25.01.2022 The agenda for the next Council meeting (to be held on 22 September) includes a councillor proposal to change the existing walking/cycling path between the nort...hern side of Swan Bank Road (near the Maylands Golf Club) and the southern side of Swan Bank Road (near the Police complex), into a road. Whilst I understand that there are some traffic issues along Clarkson Rd that the residents living in that area have been dealing with for quite some time, I have significant concerns with the proposal: loss of many mature trees and vegetation; proximity of the proposed road to the lakes and wildlife habitat; destruction of one of our most beautiful & peaceful areas in Maylands which many walkers and cyclists enjoy; diverting traffic away from Tranby & Peninsula Roads into smaller streets; costs; and more. I'd love to hear your views on the proposal, to make sure that I am not missing something here. For more details, see page 428 of the agenda: https://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au//ordinary-council-meeting-

25.01.2022 Thanks again Mandy Brauer Kretzmer.

23.01.2022 Councillor Walk and Talk with Community As part of our Deputation on Tuesday night the City of Bayswater Councillors have been invited to walk and talk with the... community along the pathway that is the subject of motion 11.1, to be voted on Tuesday 22 September, 2020. Please join us on: Sunday 20th September anytime between 10:00am and 2:00pm We hope you will be able to attend and bring anyone else who you think may be interested. This is an opportunity for the community to show a sense of unity, where we work together to protect this unique and valuable area for everyone. We want this to be an enjoyable, relaxing and positive experience that inspires them to return. This is about the path/cycle way and not for raising other issues. Please remember to be courteous and respectful as they are giving their time to be there. Could you please comment or DM us if you are able to spend any time to talk with the Councillors. We need you.

21.01.2022 Today was a great success in showing the unity and togetherness within the Maylands community. Thank you to everyone who joined in the Walk and Talk and shared their love of this area with City of Bayswater Councillors, for supporting each other and coming together to strengthen our connections with one another. Even though the weather was not great we had many people join us throughout the day. We sincerely appreciate Councillors Sally Palmer and @Steph Gray for taking the time to hear the views, desires and concerns of the people. We thank you for your professionalism and neutrality as council members for simply listening to the local community and walking the cycle/pathway with us.

21.01.2022 Thankyou so much Mandy Brauer Kretzmer for this photo of a turtle on the Brickworks path.....last week.

Satterley developed the Peninsula Estate with dedicated wildlife trails, large open parks, picnic and playground areas, Gazebo's and lakes. The Satterley brochure clearly shows Swan Bank Road stopped at the golf course car park and resumed near the Police Academy. A...llocated between these two road reserves is a purpose built wildlife trail for the community. Before the estate was developed the track beyond Swan Bank Road was used as a way to get between the pits and the Brickworks.

15.01.2022 5.3 Motions of which previous notice has been given There appears to be a lot of confusion between moving and voting on a motion. Please see item 5.3 of the City of Bayswater, Standing Orders for an explanation.

15.01.2022 Some good news for the weekend! It has just been announced that the motion to investigate the construction of a new road near the Maylands Lakes (where the curr...ent walking/cycling path is) will not be 'moved' after all at the next Council meeting on Tuesday (see my previous posts for background). Well done to the hundreds of residents and community groups who took the time and effort to raise awareness of the proposal and voice their views and concerns.

11.01.2022 UPDATE 11.1 Cr Catherine Ehrhardt - Opening of Roadway - Swan Bank Road, Maylands Cr Ehrhardt did move her motion tonight, however, it was defeated as there was no seconder and the motion did not progress (lapsed).... We thank all the Councillors tonight for listening to the community, their patience and understanding the value this area is to everyone. Three petitions were presented by Cr Elli Petersen-Pik, City of Bayswater - Maylands and Mt Lawley. Cr Petersen-Pik listened to both sides and represented the Maylands community with utmost professionalism. We couldn't have done this without him. There was a significant turnout tonight, thank you to everyone who advocated and supported the protection of this area. Quite a number of people are unfortunately missing from this photo. Our community made the difference, we thank each and every one for being there tonight, last week, developed posters, instigated petitions, signed petitions, wrote emails, made phone calls, inspired others and walked the area on Sunday. We have supported each other, met our neighbours and built lasting friendships. Everyone played a part, great job

10.01.2022 Council has recently considered the results of the community consultation on the Ward Review, and on the basis of the city officers’ recommendation, decided to ...make no changes to the current system. I supported it at the meeting, but I also raised concern with regards to the current ratios between electors and councillors, which show that South Ward and West Ward are under-represented: For example, there are 500 more electors for each South Ward Councillor than for a North Ward Councillor. In addition, unlike the previous review, the discussion paper for this review did not include the ratios of councillors per ‘general population’, which includes people who are not officially electors (e.g. children, immigrants, people who are waiting to become citizens). I asked to receive that information, and as you can see, for example, in South Ward each Councillor represents 1180 people more than each North Ward Councillor. All those people are part of our community, use our services and facilities, and therefore, it is my view that they should be taken into account when we determine the ward structure. Those disparities will only become greater with time. As per our Play Space Strategy, Maylands is projected to experience 25% population growth by 2026, and we know that it’s happening as we speak. I think we will need to address this issue at some stage, definitely by the time that we undertake our next ward review.

10.01.2022 A stunning photo of the Brickworks, taken by local resident Trish Horton. Thanks Margaret Landre for organising with her.

04.01.2022 With me in the photo are some of our very dedicated locals who came to the Council’s Agenda Briefing Forum tonight to express their concerns and strong oppositi...on with regards to the recent councillor proposal to investigate changing the existing walking & cycling path between the northern and southern sides of Swan Bank Road (adjacent to the Maylands Lakes), into a road. Dozens of people attended the meeting tonight. 17 deputations were presented against the proposal, and three were presented for the proposal (You can listen/read them on the City's website). Since Friday, councillors have received unprecedented amount of emails (I counted over 60) from concerned residents, explaining their reasons why the proposal should be rejected. They included locals who live in different parts of Maylands/Bayswater, people who live around the Maylands Lakes area, visitors from other parts of Perth, and representatives of many of our local community groups such as Maylands Residents and Ratepayers Association, Friends Of Maylands Lakes, Friends of Maylands Brickworks, and Berringa Park Friends Group. The proposal will be discussed by Council next Tuesday, on 22 September, at 6.30pm.

04.01.2022 AGE FRIENDLY STRATEGY - submissions close Monday, 3 May 2021 The purpose of the Age Friendly Strategy is to provide a four year action plan that identifies key priorities and future initiatives that support and enhance the health and wellbeing of older people living, working or visiting the City of Bayswater. The survey is open to older people, carers, people with older family members, service providers and the wider community. Your input will make sure the strategy is relevant and meets the needs of our older residents.

01.01.2022 Our community stood together and won another battle last night. I’m relieved to report that the Councillor proposal to look into constructing a road adjacent to... the Maylands Lakes, where the cycling/walking path is, is now officially off the table. Despite what was previously said, at the meeting the motion was moved after all, but fortunately no other councillor agreed to second it, and it lapsed. Last night, I tabled three petitions organised by community members and signed by hundreds of people, against the motion. Two of those petitions called on the Council to rezone the cycling/walking path from a ‘road reserve’ into ‘Public Open Space’ (That path used to be once an unsealed road leading to the old tip that was located at the end of the Peninsula). The City confirmed that they will be looking at those petitions and consider whether a separate report on the issue will be submitted before Council for a decision in the coming months. It’s important to highlight that the road proposal, as it was worded, was not about looking into the traffic issues along Clarkson Road and considering options (It was only about investigating one option: construction of a new road). For those residents who live around Clarkson Road, I have offered to assist, with the help of the City officers and other Councillors, in finding ways to deal with any traffic issues. Several weeks ago, the City already started to collect data about the traffic volumes along the road, and soon we'll receive more information about it. Now, I hope that we can refocus on the very important issue that needs to be dealt with: the ongoing health issues of the Maylands Lakes. The City is planning to organise a community briefing and Q&A session in the coming weeks, where GHD will share information about the results of the 14-month detailed nutrient and hydraulic assessment that was undertaken for the lakes. I will provide more details about it when I receive them. The issue is planned to be discussed by Council at the meeting on 27 October.

01.01.2022 Councillor Walk and Talk with Community UPDATE due to the decision by Cr Ehrhardt to not move her motion on Tuesday we will still be down at the entrance to the cycle/walk pathway today Sunday, 20 September 2020 from 10am to 2pm in case you want to sign the hard copy petition. As a community we will still need to follow through on protecting this area from possible risk in the future. Thank you to everyone who said they will be coming along to the Counsellor Walk and Talk. ...We will still be there if you want to say hi as some people may not be aware of the outcome from last night. Regardless it will be a chance to come together, celebrate and meet your neighbours. Because of the decision by Cr Ehrhardt last night we are unsure if the Councillors will still attend. To protect this area from future risk the hard copy petition will progress to Council on Tuesday night along with the online petitions. The photo above explains why, this area was designed as a wildlife area when the Peninsula Estate was sold to the community, that is what it was intended to be and it is up to us to keep it that way.
