A small inconspicuous piece of paper rolls off our teleprinter with the address of community members who need our help. 19 years ago today, this small piece of paper marked one of the saddest days in history for NYFD. What unfolded was an event so tragic, we will forever find it hard to comprehend.... 343 Professional Firefighters 60 Police Officers 8 EMT/Paramedics And thousands of people never made it home to their families that night. 19.01.2022 This morning Holmesville's Tanker was called to assist Tarro FRNSW and Minmi FRNSW at a bush fire on the M1, upon arival there was a large are of bush and long grass alight. We used a wide range of firefighting techniques which also included the assistance of a helicopter water bomber. After a couple of hours the fire was fully extinguished and the area was rendered safe. #frnsw #preparedforanything

19.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what the big attachment on the back of road work trucks are for? They are called an Impact Attenuator and are designed take the impact of a vehicle if it were to run into the back of the road works truck. Tonight at approx.19:30 FRNSW Holmesville 498 along with multiple RFS units were called to a two vehicle MVA on the M1, just before the Cardiff exit. ... On arrival we found a Ford Ute had collided at approximately 100 km/h with the back of a road works truck. Luckily the Impact Attenuator had been deployed and took all of the impact - unfortunately the Ford ute didn't fair so well. #preparedforanything #impactattenuator #themoreyouknow

18.01.2022 T498 have just returned from Strike Team Delta after 5 days down South. We had a mixed crew in our truck consisting of two members from Holmesville 498, one from Stockton 446 and one from Minmi 377. Multiple trucks attended alongside us including Wyong Kearsley, Kurri Kurri and Tingara Heights. What legends! We were tasked to Wyndham, West of Bega to help protect homes and the town centre. We had extremely hot, dry conditions and were surrounded by 4 huge fires burning rapidly. Thankfully the town was kept safe unfortunately we could not protect all the homes on the out skirts of town. Conditions were just too intense. At the end of a long 5 days away we have all returned safe. Thanks to our brothers at attending stations for all of your great support.

18.01.2022 Did you see the smoke in the Cameron Park/Edgeworth area today? No it wasn't a wild bushfire, it was a very well planned hazard reduction. A hazard reduction is a carefully planned burn used to reduce the risk of bushfires. Hazard reductions are carried out during the cooler months in preparation for the coming fire season. ... Fallen trees, leaf litter and low level shrubs are referred to as fuel, and by removing this fuel we can reduce the impact bushfires have. Todays hazard reduction was organised by the NSW Rural Fire Service, crews from Fire + Rescue 498 Holmesville and Fire + Rescue 251 Cardiff assisted on the northern side of Cameron Park between the Newcastle link road and the residential area. It was very successful, with the weather conditions working in our favour the fire moved in the direction we planned and the smoke had minimal impact on the residents, thanks to the wind. Thank you to NSW Rural Fire Service for inviting the crew from 498. We have been advised by Cameron Park Rural Fire Brigade that their tankers will patrol throughout the night and have asked that no one enter any of the tracks or trails in and around the burnt area, with a high risk of injury. There will be more hazard reductions in and around our area over the coming months with NSW RFS conducting a 38 hectare burn on Rhonda Road at Wakefield on Sunday 30th and Monday 31st, while NSW firefighters will be at St Joseph's south of Toronto from Sunday. Additional hazard reductions are planned at Floralia Close at Blackbutt, Noamunga Reserve at Boat Harbour, Narara Road south of Cooranbong, the M1 Pacific Motorway and George Booth Drive at Seahampton next Tuesday. 16.01.2022 Our thoughts are with Coulson Aviation and the NSW Rural Fire Service with the sad loss of the 3 American crew and their C130 Large Air Tanker in the NSW Snowy Monaro region. The whole emergency services community is deeply saddened by this devastating incident.

07.01.2022 Tonight at approx 19:00, Tanker 498 along with 7 other Fire Rescue NSW appliances were assigned to a second alarm structure fire at the Wetlands, Shortland. On arrival we were met with a fully involved agricultural shed which contained tractors, paints, landscaping equipment and other flammable items. Adding some challenges to extinguishing this fire. After approximately one and a half hours we were able to extinguish and render the scene safe.... Two crews remained to monitor and extinguish any forms of re-ignition. #frnsw #preparedforanything

06.01.2022 Yesterday (December 27th) Holmesville's tanker was assigned to strike team X-Ray as part of a joint operation with the New South Wales Rural Fire Service and New South Wales National Parks And Wildlife Service. We were deployed to the Milbrodale Valley to take part in one of the largest back burning tasks we have ever been apart of. We were exceptionally lucky with the weather and as a result we were able to put in a back burn of almost 20km in length. This operation has assisted in containing the northern point of this fire which has already burnt through over 500,000 hectares. #frnswmedia #preparedforanything

02.01.2022 HAZARD REDUCTION BURN ON CAMERON PARK SIDE OF THE NEWCASTLE LINK ROAD SATURDAY 29TH AUGUST #FRNSW Firefighters, along with crews from the NSW Rural Fire Service will supervise the burn of 27 hectares of bushland. Adjacent to the west bound lanes of the Newcastle Link Rd between Minmi Rd, Cameron Park Drive and residential streets Seacrest Drive, Ayres Way, Craigevar Way, Hooghly Ave, Araminta Chase and Beluga Dr. ... Commencing at approximately 9:00am and to be completed by approximately 7:00pm. Patrol and further blackening out work is likely to continue on Sunday. Residents should only call Triple Zero (000) if they see an UNATTENDED fire. For safety reasons, walking tracks and fire trails located within and around the burn area will be closed to the public while the burn is being conducted.
