So I fear nothing. #WWI Digger Patrick Bugden wrote this from England to his mum, Annie, back in nort...hern NSW in 1917 just before heading to the killing fields of France and Belgium. I think of the Private's words often, more so as Anzac Day nears each year. It's especially front of mind now as Australia squares up to the deadly #coronavirus. #AnzacDay has become our de facto national day, when we remember the sacrifice of our servicemen and women. We highlight and praise their courage, selflessness, endurance, comradeship and commitment to a higher purpose. It makes us feel proud and special. I wonder what Paddy and his mates would think of those current Australians who are coward-buying, taking more than they need and leaving others with none. How would they regard the brawls in shops over toilet paper? These men who lived frozen in mud, ate stale bread and dripping, slept to the shrill of exploding shells and ran at firing machine guns? Pte Bugden was killed in action on September 28, 1917 (aged 20) at Polygon Wood, Belgium. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. Like Paddy, let's strive to be free of deeds we are ashamed of so when the #covid19 danger passes, we can look our fellow Aussies in the eyes.
