AS IF ONE BIRD by Cathryn Vasseleu Intrepid voyagers from the Arctic, Great Knots are migratory shorebirds that summer in the southern hemisphere then return to their polar breeding grounds via the coasts of East Asia. Huge flocks loafing on the shores of Darwin belie their critically endangered status. As the tide washes in they deal with a series of threats by taking to the air as one, together creating breathtaking spectacles of synchronised flight over the Arafura Sea.
