25.01.2022 Frantic Friday...truck day! Need another roll of tape to secure consignment stickers of the pallet of fruit. Fling the cupboard door open...reach in for a new roll...then spot the heart starter. Brown tree snake has moved in to do a skin change and have a camp. Saturday morning lift the plastic rain cover on the old blade and get another heart starter with 10 foot amethistine python coiled up at chest level. . Sometimes we feel sorry for our friends in Hawaii and New Zealand who miss out on these instinctive and unexpected adrenaline rushes. But MOST of the time, really, we could do without these "thrills". #browntreesnake #amethistinepython #wettropicswildlife #fruitforestfarm #farmlife

23.01.2022 With the footy finals done and dusted, on farm signs of summer are emerging. Baby breadfruits are fascinating the way they suddenly push out and grow soon after the pendulous male flowers appear. 21.01.2022 Finally...we have had useful rain...after the longest dry spell most of us can remember. Thankfully an equipment purchase earlier in the year has helped save the day. Following advice (and example set) by @grovesgrowntropicalfruit we ordered a Teagle Tomahawk. Aussie (Mareeba) built bale choppers were too big for our high density trellis plantings. And we wanted a machine which required less horsepower to drive. The Tomahawk 4040 was the perfect fit for our Kubota L5740 (abou...t 60 hp). We cut and baled our own fallow paddocks...and found "win win" solutions where neighbours were happy for us to slash their blocks and bale the mulch into the 4 ft bales fitting the chopper. There were a few minor teething problems. But without doubt the new bale chopper has been a resounding success. Conserving precious moisture for trees filling fruit and improving soils structure, keeping the soil cool and feeding soil biology. We have pitch forked mulch out in the past but is not sustainable or cost effective on any reasonable scale. #balechopper #tomahawk4040 #teaglemachinery #regenerativeagriculture #australianagriculture #conservingwater #soilhealth #soilbiology #soilmatters #healthysoil #innovativefarming
20.01.2022 Whether you call it Sugar Apple, Sweetsop or Custard Apple, makes no difference. Its hard to find a sweet treat better or healthier than this fruit...and custard never tasted this good. The old time strains of this fruit (annona squamosa) had a lot of seeds, but the new strains of green and purple sugar apple are so luscious anyone counting seeds doesnt have a sweet tooth. ... Picked hard green (or purple) when the "scales" spread, the fruit travels well and is ready to eat when it softens. This is a fruit which gives mass produced confectionary a run for its money for those who enjoy a sweet treat...and its healthy fresh fruit. #sugarapple #custardapple #sweetsop #yum #healthytreat #putaspooninit

19.01.2022 Awesome work Tibby!
18.01.2022 A bit late...but our 2020 rambutan season has begun. A long dry summer doesnt seem to have worried the crop, with the best quality weve seen in years. We grow mostly "Classic Red" varieties, however the "Gold" rambutan is a favourite for many having the best flesh recovery and great flavour.... In addition to tasting delicious, this sweet and juicy exotic fruit is rich in vitamin C. 100g provides two thirds of the recommend daily intake. Although its extra work and cost, packing in punnets maintains the fruit quality for much longer. Find our fruit @thaihoa_grocer in Inala Plaza and Suncoast Fresh who are currently doing home delivered fruit and vege boxes in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and surrounds. LaManna Premier Group are our Melbourne stockists and our Sydney suppliers are primarily in Cabramatta, Sydney, (we supply Fresh Produce Merchant wholesale) and GT Produce in Adelaide. #rambutan #premium #exoticfruit #vitaminC #eathealthy #keepwell

18.01.2022 Alison makes the BEST breadfruit chips and curries. But this boiled breadfruit and snake bean salad with a heaped spoon of Donnys @libangourmet Garlic Love stirred through is certainly a match made in heaven. Traditionally breadfruit is cooked with coconut milk or cream, however its such a versatile (and healthy) fruit, anythings possible in the kitchen. ... Donny is a keen Brisbane foodie who recently discovered breadfruit during a visit to our farm. We have heard his Beetroot Hommus is great with breadfruit chips also. Breadfruit can be difficult to market to new customers because when it looks its best, it hasnt quite reached full flavour. As breadfruit ripen on the tree sweet (honey bees love it) sap starts to seep out of the skin. Eventually they will go soft and ripen on the tree, so for best flavour (and yellowish flesh) we need to harvest as close to this stage as we can. The fruit which was at the core of the Mutiny on the Bounty seems to still be able to create a stir (fry)? @suncoast_fresh @thaihoa_grocer @lamannapremiergroup #breadfruit #ulu #uto #fruitdisguisedasveg #potatosubstitute #lowgi #highfibre #tropicalfruit #tasteexplorelearn #artocarpusaltilis #roast #bake #fry #boil #versitilefruit
17.01.2022 Do you think Big Mama looks a bit miffed about being netted out of one of her favourite fruit blocks? Standing around 6 feet tall she is easily the biggest of our diverse native wildlife...and though omnivorous, eats mostly fruits. She generally rules the roost so to speak. Female cassowaries mate with multiple males, lay eggs in a very simple nest on the ground. Then leave the male to solely sit on the eggs and raise the chicks resulting. 15.01.2022 Teagle Tomahawk 4040 in action. Order placed from @teaglemachinery Cornwall England, shipped to Melbourne and delivered to @farmtechmachinery. We collected it from the truck depot in Townsville on 30 September. Mulched most of the fruit tree orchards by the end of November. Just in time for the dry spell. Its easily adjustable, accurate and versatile. A huge asset to our farm! #regenerativeagriculture #soilhealth #microbes #waterconservation #humus #organicinputs #wettropicssoilcare
15.01.2022 Although most of us on farm rate durian as the favourite fruit of the big range we grow, the favourite for farm tour guests is usually abiu...closely followed by rollinia. Abiu is a fairly unique soft sweet tropical fruit in that it has a long shelf life at room temperature if undamaged. The "benchmark" variety we grow is Z4. Selected many years ago by Joe, Ivy and Alan Zappala for its good flavour, good fruiting ability, including a winter crop, and having normally 1 and w...ith bigger fruits 2 seeds only. Brunello and E4 are also good abiu selections of this fruit which originates in the tropical Americas. Ripe when yellow skinned this is a great cut and spoon snack fruit in season now. @lamannapremiergroup @suncoast_fresh #abiu #cremecaramelfruit #crowdfavourite #yum #dessert #putaspooninit
14.01.2022 For some people, being in lock down with durians would be a nightmare! For we "converts", it couldnt be any better. Its crossover time here with our durian varieties at the moment. Early varieties are winding down and mid/late season ones are starting.... With so much choice on farm at one time, some of us become durian snobs. The reality of durian is similar to coffee...once hooked, most is good when in need...just some better than the norm. Durian flavours reminiscent of coffee, white chocolate, burnt caramel etc are most accurately described by Lindsay Gasik @durianwriter. This array of durians are all grown on Open Tatura trellis which means no broken branches and we will still have an orchard after a cyclone having proven the system through the eye of Cat 5 Cyclone Yasi. The varieties (as we know them) are from top Gob, Ganyeo, Gumpun, P88, Red Prawn and Kradum Tong. We are finding some are ready to eat when they drop, and others need a couple of days to ripen before they enter the cool chain for transport. We use Lindsay Transport for road freight and their mixed fruit trucks run at 11degrees C from our area. #durianlovers #durian Trexo Fruit Station @thaihoa_grocer #exoticfruitfarm #tasteexplorelearn #tasteqld

13.01.2022 Sugar Apple and soursop have graced back yards in North Queensland since the late 1800s. Rollinia was brought to our region during the 1970s when fruit hunters began actively searching for and collecting new edible plants...and particularly tropical fruits. For many years we had desired to see, grow or taste the enigmatic Ilama (annona diversifolia), having read glowing reports about this member of the family which favoured lowland tropical conditions. We were extremely happ...y to get some Ilama trees from Cairns fruit Guru's Mike Trenerry and Mike Prociv. And even happier to see the first of the purple flowers turn into baby fruits. We believe we have seedlings from Red Genova and pink Rosendo Perez varieties. The skin is quite thick and apparently it's normal for it to split at maturity. The flavour lives up to the incredible colour of the flesh. Some say the taste is like strawberry/raspberry white chocolate, others reckon like the pink part of Neopolitan icecream. Certainly an amazingly luscious, colourful member of the annona tribe and well worth trying if you get the opportunity! #annona #ilamaannona #annonadiversifolia #sugarapple #exoticfruitfarm #exoticfruit #tropicalfruithunters #fnqgrown #tasteexplorelearn #tasteparadise @fnqrarefruitaustralia

13.01.2022 We haven't run a marathon to win this one - but we have impressed a cohort of Australia's top chefs to win a gold medal for our seasonal tropical fruit in this year's @deliciousaus produce awards. 11.01.2022 With the wet season over the time to cut and bale mulch hay has come! Last year we used a rotary slasher which was slow and used a lot of diesel due to "overcutting" the grass etc. For this season we scored a used Reese UFO 2070 disc mower. Amazing New Zealand design and build. An efficient robust machine which cuts anything and is all belt drive....No gearboxes.... The Case baler has done the job again and we now have some big stockpiles of mulch hay ready to spread as our various tree crops flower and set fruit. We spread the mulch after trees have moisture stressed enough to encourage flowering and as the hot summer fruit fill stage begins. Although this year is forecast to be a La Nina cycle...which means plenty of rain (and 4 cyclones) predicted. We will still mulch as last year for soil improvement and weed control benefits.
11.01.2022 Keledangs are ripening...yooohooo! This colourful relative of jackfruit and breadfruit is easy to eat and tastes great with a good balance of sweet and tang leaving a luscious aftertaste on the palate. Can grow into a big tree like this ones Borneo jungle parents...but also works well for us as a low, accessible tree on Open Tatura trellis.... Another plus of this member of the Artocarpus tribe is it changes skin colour to orange as it ripens. Perfect signal for growers and fruit lovers.

10.01.2022 Granadilla and ice cream was THE favourite dessert for North Queenslanders when Peter and Alison were kids. Almost every backyard had a "granadilla stand", normally made from 3/4 galvanised water pipe or old railway line. They were made so you could easily walk underneath to pollinate the flowers and allowed the heavy fruits to hang through for easy bagging (everything likes them) and picking. . People used to pollinate them with finger or feather (if it was close to the ch...ook pen). . The fruit develops an amazing sweet fruity smell as it ripens. Preparation is simply cut the fruit in half, being careful to catch the juice and seeds from inside. . Skin the halves and add the diced flesh to the seed/juice mix. . A sprinkle of sugar to taste over the mix draws the juice and flavour out ready to rest in the fridge to await its ice cream partnership. . The granadilla (passiflora quadrangularis) is the biggest of the passion fruit mob, and grows easily in warmer climes. Most likely named for its very square stems, it is very ornamental with big bold leaves and flowers and "Jurassic" style fruits. Definitely deserves a backyard spot, and commercial production given modern packaging and transport options. . #growyourown #granadilla #passiflora #passifloraquadrangularis #vanillaicecream #exoticdessert #fruitforestfarm #tasteexplorelearn #exploretnq #tasteparadise See more
10.01.2022 We only grow a couple of savoury fruits. Dabai gets plenty of attention and comment from fruit lovers visiting Borneo, and some selections are said to be better than others. With an amazing gardenia sweet scent when flowering its certainly a standout in our orchard when flowering. Male and female flower on separate trees. We also grow Safu which comes from Africa. Safu is amazingly easy to grow here and fruits early and easily as a single tree. They handle dry hard conit...ions easily and are relatively pest free. Both Dabai and Safu just require dunking in hot (salted) water to be ready to eat. Weve heard dabai fruits contain a resin which protects the fruit from being eaten by animals and birds. Heat dissipates the resin. Our Dabai have a savoury black olive taste. Safu have a savoury avocado/lime taste and probably deserve to be planted more widely. #dabai #safu #exoticfruit #savouryfruit #cookeddabai #delicious #notyouraveragefruit #yum #tropicalfruit #borneofruit #africanfruit #tasteexplorelearn #fruitforestfarm
09.01.2022 Following very dry summers over the past couple of seasons, we decided to invest in a 150,000 litre water storage tank to support our irrigation system. Our area has no big rivers or creeks, so we rely on a 6000 litre per hour bore as backup to seasonal gravity feed spring water. . We decided on a Pioneer tank and found the service exceptional. Our job was to prepare the site with levelled sand. Amazingly, Jeremy from Dobbs Plumbing in Cairns brought the tank kit down in ...a box trailer and easily assembled it in one day. . With the tank now full of cool clear mountain water, we are optimistic it will improve our farm water security and efficiency. Has level gauge ladder and manhole and sacrificial annodes to back the 20 year warranty (the annodes must be replaced every 10 years). Thanks Pioneer! #pioneertank #sustainablefarming #watersecurity
09.01.2022 On warm summer nights Peter dons his trusty makeup brush and headtorch. Drags himself away from festive season TV reruns. And heads into the durian orchard. Some varieties will self pollinate. However most benefit with far better fruitset and shape achieved with a little pollen exchange with the makeup brush, which closely replicates the pollen holding ability of our native blossom bats. There are insect pollinators also...but some varieties are fairly distant from each other.... Trellised trees make pollinating and thinning very easy as everything can be reached from the ground. If there is a negative stemming from hand pollinating...its too many perfect shaped fruits setting. Most have to be thinned to leave the tree enough reserves to fill very nutrient dense fruits...and back it up again next year. The worst job on farm is thinning baby durians! Our goal is to produce quality fruit like these. 07.01.2022 Soursop is an important "offering" fruit for some people celebrating Chinese New Year. We were picking on Friday with the preferred leaf sprig...and this beauty had already "sprung" ripe. So great for us as tree ripened soursop tastes brilliant, but is no good to transport. Reputed to have plenty of health benefits soursop tastes brilliant as is, as a drink, in a cheesecake or our favourite, the puree poured over vanilla icecream. Cassowaries, spectacled flying foxes an...d fruit piercing moths love ripe soursop at early stages of ripeness. Fortunately we harvest at full mature hard green stage. Big Mama Cassowary stands about 6ft and is in her prime. Good orchard management means keeping ripe fruit out of the paddock so native wildlife stick to their normal tucker.
05.01.2022 The Cairns Botanic Gardens have a special Christmas Plant Sale event today from 8am - 12pm. From the creme caramel fruit, Abiu, to the guacamole fruit, Safu, Trina will have a stall full of tree fruits to tantalise all taste buds Other stalls will have succulents, broms, gingers, bamboo, aroids, hoyas and more!
04.01.2022 As our jackfruit season winds up, its been an interesting one on reflection. Some promising new varieties to complement our great proven ones. Weve seen some amazing wildlife activity in the jackfruit orchard.... And a green (blue) treesnake searches out a green tree frog in its normally safe hollow in a jackfruit tree. It wasnt the frogs lucky day and the snake flashed up into the jackfruit canopy with its leggy prize. And love is often in the air, however when its fruit spotting bugs into it, problems follow for orchardists. Even at ground level fresh fruit production benefits from diverse biology, and really none better than soil life. A great sign of healthy soil is multiple fungi species emerging from the mulch in the rootzone undertree. There are plenty of challenges for fruitgrowers out there, but also plenty of incidental rewards in producing good fresh food for locals and people in distant markets alike.
