp that builds the small black hanging structures. ... The second type of Wasp has started building a structure near the end of the twig hanging down in the image that is paler and larger than the rest. I asked the European Wasp Control Project group on FB and they say that these are a nest of Australian Paper Wasps that look like European Wasps but are the good guys. The physical difference between European Wasps and our native look alike are small but apparently the structures they build can help a lot with identification. I have been told that the colder weather will probably kill off the larger Australian Paper Wasps leaving the original smaller wasps in peace once again. The Australian Paper Wasps predate on insects. #fc-WASP
