25.01.2022 Choosing gifts which include technology can be a tricky choice. The @Office of the eSafety Commissioner has put together a fabulous gift guide to help you make safer choices. In particular, Drones are becoming a very popular gift, it's important that any child being given one is able to understand issues around privacy, can understand the rules and regulations (there are hefty fines for breaches) and has the patience to operate the device. ... You can read more about drones in the gift guide! https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/gift-guide

23.01.2022 On the eve of Safer Internet Day. Facebook havé updated the Messenger Kids app to give parents more control. After facing criticism last year over privacy concerns when kids could bypass certain features . the app now is a much better place for introducing kids to digital communication.... New parent dashboard features include Recent Contacts and Chat History: See who your child is chatting with, whether they are video chatting or sending messages and how frequently those conversations happened over the past 30 days. Log of Images in Chats: See the most recent photos and videos your child has sent and received in their inbox. If you believe an image or video is not appropriate for your child, you can remove it from your child’s message thread and report it. Reported and Blocked Contacts History: Access a list of the reporting and blocking actions your child has taken in the app. You’ll see a list of the contacts your child has blocked and/or unblocked, if they have reported any messages as well as any contacts they’ve reported and the reason for their action. Parents will continue to be notified via Messenger if their child blocks or reports someone. Remote Device Logout: See all devices where your child is logged in to Messenger Kids and log out of the app on any device through the Parent Dashboard. (Note: This feature is not meant to control when kids have access to the app try Sleep Mode for that.) Download Your Child’s Information: Request a copy of your child’s Messenger Kids information, similar to how you can download your own information within the Facebook app. The download will include a list of your child’s contacts as well as the messages, images and videos they have sent and received. Your child will be notified through the Messenger Kids app when you request this information. Facebook do not collect data on children and will never share childrens information with other parties. The app is ad free. You can learn more here: https://messengerkids.com

23.01.2022 Today is RUOK Day and its so vital that we look out for each other. Is there someone you know who is maybe reacting differently to situations? Withdrawn or just communicating differently? 23.01.2022 A feature we have been waiting for! Facebook finally has provided us the ability to clear history and give insight into just what is shared about you (and your kids) when it comes to data used for advertising targetting. i highly recommend running it as soon as possible and use this as a great way to have a discussion with your children about privacy and how data is gathered without us even being aware . From retailers, payment apps, news sites, games and quizzes and other... online services you will have the opportunity to erase data that has been gathered. Let us know your experience! A great post from Mari Smith walks through where to find the feature.

22.01.2022 We are facing some really stressful times globally right now - but what is important is that we keep our children positive and optimistic. Teaching them the importance of social distancing and extra careful hygiene right now is vital - but what children, especially young children don't need is to have the news on 24/7 especially with many media outlets competing for the most sensational headline. Staying calm and staying home is important right now - but instead of televi...sion /new reports, put on music and encourage play. if your children ask about what is happening in the world - answer them but be calm and informative. Tell them that some people might get very sick and that it's important we all work together to protect them. Common Sense Media have put together a great list of online resources to help you cope with #socialisolation If you have other great activities for kids , please share them with us

19.01.2022 New research from the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. indicates a link between cyberbullying, depression and post traumatic stress disorder. Findings from research with teens in psychiatric care by Phillip D Harvey Ph.D showed that children with a history of being abused were found to be more likely to be cyberbullied, and likewise, children who report being cyberbullied should be assessed for a history of childhood trauma. The study also found that:... Being online regularly or the amount of time spent on social media weren't determining factors in who was cyberbullied. Cyberbullying cuts across all economic classes and ethnic backgrounds. Adolescents who have been bullied in the past had a higher risk of being bullied again. It highlights the importance for psychologists, psychiatrists and other counsellors to ask children about bullying and or other childhood trauma/abuse. As parents/carers, we need to be diligent in having conversations and encouraging blocking of perpetrators who bully.

16.01.2022 A fabulous resource in Australia is the information provided by the eSafety Commission. One of the the things they can assist Australian's with, is image based abuse. Around 11% of Australians over 18 have experienced image based abuse. It's something we need to talk to our kids about early, so they are prepared to protect their privacy and make better decisions. So what is image based abuse? ... Image-based abuse (IBA) happens when an intimate image or video is shared without the consent of the person pictured. Some people know it as "revenge porn". This includes images or videos that have been digitally altered (using Photoshop or specialised software). It can also include the threat of sharing such images. An intimate image is one that shows: a person’s genital area or anal area (whether bare or covered by underwear) a person’s breasts (if the person identifies as female, transgender or intersex) private activity (for example a person undressing, using the bathroom, showering, bathing or engaged in sexual activity) a person without attire of religious or cultural significance if they would normally wear such attire in public. You can report abuse on the link below: https://www.esafety.gov.au//take-action/report-to-esafety-

05.01.2022 Tips on CoVid19 for parents from World Health Organization (WHO)

04.01.2022 In this video, a team from Bark went undercover to show just how easy it is for a 15 year old , or an 11 year old to be approached by pedophiles and predators online. It's important that parents have open discussions with their children about these types of conversations so that they are aware and can shut them down. It highlights the importance of not allowing very young children to sign up to apps which are also used freely by adults, and not to lie about their birthdate wh...en joining. Check the app for age guidelines and if it says not suitable for under 13's - then don't sign up. As parents, we also need to make sure our young teens feel comfortable sharing information with us, and know they can come to us if they are confronted by inappropriate conversations. It is vital that we also teach our young people to speak respectfully to each other, and not to normalise sexual speech in everyday conversations.
