09.01.2022 Seems like an appropriate time to share this post from Pyramid Views that was shared last year Storm Phobias Animal Antics- Steph Williams ... We have briefly touched on noise phobias in a previous issue. In recent weeks in Gordonvale and the Cairns region we have endured some interesting weather. With these storms and high winds, there have been huge numbers of dogs escaping their yards, injuring themselves, or even worse being hit by cars and killed (this just recently sadly happened out the front of our clinic). I felt it was timely to discuss some ways of keeping your dog safe during bad weather. Some dogs become anxious and stressed during thunder storms and it can get progressively worse as the dog ages. For these dogs, it is truly terrifying for them. In a state of panic dogs jump through glass windows, cutting themselves badly and run onto the road without even noticing cars. Sometimes they can become so stressed an anxious that they can suffer cardiac and respiratory distress and pass away (especially older dogs). Early intervention, training and medication is not only essential for the animal’s welfare, but it can result in a better long-term outcome for the dog in terms of preventing other forms of anxiety (like noise phobias and separation anxiety). A few key concepts in managing storm phobias in dogs include: Creating a Safe Place: o Crate/Pen or even a small room of the house, like the laundry can be a safe den for your dog and can be used as an everyday safe sleeping spot, well before the dog becomes stressed. In a storm event, you can lock your dog in their den/crate, which will give your dog comfort and prevents escaping into harm’s way. Remaining calm do not reprimand them and try not to make it into a big deal. Comforting them is completely fine, but it often isn’t enough. Some dogs find comfort in wearing tight fitting anxiety wrap like the thunder shirt. In an emergency you can put on a tight fitting kids shirt which may help. Modify the behaviour: o Desensitise and counter conditioning are two techniques that can give you an excellent long-term solution. Noise is one component to this type of phobia, but pressure changes and wind can be harder to desensitise dogs to. We are fortunate enough to have some great dog trainers in Cairns who can help train us owners, to train our dogs Medications: o I cannot emphasise how helpful and kind appropriate medication can be to the dog who is suffering. We tend to fear overmedicating dogs. These days we have some fantastic, safe medications that help keep your dog fear free and comfortable without making them sedated. Storm phobias are very common for dogs and there is a lot we can do as the owners to manage it. With the help of your veterinarian, a reputable dog trainer or behaviourists you can achieve a happy stress-free life for yourself and dog.
