20.01.2022 The weekend weeding and creek clean up
20.01.2022 FRIENDS UPDATE Hi All, It has been so long since we were able to see each other I hope I remember what you look like.... We are still unable to work on the creek as Council wants to ensure we are all safe from Covid. Once it is safe for us to return to the creek, the group has to submit a detailed plan of how we are going to keep us safe and well. I will let you know when this happens.
19.01.2022 Thank you to all the volunteers across South Barwon and Victoria this National Volunteer Week! Id like to call out four volunteer orgs that I have met with ove...r the last year, out of the many in my electorate. The Friends of Waurn Ponds Creek are a landcare group that has cleaned up and re-vegetated much of Waurn Ponds Creek, breathing new life into a once-degraded waterway. The volunteers at The Dress Up Place provide a valuable service in storing and providing costumes to many local theatre groups, and are struggling with COVID-19, along with much of that important cultural industry. The Torquay and District Landcare Group along with Jan Juc Coast Action do a lot of work re-vegetating and maintaining the beautiful scenic coastlines and waterways of the Surf Coast. Magnificent work. The Womens Sharing Shed Torquay is partnered with Torquay Community House to provide a valuable space for retired women to socialise and learn new skills. Thank you to all the volunteers at these great organisations, and thank you to the many other volunteers who contribute across my seat in so many other important groups for so many important causes. 18.01.2022 Solanum laciniatum or Kangaroo Apple, used by the Indigenous people for centuries as a medicine plant. It has anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties. The name kangaroo possibly comes from the shape of the leaves that look like kangaroo paws. There are a few of these bushes along the creek.
18.01.2022 UPDATE INFORMATION Hi All, I hope this email finds you safe and well. It certainly feels very different not being able to catch up with you all. I am waiting on Council to give us the go ahead for activities to begin on the creek. With the current outbreak I believe it will be sometime before this happens. ... National Tree Day has been cancelled - see email below. I hope we can all do something around our homes to help Green Geelong. I have had a conversation with Melissa Farrell regarding the duplication of Barwon Heads Road and she assures me that our concerns are addressed. Current information can be found at the following web address: https://roadprojects.vic.gov.au//barwon-heads-road-duplica Please take care and I look forward to catching up as soon as we can.
18.01.2022 Hi All, It is that time again!!!! I hope you all had a wonderful, safe break with family and friends? This Sunday (19th) will gather from 9.00 am on the creek at the plant site on the west bank of the creek, just north of the baseball park to do maintenance work. (See red dot on map below)... There are 3 options to access this site. 1. Park in baseball car park near Meadowvale Dr and follow the walking path towards Cobbin Farm. 2. From Pioneer Rd, enter the library car park and follow the road between the main baseball centre and the library. Park in the rear car park and walk down beside the house fences and turn left towards Cobbin Farm. 3. From Colac Rd, take the entrance to the library/Baseball centre before Leisure Link. Park in the first car park you see (this is the rear car park) and walk down beside the house fences and turn left towards Cobbin Farm. At approximately 10.30 we will stop for Morning Tea at the registration desk. Morning Tea will be provided by Friends. New helpers are most welcome: just turn up on the day. Please be sun smart with hats, etc. "Friends" will have water and sun screen available for all. Kind regards the Friends
18.01.2022 a bit of rain overnight and the creek flows. (under the bridge on Pioneer road)
18.01.2022 beautiful wattles out along the creek. This is a Black wattle (Acacia mearnsii) and a favourite amongst the birds. You can easily grow these trees in you own yard and you can purchase them from your local native nursery
18.01.2022 just a few photos of this morning clean up. First is what the group has called a bottle pond - it is a pool of water filled with bottles and a few balls. The second photo is an invasive succulent, most likely from peoples garden waste, that they throw along the creek, instead of in the green waste bin.
17.01.2022 a beautiful old She-oak along the creek on the east side between Cobbin Farm and Torquay road. What have you found along the creek on your walks or rides?
17.01.2022 photos from Leonie. She saw some ducks while walking along the creek near Cobbin Farm on the weekend.

16.01.2022 Rabbit infestation along the creek opposite Readings. The bank is full of warren holes. Rabbits were introduced to Australia in 1859 at Barwon Park, Winchelsea. It started with 24 rabbits. Now they are one of the worst invasive species in Australia, causing vegetation loss, erosion problems and many more.

12.01.2022 a few of the flowers you will see along the Creek at the moment. The gorgeous Mistletoes and the magnificent Reds. What flowers have you seen along the Creek?
12.01.2022 Been wondering why there are fences up along the creek near Waurn Ponds Shopping centre? I guess the council is taking advantage of people staying home
11.01.2022 This will be a great challenge to be a part of whilst you are out getting your exercise. Have a read and join up.
10.01.2022 Yesterday I went down to Waurn Ponds Creek to meet with an often overlooked group of dedicated volunteers- the Friends of Waurn Ponds Creek. This group is respo...nsible for cleaning up the length of the creek, and re-vegetating large sections of the parkland to either side. This provides habitat for birds and native animals, and beautiful shade and scenery for the community. I encourage locals to get involved with groups like this to keep their environment clean and healthy. Pictured in a prepared patch, ready for planting day. Ill be happy to join them to help out!
10.01.2022 Hi All, We meet again tomorrow- Sept 15, and will be gathering from 9.00 am on the creek to plant shrubs and grasses at our site behind Waurn Ponds Police and SES complex. 10.01.2022 went for a wander along the creek behind Bunnings. This is relatively new reveg site. The grasses and shrubs are growing well and look at the colour on the Correa.
09.01.2022 I guess we are out of lockdown. Over the past couple weeks, we have seen the creek get more and more litter around the shopping centre.
08.01.2022 We have had Nicole Hinz put this on the page. The rubbish is everywhere, from this bridge (pioneer road) to leisurelink. Very sad to see. I'll pick up what's on my path but would need tools for the things in the deeper grass. Is anyone out there I could join? If anyone would like to contact her feel free. As a group, we can not organise anything but as an individual, I am pretty sure you are allowed.
08.01.2022 Hi All, On Sunday, March 15, we will gather from 9.00 am on the creek at the plant sites near Brearly Reserve Bridge to do maintenance and clean up the creek surrounds. 08.01.2022 WPC meet ups will start up again once the health authority says it will be ok. Until then, you can post pictures or comments about the creek on here. If you are going for walk, take a plastic bag with you and pick up any rubbish you do see. Went along the creek yesterday and it was pretty clean so that was a blessing. Hope you are are well and happy.
06.01.2022 school holidays are not kind on the creek.
06.01.2022 The gorgeous Hedge wattle (Acacia paradoxa) is well and truly in flower along the creek. This tree is a great habitat tree for small birds and animals because of its fine thorns on its branches.
06.01.2022 Hi all. We have had an update from the council Happy National Tree Day which has been cancelled. Hope you can do something in your backyard to celebrate this day. Recently I have had phone meetings with council representatives and we are definitely not allowed to work on the creek surrounds until we are advised to do so. When this happens we will have to submit our plans on how we are going to keep everyone safe and these plans have to be approved by council. In the mean...time, Di is going to engage council contractors to plant the stock we have at GenU nursery, probably some time in September. So please stay safe and I look forward to catching up with you all when it is okay to do so.
05.01.2022 If anyone is missing weeding along the creek, join Bellarine Landcare

This will be held in the Wool Museum. Friends will be present on Saturday, March 28 and leaving a display for the remainder of the week. Cheers
03.01.2022 some photos of this morning weed pull. It is pretty cool when you find little treasures amongst the weeds like this tiny Dianella. With the competition gone, it should flourish
02.01.2022 Ready for clean up Australia
02.01.2022 Eventful morning this morning on the creek for Clean Up Australia Day. There was a total of 15 trolleys collected from a 2 kilometer stretch of creek.
