16.01.2022 The finished demonstration piece. I teach Senior Art at Encounter Lutheran College, and a few weeks ago we were chatting while we worked and marveling at the designs on everyone's pencil cases. I said I thought it would be fun to be a pencil case designer and my students agreed. I jumped straight online and bought a stack of plain canvas pencil cases. My students will study various textile designers, then come up with their own design. They can paint, stitch, lino print, appl...ique, etc., their design onto their pencil case. Just as we wrote our names on pencil cases when we were young, the design has to say who we are, how we think, or how we fit into the world. My design is a comment on my depression. It doesn't matter how beautiful your world appears to others, if you have depression, you still cry. Happily my depression is well under control with medication, but I feel that the more normalised mental health discussion can be, the better our young ones will be at seeking help if they need it.
