23.01.2022 We have seen the completion of another 2 Fire and Rescue NSW On-call Recruit Firefighter training programs over the last 2 weeks. On-call firefighters staff the majority of FRNSW stations, primarily in regional centres across the state. On-call Recruits receive their basic training over 2 phases. Once complete, they respond 24/7 from their homes and primary employment to serve their communities. In late August, Retained Recruit Program #26 completed Phase 1 of their training..., an initial 8-day program held at the Academy in Western Sydney. This includes operational safety, breathing apparatus, hazardous materials, structure fires 1 and firefighting skills. Last weekend, our Armidale campus (located in northern NSW) hosted Phase 2, which included structure fires 2, basic life support and gas detection. Thanks to our amazing Instructors, campus operations officers and other support staff for their ongoing hard work and commitment. Congratulations to all students from both classes - we hope you have a great career. Welcome and stay safe! 20.01.2022 Nine new recruits from across the state commenced their Retained Recruit Program at the Armidale Emergency Services Academy Campus today. The recruits were welcomed by Regional North Area Commander Gary McKinnon before commencing the first phase of their training program, which will run until Sunday. The recruits will cover a wide range of subjects during the course. They will then return to their local stations where they can respond to incidents and continue to learn "on t...he job", practicing their new skills and knowledge. In early september they will return to Armidale to finish their face-to-face training. The Armidale Academy Campus is located in the north of NSW and is part of a network of Regional Academy campus sites. These centres are key components of the training delivered to FRNSW firefighters, collectively training hundreds of regional firefighters each year. 20.01.2022 Assistant Commissioners Rob McNeill and Paul McGuiggan had lunch with the newest Fire and Rescue NSW On Call Recruits on Sunday 16 August. The recruits from across NSW, finished their basic training today. Assistant Commissioners Mc Neill and McGuiggan took the opportunity to congratulate the class and have a chat with them all while they took a break from Basic Life Support training. The class of On Call Recruits told the Assistant Commissioners that they were very impresse...d with the quality of training and facilities at Emergency Services Academy. We wish them all the very best in their new careers!! 18.01.2022 We have been a bit quiet on social media for a couple of weeks, but have been preparing for a visit today by The Premier of NSW. A great day!!
17.01.2022 We prepare our firefighters for anything. This is one example of the unusual incidents they can expect to attend.
16.01.2022 The name for the Academy Tower is now official! The streetscape around the Academy’s practical learning environment continues to develop, all designed to duplicate what fire crews would find in a normal urban environment. The centrepiece of the PLE is the tower, a 5-storey state-of-the-art structure. The tower is now officially been given with the name Jirrabity Tower. But why Jirrabity? How did we come up with the name?... The Academy Operations Team came up with the idea of using an Indigenous name and contacted the Diversity and Inclusion unit, who endorsed the concept. A small network of Indigenous firefighters were contacted and set about researching and nominating names. Former Instructor Leading Firefighter Shane Kennedy was part of that group I remembered that a brown snake had been seen in front of the ESA before opening day in 2018, so I researched the traditional dialect and found that the local Dharug word for snake is jirrabity. The name was then referred to the Academy Steering Committee and was widely endorsed. Qualified Firefighter Jasmine Sarin, a successful Indigenous artist, was approached to design the artwork that would adorn the tower. Firefighter Sarin had previously designed the motifs that adorn the City of Sydney Runner, and within days the artwork was finalised. Academy Operations has now affixed the name and the artwork to the walls and doors of the tower, where it can be seen from a distance. The ESA is proud to have the name Jirrabity associated with the practical learning environment developed, designed and implemented through our diversity network!

13.01.2022 Come behind the scenes and learn what it takes to be Prepared for Anything as our first recruit class of the year is put through their paces at the Fire and Rescue NSW Emergency Services Academy. This week Recruit Firefighter Lauren Fuller tells us about what recruits learn in the first week of training. The highlight? Learning to bowl and roll hose.
12.01.2022 Welcome to our new Recruits here at the Academy! Watch as they share with us what they are looking forward to learning during their training.
12.01.2022 Anyone who attended a graduation ceremony at our old college in Alexandria will probably have noticed the man with the big moustache playing percussion with the band. Over many years (decades, in fact) Vince gave up his time, even after he passed the grand age of 90. Rest In Peace Vince, thank you for playing a big role on the biggest day in the life of many Recruit Firefighters.
11.01.2022 Our Appliance Training Unit is one of our technical training teams who deliver a range of services to FRNSW firefighters. ATU are currently busy training the 2 classes of Recruit Firefighters in driving and operating pumps. They also provide "crossover" training when stations are receiving brand new fire trucks. ATU spent last week completing a "train the trainer" course in preparation for training firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 027 Parramatta who are about to receive a brand new Ladder Platform - which will be delivered after all the specialist drivers are trained in the next couple of weeks. The LP reaches a height of 45m, or around 15 stories. This new truck will be the tallest in our fleet, 1m higher than the truck in service at Fire and Rescue NSW Station 001 City of Sydney.
10.01.2022 The first thing you see when you walk into our Academy is the historic fire truck. This isn't any old fire truck, it is a piece of history. The final response appliance for a number of firefighters decades ago. Read on. https://www.museumoffire.net/si/the-academy-s-brave-garford
06.01.2022 Night drill at the ESA!
05.01.2022 It's National Rugby League Grand Final Day 2020! Penrith Panthers vs Melbourne Storm ... The Academy is located within the Penrith Local Government Area, so we are officially backing the mighty Panthers to win their third premiership tonight! In a nice gesture, the 2020 NRL winner's ring features a salute to all first responders who have worked hard throughout the whole year. We are hoping that our colleagues from the Victorian Emergency Management Training Centre in Melbourne aren't too disappointed at the Storm being runners-up this season.
04.01.2022 This week 24 students started a month-long course in urban search and rescue here at the Academy, the first USAR course to he held since we moved to our new home! Upon completion of the training, the students will become members of the FRNSW domestic and international humanitarian response capability. The group started the course with some simple team building skills and will soon start learning new skills and knowledge in shoring, technical search, rope rescue, concrete and metal cutting. The course will culminate in a 3-day field simulation exercise. We welcome the class to the Academy and wish them all the best during their training. More pics to come!
04.01.2022 Congratulations to the 2020 Oncall-to-Permanent Firefighter class, who completed their intensive program at the Fire and Rescue NSW Academy today. These firefighters were previously retained firefighters who were on call 24/7 to respond to assist their local communities. After their short bridging course, they will now start full time employment at fire stations across Sydney. Congratulations to all class members, and thank you to their families and friends who have sup...ported them in their journey. Well done Instructors and academy staff! Stay safe Class 4/2020.
