23.01.2022 Check out the changes over 4 years at GSR!! Want to take some flora shots for the Images of Jirdarup competition? Want to get close up to the plants? Then check out the George Street Reserve (GSR) section of the Jirdarup Bushland Precinct, where there are no fences. Please just look where you are walking (for your safety as well as looking after the plants) and also make sure your footwear is clean - were dieback-free and need to stay that way so the plants keep thrivin...g (helps to feed the black cockatoos). Thanks! George Street Reserve has grown so amazingly - check out these shots covering a four-year period of the Town of Victoria Park revegetation program! The quickest way to access GSR is to park on Anketell Street (see map). The aerial photo for the map was taken years ago, before the revegetation efforts were changing the whole look of the place! (In future look out for the roll out of the Sandpit revegetation!!) For more information about the photo competition please visit our website: www.friendsofjirdarupbushland.org.au Good luck! 18.01.2022 Seen our article on the restoration of Kent Street Sandpit that's in the Urban Bushland Council WA Inc's newsletter? It's hot off the press! The restoration and opening up of the previously locked Sandpit site by Town of Victoria Park will be a wonderful boon to the community - and community involvement in the restoration will be significant, with the Friends group playing a pivotal role (e.g. planting, weeding, watering, and events). It's great to read about all the differ...ent ways lots of folks around Perth are doing great things looking after the precious urban bushland at our doorsteps! 07.01.2022 Jirdarup means Place of Birds in the Nyoongar language. At Jirdarup Bushlands Spring celebration (got your free ticket yet?) youll see the two new bird watering stations that are now getting installed. These are funded by the Town of Victoria Park and a grant to the Friends from the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. The structures were designed and manufactured locally with the combined efforts of ToVP staff and Kel Steel (one of our valued photo competition sp...onsors!). They are a new and improved version of the original prototype. The design is a practical, low maintenance, and safe solution to supplying regular fresh water for our precious native birds, including the endangered Carnabys and Forest Red-Tailed Black Cockatoos that roost and feed in the area. See the photo captions for more details. As well as an invaluable and reliable water source for our birds, the structures are sure to be popular with bird watchers, helping to raise awareness of Jirdarup Bushland as a precious wildlife haven. Theyre a wonderful addition to Jirdarup, our Place of Birds. 07.01.2022 WEDNESDAY 25th - last day - last chance to see the exhibition! ... and to buy a lovely print (still some available at around the $50 mark when I was there on Sunday). Also, some prices have been reduced by the photographers - so get in quick! Here are the beautiful photos that won a second prize in our competition. Congratulations to these winners! I hope to have time to get even more photos up in the next few days. Sorry for the delays - I’m rather busy as I’m just days... away from submitting my PhD thesis (it’s on star formation in galaxies). The Images of Jirarup competition wouldn’t be possible without the support of our sponsors, like Galactic Cooperative; this socially responsible, worker-owned coop helps all sorts of organisations with innovative solutions to science, engineering, repairs and maintenance, technology, sustainablitity and workplace wellbeing and more. Find out more at Galactic Cooperative. Thank you to our sponsors for all their support! And special thanks to Perth Pro Lab for the beautiful printing and mounting of the photos! Post and photo credits: Fiona - and the lovely shot of the Town of Victoria Park's Kent Street Gallery-Victoria Park Centre for the Arts is by one of the finalists, Melanie Moore (her photo is the beautifully lit gum trees cradling the moon). Thanks for sending your photo of the Awards Night to us!
07.01.2022 What does a crow want with an empty coffee cup?!? Yesterday morning I spotted a crow flying up to a tree with a coffee cup In Kensington Bushland. Sorry I'm not a wildlife photographer, but see if you can see it in the two shots of the tree. I then happened to fluke a shot of it seconds later, flying off with the cup. I wonder what it's going to do with it? Thankfully litter is not normally a problem in our bushland. Maybe the crows are tidying up!! Photos by Fiona Saturday 15th August. BirdLife Western Australia (one of our lovely sponsors of our photo competition!)
07.01.2022 Thank you to EVERYONE who played their part today to make the spring celebration of Jirdarup such a great success! 03.01.2022 Entered the photo competition yet? Only 28 days left! https://www.friendsofjirdarupbushland.org.au/ Our competition is possible due in no insignificant part to the generous financial support received by government and political leaders mentioned here. The Town of Victoria Park has always been the stalwart financial supporter of FoJB, and we work hand in glove with the Natural Areas team. The Council, led by Karen Vernon, Mayor of Victoria Park , are leading the way with hi...gh priority greening initiatives for the Town. The Urban Forestry Strategy (https://www.victoriapark.wa.gov.au///Urban-Forest-Strategy) is one such example. Over and above the Town, we recognise the amazing assistance and financial support received from: The Hon. Kate Doust MLC Member for South Metropolitan (Labor Party) Hon Kate Doust MLC Senator Sue Lines Deputy President of the Senate (Labor Party) Senator Sue Lines The Hon. Tim Clifford MLC Member for East Metropolitan (Greens) Tim Clifford MLC Mr Ryan Chorley (Liberal for South Perth) Ryan Chorley - Liberal for South Perth WAs Treasurer, the Hon.
