If you are doing exercise or physical activity where you are out of breath or puffing, such as jogging or running, you do not need to wear a face covering. Karate students (older than 12 years) must arrive and leave the dojo wearing a face mask. 2. Students dont have to (but may choose to) wear a face mask while exercising. 3. Parents of karate students please note: pick up and drop off only. Parents need to wait in cars. Parents may enter reception area wearing a face mask for admin purposes only and must then leave the building.

20.01.2022 Following announcements made this morning, we will be opening Funakoshi Karate International Australia Hombu Dojo, Warrnambool on Monday 22 June. We will need to adhere to certain restrictions (student numbers, sanitising, maintaining daily visitor records, etc) and as these become more clearly defined through our industry associations (Karate Victoria, Australian Federation and Fitness Australia) more details will be posted. Within the framework of these yet to be defined ...restrictions, we anticipate being able to offer INDOOR karate classes. We are fortunate that we have two separate floor spaces (one of which is large enough to subdivide into two) and this potentially gives us great flexibility. As we work through the finer details, Sensei Josh and I will formulate a timetable of class options and open these up for bookings. FKIA

16.01.2022 2020 FKIA Black Belt Grading update: I addressed the potential what ifs in my original post when restrictions were first lifted... The 2020 black belt gradings are (re)scheduled for 30 August at our annual gasshuku. ... The gasshuku will now NOT take place this year, but sometime in 2021 (date depending on post Covid restrictions). I have resolved to give students who have worked hard the opportunity of completing what they started. Those that were originally scheduled to grade in late March 2020 have three options: 1. Dojo grading at 5:30pm this Wednesday, 5 August. 2. Online zoom grading on Sunday 30 August. 3. Postpone grading till 2021 at annual gasshuku - date to be advised. Options one and two above will have their practice grading results (conducted back in March this year) count 50% towards their final result. Option three will be a new test as it will be too far removed from the practice grading four months ago. Each student MUST please let me know (text on 437226615, or inbox on Facebook) within 24 hours which option (one, two or three) they wish to attempt. If I dont have a reply from a student I will assume option three applies. Osu F Note: - For option one and two an extended stamina test will replace kumite. Kumite from the practice grading will be used to assess sparring skills. - The current dojo restrictions regarding numbers, distancing and no contact between seniors still applies. - No spectators permitted. Only examiners and students attempting the grading will be in attendance.

15.01.2022 The entry fee for this event has been reduced to $10 to enter either or both Kata & virtual kumite.

02.01.2022 A Black Belt I used to think everyone could be a black belt. The way was simple; All they had to do was train every day for 3 5 yrs, Attend 2 or 3 lessons ...a week, Pay attention to instruction, And they would make the grade. Over the years I realised that was not true. Many wont make it as long as they have a hole in their backside. Some are just scared of the responsibility of being good, Some are scared of their spouses and family, Who dont want a stronger version of them. Some are just so weak willed they dont have it in them. Most people blame the Instructor, Or family or work commitments, Or their relationship with other students, Or that the boss (their spouse) wont let them. Or nagging injury or illness, Not realising that overcoming these problems is what makes a black belt. Some give up when they get a black belt. Not realising that is also a test. Black belt means beginner, It only means that youve found the ladder to climb. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory describes them well. A black belt is an investment in a person. It is only a belt and a piece of paper Wearing it is another thing. Many martial artists dont realise they failed at that point. Taking responsibility for themselves, Their own training, Their own standards, Their own progress, Never blaming others for a setback, Being strong enough to help others, THATs a black belt.
