23.01.2022 Last night FOMMS held our 2nd rock pool ramble after dark - AND IT WAS EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST! we saw a Maori Octopus, decorator crab & elephant snail and a heap of other cool creatures!! Those are the only two after dark rock pool rambles we were hosting for this years Summer by the Sea, due to unfavorable tides and we weren't sure how they'd go - but considering how hugely successful they were, we'll definitely do them again :) Thanks to Emily Armstrong for the images.
23.01.2022 Do you remember the 2.4 metre female Pygmy Sperm Whale that washed up in Williamstown last month? Unfortunately, we have learned she died from ingesting rubbish.... This is especially sad as we also learned she was pregnant when she died. A necropsy conducted by Zoos Victoria showed she died from having her stomach impacted with plastic and kelp. This week we welcomed Humpback Whales into the bay on their annual migration up the east coast of Australia. There have also been reported sightings of Southern Right Whale outside the bay. This is a timely reminder to the community and visitors to not throw plastic and other rubbish into the bay and ocean waters as it harms marine wildlife through ingestion and entanglement. There are rules and regulations in place to protect both humans and marine mammals including recreational boats staying 200 metres away from a whale. Penalties up to $3000 can apply to people that dispose of food or waste in the water within the caution zone of a marine mammal. Any sightings of stranded or entangled whales should be reported to the whale and dolphin emergency hotline on 1300 136 017. Zoos Victoria Victorian Fisheries Authority Dolphin Research Institute
22.01.2022 Emergency Plastic Spill Clean Up Operation Tomorrow Morning at Shelly Beach From Kate McInnes: Hi All, Colleen who has been driving the collection of plastics from the Shelly Beach area has notified me of a massive spill / collection of 1,000s of nurdles https://upload.wikimedia.org//1920px-Nurdles_01_gentlemanr at Shelly Beach, Second Bay and Levy’s Beach, with the worst area being Shelly Beach.... The source is unknown but the EPA have been notified. Info about nurdles - https://www.nurdlehunt.org.uk/whats-the-problem.html Photos of nurdles are attached. If anyone is available to help clean up some of the plastic, there is a low tide tomorrow morning at 9am. Buckets, sieves and spades would probably be the best equipment for picking them up. Any help would be appreciated. Please pass onto your contacts or anyone who would be interested. 20.01.2022 HUGE NEWS! Woolworths Australia has today announced that all stores around the country will ban single use plastic bags by July 2018!! [UPDATE: 3 hours after th...is announcement, Australia's other giant supermarket Coles, also declared they would phase out free, thin plastic bags within 12 months!!!] Woolworths is one of Australia's largest supermarkets, this is a massive win for our oceans! This supermarket chain currently hands out over 3.2 billion single-use bags every year, shoppers will now have to bring their own bag or pay 15c for a thicker reusable bag. Well done to everyone who has supported the #banthebag campaign!! Now it's time for NSW, VICTORIA & WA to BAN THE BAG!! 08.01.2022 Don't listen to the fear-mongering media, these guys are everywhere, and are not a threat to those of us who enjoy spending time in the sea. Read more about them here.
07.01.2022 Litter belongs in the bin, not in our oceans and waterways. Some things never break down.
05.01.2022 A couple more images from our first ever after dark rock pool ramble last night, which was a huge success! We found a rock lobster, lots of shrimp, lots of shore and hermit crabs, plenty of snails, anemones, seastars, fish... The rocky shore really does come alive at night! We have another tonight but it's fully booked. The popularity of these events means that next years Summer by the Sea we will just have to put on more of them :) Photos courtesy of Christian van Rijn
