24.01.2022 To put the hand down or not? It seems there is debate among ski coaches and instructors on whether putting the inside hand down on the snow in a carved turn is an error in technique or not. Some questions I consider in regards to this. What will be different if I didn’t allow my hand to touch the snow? Is it effecting the performance of a carving ski? How much pressure is on the inside hand on the snow?... At what point in the turn is it touching the snow? What benefits are there to having my hand on the snow as long as it’s not effecting my skis carving? What detrimental effects could come from using my inside hand? Is my belief about what the hand should be doing based on someone else’s opinion or my own? Do other sports use the inside hand as a point of support? Like @aryfonta90 in the picture. So again to have the inside hand touch the snow or not? Big question......or perhaps not a big question? For me I like the feeling

24.01.2022 I really appreciate the folks that give me feedback on bigpictureskiing content. Here is one from Manchester, UK. Applying what’s he’s learnt from several of the videos.

22.01.2022 Working on the new video. How I took this lady from not liking carving and long turns to absolutely ripping in 3 days. BigPictureSkiing Subscribers will soon have access to the progressions, exercises and methodology used to create this kind of a result. #skiinstructor #skiing #carving #acceleratedlearning

18.01.2022 Skiing with Jenny at Perisher. 18 degrees Celsius!

18.01.2022 Sunday night appreciation for world class athletes. I love how clearly @perrinelaffont shows getting her pelvis forward to help drive the knees and ski tips in towards the next mogul. I love my mogul skiing and continue to work at improving my ability to ski faster and smoother. This movement is not easy and for me took a different way of thinking to get it to begin happening in my own skiing. People talk about hip extension or just pulling the heels back over the back of the bump. This is part of it but not what I felt gave the whole full movement. Adding what the pelvis and spine do was what really improved this part of my mogul skiing. To me I see this very clearly in the video. I hope this slow mo helps some skiers see something new.

16.01.2022 Some nice feedback from one of the bigpictureskiing.com subscribers. Pretty good value if you can get these kind of results via online learning.

14.01.2022 Almost finished the first video in a long series coming to www.bigpictureskiing.com It’s very exciting to look back and see Emma show this much improvement in our first half of the first day working on carving. The first video to be released in two days focuses on the top of the turn. #skiinstructor #skiing #ski #carving #learning

12.01.2022 Seeing things in terms of levers. @garyward_aim and @barrunning both opened my eyes up to seeing movement in regards to levers and cogs. Note the section that says a second class lever is incredibly powerful- much more so than a first class lever. Once you realize this and want to apply that to skiing through your feet you then need to work on ensuring your lever bar works as best as possible as a rigid bar. Ie the arches of the feet have many joints in them. These allow mobility, but for class 2 use, these joints can be possible weaker points as the foot try’s to act as a rigid bar. Engaging the arches so the bones align with each other makes the foot more of a rigid lever arm.

11.01.2022 Headed to the snow tomorrow. I think I’m dreaming if I think it is going be anything like Aspen conditions : @timsanders0n Snowmass Aspen Colorado in February.

10.01.2022 Last turns for season 2020 Australia. Very happy to ski bumps as they are my favorite type of skiing. I’ve had some great times this winter and am very grateful to the staff of nsw ski resorts. Well done for pulling it off. I didn’t think we would have a season at all at one stage!

08.01.2022 I’ve been getting some great feedback of late on the content in bigpictureskiing I really believe it is a great resource for any avid skier, ski instructor, or ski racer. I put a lot of time, effort and thought into the videos I produce on various topics. This winter if you are looking for the thing that will make a difference to you progressing at a faster rate than normal I’d love you to give bigpictureskiing.com a try Thanks Tom

06.01.2022 Use of the inside hand here in a pretty successful way in my opinion. I like people that think outside the box or the norm. Also I like to watch outliers that succeed against what other experts believe is wrong technique. Looking to see what you can learn from the ones that look different is a rewarding process that I will continue to follow. To drag or not to drag? To discourage others.... or seek to explore why you see elite level skiers with their hand on the snow?

06.01.2022 Today marks the halfway point of a trial program I’m running with @samrobbo93 . The goal over 12 weeks is to prepare the whole body for dynamic aligned skiing and exceptional health and well being of the musculoskeletal system. This is done through weekly zoom sessions, exercises on the bigpictureskiing website and a group chat to ask questions and send video for trouble shooting. Today was head and neck day. We began with the feet and ankles and worked out#r way up through the body’s joints to arrive at the skull today. It was very cool to be able to run the session remotely from the top of sunset rock in the blue mtns. Some great results coming from this structured progressive program already. There will be a small intake of 6 people again next month if you’re interested. Keep your eyes peeled for more info or DM Sam or I.

05.01.2022 In most day to day life we learn to balance in line with gravity as it’s the main force acting upon us. In skiing and sports where there is more a circular path taken our body should learn to align itself against a combination of gravity and centripetal force. The wall of death pictured with the motor bike rider i think is a good visual to think about when trying to carve turns with higher edge angles and higher speeds. Your skis create the wall of death for you to ride.

04.01.2022 New video content added to www.bigpictureskiing.com The pivot slip exercise but not as you probably know it. In this concise video I take you through what I’m feeling in my body, how i create this feeling and what I’m doing with the skis to create a grippy round short turn. Pivot slips usually encourage a flat ski and skidding turns to get you feeling turning with the lower body. My take on the exercise though is to teach you how this turns into early edge in your short turns. Up now for all the subscribers check it out.

04.01.2022 Excelerator at blue cow last week was in great shape.

04.01.2022 Appreciation for how this champion controls her hands and arms. It’s done so well that each bump impact is easily dealt with as one impact. Not several impacts which can be the result of poor timing of hands and arms with the rest of the body. One thing I’ve learnt this last year is how important the arms are in skiing. They deserve a lot more attention than Most people think. More than just keep them quiet and forward that’s for sure.

03.01.2022 Webinar tomorrow. Link to register https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php

03.01.2022 Why it is important to understand levers in the body and what the different types of levers can give you in your skiing. In this example a class 1 lever is the ankle joint good for rebalancing mass over the same area of support. A class two lever is better though at shifting large loads short distances. So for applying pressure to the tip of the ski or tail of the ski class two leverage is more efficient.

02.01.2022 Aspen February, 2020. Some of the best groomer skiing I’ve experienced to date. Video: Tim Sanderson for Carv YouTube clip coming soon

01.01.2022 I’ve had some great days skiing this winter in Australia. The highlight being a four day filming project with @carv.ski in perisher. We must have done something right because we timed four of the best days of the year. @timsanders0n I can’t wait for the release of the YouTube ski lesson clips we made. I think people will appreciate them too.
