23.01.2022 ‘Benefit of the doubt’ what does that actually mean? Until we know what someone’s intention is, we can’t know! It’s about withholding judgment until we know the backstory. Of course, it’s possible that intentions aren’t always honourable but giving someone the benefit of the doubt can be helpful in a few ways, including:... 1 To reduce the chance of getting into arguments or conflict situations. Conflict happens when we make assumptions about other people, and they then make assumptions back. 2 To build trust. 3 To improve our relationships and reduce stress arguments tend to happen less often. 21.01.2022 Moving is the opposite of feeling immobilised an experience connected with Depression. Depression can make it hard to get out of bed in the morning, and difficult to find the energy needed for even small tasks during the day. Moving doesn’t need to involve strenuous exercise. A 10-minute walk around the block once a day can be a big achievement, and start to make a difference to your mood and quality of sleep. ... Small steps like this can be a realistic way to build up to goals like 20-30 minutes the daily amount of physical activity recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
13.01.2022 Have you every wondered what the difference is between Empathy and Sympathy? Empathy is being able to be fully present for someone else, it’s like taking a walk alongside a concerned friend. When we experience empathy, we’re more likely to feel heard and understood, and connected through sharing hard-to-speak-about experiences. Sympathy on the other hand can often be associated with pity or ‘feeling sorry for’ someone else’s situation. It can be more of an alienating experien...ce competitive even. @brenebrown nicely describes the difference in this short animation: https://youtu.be/1Evwgu369Jw A benefit of talking with a counsellor is that they can offer empathy when you are experiencing difficult times. They are trained to listen objectively and with openness. Image: Brene Brown
08.01.2022 Do you know what your values are, and why that’s even important? Values are like road signs that guide you to where you’re going and can keep you focused on your destination. Your strengths are like driving skills, and can help you navigate the road conditions.... Working with a counsellor, it’s possible to reconnect with what’s important to you your values and to become more aware of your personal strengths.
03.01.2022 What’s outside my control: What other people say and think about me What’s within my control: What I say and do when I am around other people... - When you feel tired and vulnerable it can be easy to focus on what’s outside your control. This can lead to feeling sad, powerless, disappointed, angry or anxious. When we can get clear about what’s potentially within our control, we are able to live more in the here-and-now, feel more accepting of others and more comfortable with our own choices.
