25.01.2022 Did you know we have an affiliated vet? If you are local to Adelaide and looking for a pro balanced raw feeding vet, this might be a good opportunity for you. Dr Gregory Wright and I studied at the same university together over 7 years ago. Since graduating, he has travelled Australia and the globe working in a number of veterinary clinics interstate and in Micronesia. His knowledge and experience far beyond his years of work. ... All consults are within your home which may be an easier option for dogs who are fearful, aggressive or anxious within a clinic. Along with general checkups and everything a regular vet would do, he also offers: - Affordable annual TITRE testing to check for immunity as an alternative to annual vaccinations - Quarterly faecal floats to check for intestinal worms (a MUST for raw feeders) - An array of blood tests and explanation of results - Skin scrapings to check for mites and scabies (recommenced for highly itchy dogs before commencing an elimination diet to rule out these parasites) I find often myself that these services are not openly on offer at many clinics. Having known Dr Wright for so long and having him treat my own dogs gives me confidence to advocate his services and be affiliated with his practice Home Vet. If you have any questions, looking for a quote or would like to know more please contact either myself here or Dr Gregory Wright on 0414000838.

20.01.2022 Robbie being treated to a massage 4 years ago, this special boy began experiencing severe skin irritation while being fed commercial BARF and Advance dry food. The vet prescribed Cortisone but his owner looked into other options and consulted us for a personalised raw diet plan. Once his digestive system adjusted, his skin cleared up, he no longer had ear infections and gunky eye buildup. ... 4 years on and his owner is exploring muscle maintenance coupled with his good diet. This is a short snippet of his first massage. Now that he is moving to Adelaide he will be receiving these more frequently to keep him in top condition.

16.01.2022 If you have an itchy dog, read this post by @drlufenny_holisticvet Food Elimination Diet Trials (part 1) If you’ve heard of this term before, your poor fur-babe probably has some kind of itchy-skin problem, or allergic skin disease. ... And if your pet gets itchy skin, I really feel for you, it’s the worst thing ever! It’s frustrating for you, your pet and also your Vet because sadly there is no cure, there is only management. Allergic Skin Disease can be caused by the following: External parasites living on the skin Food Intolerances (most commonly and in this order: Beef, Dairy, Chicken, Wheat, Soy) Environmental Allergens (House dust mites, pollens, grasses etc) Once parasites have been ruled out, a thorough food elimination diet trial is a super important step in getting to the bottom of your pets problem. In fact a food diet trial is worth undertaking for any pets who suffer the following signs: Chronic itchy skin / hair loss (usually paws, abdomen, armpits, flanks) Chronic ear infections IBD or Chronic GI disturbances (gas / diarrhoea / weight loss) Hives & facial swelling Crusty / flaky skin Pinpoint skin crusts (military dermatitis) . . Please also bare in mind that nutritional deficiencies may also be contributing to your dogs skin inflammation, dryness or irritation. An elimination diet can be quite restrictive so it is important that once you establish WHAT you can feed that it is nutritionally balanced to ensure deficiencies won’t cause further issues. 15.01.2022 Happy 10th birthday to the beautiful Bono Such a gentle soul.

14.01.2022 Beautiful Willow Her owner approached us in October last year, concerned about nutritional balance for her GSP who experiences seasonal allergies. In early 2019 she was on Cortisone, Cytopoint, Zyrtec and Simparcia for hot spots, yeasty ears and blood noses from her allergies. In November last year, Willow’s diet was balanced with a chicken and lamb meat free recipe. Local honey was utilised to help moderate seasonal allergies and since being on this plan she hasn’t needed... medication, been affected by hotspots or had ear issues. We love continuing to watch you thrive

13.01.2022 Love when a new local raw business opens Welcome to Noble Pet Food locates in Adelaide, Valley View! I have worked closely with the owner in the past, and I love that she has created a shop filled with house made natural treats, fresh and frozen raw meals, meats and bones, and along with a selection of pre made commercial foods including Prime100.... They have only been open for 9 weeks and the shop is tucked away off the main road, making parking easy for everyone but reducing its visibility to the general public. Help support local businesses who are helping us keep our pets healthy send them some love, give them a like or pass by the shop if you’re ever in the area

12.01.2022 Sardines, Mackerel and Salmon We suggest salmon as a sometimes fish and sardines or mackerel as a regular fish to include in your dog’s diet. Despite the fact that salmon has a high concentration of omega 3 fatty acids, sardines and mackerel take the cake in our books because:... Sardines and mackerel have a higher content of vitamin D and selenium which can be lacking in home made diets. Sardines are more cost effective, both raw and canned. Smaller fish contain less mercury as they’re lower down the food chain. Raw wild caught salmon in some parts of the world have a high chance of containing a parasite called Nanophyetus salmincola. This can cause Salmon poisoning in dogs if the infected raw salmon is not frozen for an extended period of time, cooked or canned.

12.01.2022 I have been seeing 6 year old Robbie as a nutritionist for 4 years and as a massage therapist for 2 months. He is exercised regularly at the beach and this has caused tension and spasms upon touch along the full length of his spine. Early treatment of this tension prevents pain, discomfort and further issues from the down the track. After his massage the spasms disappeared and now he’s one happy

12.01.2022 Liver Vs Kidney We all know the importance of organs in the raw diet for B vitamins, vitamin A and trace minerals and many of us have the ability to access kidney and liver easily through supermarkets, butchers and pet food centres. But what’s the difference? Can one substitute the other? ... Details on their nutritional breakdown of lamb liver and lamb kidney is attached. In this comparison only lamb offal will be discussed. Let’s look at the main standout points: Vitamin A Liver has significantly more vitamin A then kidney. Being so dense in this nutrient means that the quantity should be moderated. Vitamin A should not exceed more than 16,000 retinol equivalents (RAE) per 1000 kcal metabolisable energy. To give an idea of how much this is, it is the equivalent of just under 350g of liver in a 1000cal diet (1000cal is the approx energy required for a 25kg adult dog with low activity). B Vitamins Many of the B Vitamins in liver are significantly higher than that in kidney. These are water solvable and should be provided daily in the diet. There is also no maximum or unsafe quantity as excess will pass through urine. Copper This can be lacking in raw diets that are not balanced correctly. Liver has almost 20x more copper than kidney. It is important to remember that zinc and copper should remain in a 10:1 ratio as excess copper can displace zinc and other elements. Iron & Selenium Kidney’s have slightly higher iron and selenium than liver, while having lower levels of copper, B vitamins and significantly lower levels of vitamin A. This makes kidney ideal for being used as a means of increasing iron and selenium specifically without causing copper and vitamin A levels to increase significantly as it would with liver. Can you replace kidney with liver? In most diets it is possible provided liver is not in excess. Kidney would be more beneficial in a puppy diet to increase the iron content without increasing the vitamin A and copper in the diet. Can you replace liver with kidney? Based on the above and the attached image, a diet that has predominantly kidney and no liver may be lacking vitamin A, possibly vitamin D, copper and B vitamins and these nutrients would need to be covered by other means in the meal. Having the two organs together in a meal is ideal, however if liver alone is all you have access to, a meal is still able to meet nutritional standards if balanced correctly.

12.01.2022 So very proud of this pup and his Mum We have been working with Pumbaa since he was a pup to control his chronic itching through a natural, restricted ingredient diet. Although he does still itch occasionally, he is no longer red raw, scratching until he bleeds and is free from medication. Not only does his owner touch base regularly to make sure she’s on track, but she also utilises the advice of a herbalist as a means of supporting his overall health. We love that he’s happy, content and medication free

11.01.2022 Dogs go whacko for Smacko’s, but should we be prioritising these over other treats? Let’s do an ingredient breakdown: Meat and Meat By-Products from Beef - relatively vague, this could be beef trimmings, organs and entrails. When fresh and fed raw, these are highly nutritious. In processed foods they are often extruded at high heats to seperate the fat and the protein, to assist with preservation and to remove bacteria. These high heats affect the nutritional quality of th...ese meat products. Vegetable Protein - again a vague ingredient, in most pet foods this is a soy based protein. Sucrose - sugar. Be mindful that this is the third ingredient on the list. Cereal Protein - another vague listing. Could be sourced from wheat gluten, or any other cereal grain. Humectant - this keeps treats soft and chewy. There are two commonly used humectant: propylene glycol (a petrochemical) and vegetable glycerine. Often if it’s not identified as vegetable glycerine it is derived from petrochemicals. Salt - used to enhance flavour and preserve. Flavour - no artificial flavours is listed on the packaging, so we can assume this is natural. Preservatives - undisclosed as to which types. The packaging does not list these as being natural and they could be anything from BHA, BHT to Ethoxyquin. Antioxidants - to prevent oxidation, vague and undisclosed as to which ones. Colour - vague, no information on packaging stating these are not artificially derived. How does this compare to natural treats? Dehydrated kangaroo tendon: 100% kangaroo tendon Bully Stick: 100% dehydrated bulls penis Natural Beef Liver: 100% dehydrated beef liver Natural Lamb Lung Puffs: 100% dehydrated lamb lung Buying locally dehydrated treats not only supports your community but also helps align with providing a balanced, chemical free diet for your dog. Smacko’s are a sometimes food like McDonalds and 2 minute Mie Goreng noodles

10.01.2022 Your dog needs less ball time When a dog drops a ball, their favourite toy, a stick or even a leaf at your feet, it’s hard to resist throwing it for them. But on a serious note, aspects of this high intensity game may affect the wellbeing of some dogs. It is important to understand what concerns there may be and how to play the game appropriately. ...Continue reading

10.01.2022 Natural is ideal, but when you’re dealing with limited ingredient supply, allergies or dietary and health concerns, supplements in a raw diet are necessary to ensure nutritional balance. A multi vitamin won’t sufficiently cover these gaps. Please only use supplements when working with a nutritionist as it is essential that you are not using these concentrated nutrients in excess.

07.01.2022 Probiotics, Prebiotics and Enzymes We all know our dog should be getting one or more of these, but what’s the difference? Probiotics: ... These are good bacteria for your dogs GI tract. They will help maintain the balance between bacteria and yeast within the digestive system. Most commercial diets lack sufficient probiotics, even if the label states they have been added. Dogs who have recently been on antibiotics, or have been fed commercial food all their life will benefit from probiotics added into their diet. This can be either in the form of a supplement or through probiotic foods such as kefir, yoghurt and fermented vegetables. These are especially important for dogs exhibiting skin or gut concerns. Feed probiotics 1hr before a meal, as per packaging directions or the direction of your holistic vet. Prebiotics: This is the soluble fibre that feeds the probiotics. By combining the two, you get more bang for your buck. Prebiotics include cooked pumpkin, slippery elm, blueberries, banana and Jerusalem artichokes just to name a few. Feed with probiotics or as per direction of your holistic vet. Enzymes: These little guys are proteins naturally produced by your dog’s pancreas to help break down proteins, fats and starches. Some dogs who have been on commercial food for some time may lack these enzymes and may struggle switching to raw. The lack may be exhibited as reflux, loose stools, sticky/smelly/yellow stools or other gut concerns when trailing a new diet. The addition of a commercially available enzyme supplement (recommended) or a small amount of pineapple will help your dog correctly digest their food. Follow the direction on the packaging or the guidance of your holistic vet. Baring this in mind, not all dogs will require all of the above. For most dogs, a good quality source of probiotics and a prebiotic is helpful for maintaining health and wellbeing. Other dogs showing GI concerns may need all three. If you’re unsure what may be helpful for your dog, we’re always happy to chat You can read more about the difference between probiotics and enzymes in detail here: https://www.pethonesty.com//probiotics-vs-digestive-enzyme And about the mechanism of enzymes here: https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/enzymes-and-your-dog/ Image courtesy of Krystn Janisse, Homes Alive Pets

03.01.2022 Massage isn’t just for dogs with arthritis and sporting dogs. In many cases, it can provide emotional therapy for anxious or anti-social dogs. Dahlia has had 3 treatments over the last few months and her owners can confirm that this timid Shepherd has become more social within the family and confident outside of the home. She has gone from not wanting to be touched to settling into massage over the course of the session. Well done Dahlia, we’re all so proud of your rapid progress

03.01.2022 We are all starting to become more aware of what an obese animal looks like, what cuddly pet weight looks like and what a lean, healthy animal looks like. For those who have already identified that their pet may be overweight but are struggling to budge the kilos, this article outlines all the things you should be looking at as contributing factors. When your pet’s weight is not budging, always check to make sure it is not disease related. Your vet will advise what tests ...should be ran. First and foremost, getting diet right and providing adequate exercise are essential. Feeding a natural diet and allowing the dogs blood to pump through their body daily will help organ function, detoxification and aid in weight loss. What most people don’t consider is stressors, depression, hormonal concerns and incorrect gut balance. These are all factors that should be looked into and addressed after disease has been ruled out. If you have any questions regarding helping your dog lose a few kilos, send us a message anytime.
