08.01.2022 Campaign In 2014 Lucy Haslam and her terminally ill 24 year old son Dan, began to campaign for the reintroduction of medicinal cannabis into Australia. Dan had... been using cannabis very successfully, albeit reluctantly to treat his chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting. Chemo made him so sick that he had to be hospitalised every two weeks when he had chemo. Nothing the doctors had given him worked to stop the vomiting.desperation drove them to try cannabis and to their delight and surprised it worked incredibly well..but then Dan was a criminal for using it and his mum Lucy was a criminal for buying it for him. They went public with Dans Story which quickly became the story of thousands of sick Australians who use cannabis medically for a vast number of debilitating conditions including cancer, intractable epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease, & MS just to name a few. The groundswell of support was enormous. Sadly Dan passed away from his bowel cancer in February 2015 aged just 25 but the political will, it seemed was behind him and on the first anniversary of Dan’s death, the Australian law changed to legalise cannabis for medical use. It was introduced into the Parliament as Dan’s Law to honour the bravery of Dan who fought so hard so others could benefit as he did. Lucy was at that time so proud of what she and Dan had achieved. Today however.it is a different story. Today, Dan’s mum Lucy, a NSW grandmother and former nurse has been up to her eyes organising the 2019 UIC Medicinal Cannabis Symposium (and let that sink in - grandmother and former nurse) she's also been busy challenging the Government and Opposition over terrible access to cannabis and cannabis products by Australian patients. She is no longer proud of Dan’s legacy which has been clearly set up to fail by both State and Federal Governments. Calling on politicians to #FixDansLaw she's UNdeclared the victory of a 270,000-strong petition she started with her late son Dan to get the law changed in respect of medicinal cannabis. Although this did in fact happen in February 2016 (with the passage of 'Dan's Law) Lucy says while she was once proud of what they thought they'd achieved she's now 'angry and bitterly disappointed' at the result. Help her bring about the further change needed to make cannabis and products genuinely available to sick Australians.
