13.01.2022 Today, we all grieve with the families, friends and colleagues of NSW Rural Fire Service firefighters Geoffrey Keaton and Andrew O’Dwyer, who were tragically ki...lled last night. It has been devastating to hear of this loss of life and my deepest condolences go out to all those affected. As a mark of mourning and respect, flags will be flown at half-mast today from all Fire and Rescue NSW buildings. I also want to extend my deep gratitude to all the crews battling to minimise the fires across the State. Your commitment to the community far exceeds expectations. Thank you. 08.01.2022 **A message from our Commissioner, Paul Baxter** In between Christmas lunch and dinners, our crews were hard at work yesterday and continue to be today. To all ...of our Firefighters, thank you for your commitment. Your dedication. Your professionalism. Your selflessness. Your service to the community. You have undoubtedly exceeded all expectations. Last week, we had a near miss when a motorist hit one of our Firefighters on the incident ground. I want to remind members of the community that when you are on the road and see emergency vehicle lights flashing, please slow down and give our crews space. It’s safer for you and safer for our crews. Please also: - Familiarise yourself with alert levels. - Have a fire escape plan for your home. - When in place, abide by total fire bans. 03.01.2022 Come with us for a crawling stumble through a fire- ‘cause let’s face it, it’s not like the movies. It’s so hot you can’t stand, the smoke and the steam obscure... you vision. Your hose line gets held up on a multitude of unidentifiable items and your partner is scanning with a thermal imaging camera behind you as you work your way forward. We’re looking for the seat of the fire, and we’re doing search and rescue at the same time; and sending a conditions report to the Incident Controller because all the pieces of information from every crew give them a greater understanding of the fire behaviour we are seeing. If you are in there, we are looking for you. If it’s your home or business, we’re trying to save it. Help us out. Put in some smoke detectors, keep looking when cooking, don’t put anything closer than a meter to the heater and make an evacuation plan- please, make sure this winter you know the risks. #PreparedForAnything #ProtectTheIrreplaceable #firesafety #winterfiresafety #firefighter #firetruck #frnsw #turningout
