25.01.2022 We have some super hot weather coming our way this weekend. Make sure you stay well hydrated - water taps are available at the trailhead. Local tip: maybe plan your ride for the morning before the temperature builds up. Have fun, ride safe. Quick heads-up. There are a few sections of long grass and weeds on the trail - these sections should not impact your riding too much this weekend, after all, you are a mountain biker - you like a little challenge. ... The good news is the long grass will be fixed soon - the big mower is back next Wednesday morning to trim the whole trail (thanks to Australian Botanic Garden for arranging this). See more
25.01.2022 Trail day 10th October. Advanced Trail. Those wonderful volunteers were at it again today finishing another 600m of trail along the hillside. Apart from plenty... of riding features including a multiple log / rock rolls, a short rock skinny, jumps and berms, this will just be a very nice area to ride through the tall trees. During our work we had a 'quality control' inspection from a large monitor lizard and a magpie - they seemed suitably impressed - I am sure riders will be also when the trail is open. We still have lots of trail to do and our aim is still to open the Advanced Trail by the end of 2020. None of this work would be possible were it not for the efforts of all the volunteers who give up their riding time to make this happen for you. If you can help us out, even for an hour or so, our next trail day is coming up on Sunday 25th October - the details are listed under 'events'. Please remember, the Advanced Trail is closed. The surface is loose and soft and will need time to settle. Please do not ride this trail - not only are there potential rider hazards from unfinished work but some soft sections of the trail would require extra volunteer work to fix which will slow do the overall trail build. Be a good mountain biker - do not ride closed trails.
25.01.2022 Trail has reopened now. Riding well and in good condition. Thank you for not riding the trail when it is wet and soft - it reduces the time the volunteers give up riding to do extra maintenance. Don’t forget about the Wednesday morning closure for heavy maintenance in the area. Have fun.
25.01.2022 Trail will reopen from 10am today. Thanks to Australian Botanic Garden and their contractor for the rectification work to improve the trail entry, resolve the drainage issues which affected the MTB trail at that point and to make the area safe for all users. It is going to be a great weekend. Enjoy your riding - ride safe.
25.01.2022 Updated signs were installed this week. Thank you Australian Botanic Garden for your ongoing support of the trail.
24.01.2022 Just a quick reminder on the Wednesday morning maintenance closures. https://www.facebook.com//a.105185314158/308587043818576/
23.01.2022 Great to see kids hitting the trail. He might only be 6 years old but he gave everything a go on the Family Loop and had dad chasing him down the trail. He will only get better and faster over the next few years - dad might have trouble keeping up. Thanks for the video Adam.
23.01.2022 Trail day - August. Garden Trail. Trail fairies (a.k.a. those awesome volunteers) braved the chilly winds today to make a super fun 150m section near the end of... the Family Loop. We added in three berms and a few rollers to make a lovely, flowy roll through the gully. You can ride this section fast or slow - your call - either way will put a smile on your face. Hope you enjoy it. We also fixed up an eroded section and a narrow 'pedal-catcher' which were a bit challenging for riders on a green trail and sorted out a few drainage issues. The next trail day will be the start of the Advanced Trail - we are a bit excited - we will share the details soon. Thanks.
22.01.2022 This wet and warm Spring has been great for gardens and lawns everywhere - even though, like me, you may already be tired of mowing your yard every second week ! The area around the trail is no exception. In some spots on the trail the tall native grasses and those less-likable spikey weeds have been been growing faster than the volunteers have been able to knock them back down and we are seeing these encroach on the trail. The good news is there is a plan in place to have t...he trail corridor cut back by a heavy mower in the next couple of weeks. To enable this to happen the trail will need a few more mid-week closures (which we will give plenty of notice of) to enable to large machines to work safely. The trail is still very ridable - the growth is just adding temporary challenge to your ride to make sure you do not brush against one of those spikey thistles. Thanks for your feedback and patience. Have fun. Ride safe.
22.01.2022 Hi, trail will be open to ride from 8am Sunday morning. Take it easy on your first lap as there are still a few soft spots. Like many trails around Sydney the Garden Trail is struggling to dry out with the consistent rains of the past month (highest July total in 10 years). The volunteers have done a great job to make sure the trail drains well, however, as the ground is now so wet there is seepage moving down the hills. A small group of volunteers fixed some troublesome spo...ts this afternoon so you can enjoy a ride tomorrow. Have fun. Ride safe. (Special note: thanks to everyone staying off the trail while it has been closed - by staying off the wet trail you saved the volunteers a lot of unnecessary work).
22.01.2022 Free shovel and rake lessons - followed by a free cold drink. Our next trail day for the Garden Trail is coming up this Saturday. If you can spare some time it would be great to see you.
21.01.2022 Great work by a dedicated bunch of volunteers (including some new faces ) on the Advanced Trail (Garden MTB Trail) this morning. Another 800m of fun, fast and ...flowy stuff was finished today. The photos do not do justice to the quality of the work of the volunteers keep delivering, however, this is just some of the new stuff we got done. Photo 1. Flowy entry leading to the new jump. Photo 2. New jump - A-line left and B-line right - with tapered landing to keep your momentum for the next rise. Photo 3. Top of the refurbished rock roll leading to the big berm. Photo 4. A-line (left) rock drop straight to the new jump and straight into the big berm. B-line on right. Reminder as always - these sections are not yet open to be ridden. If you want to ride these sooner come to one of the trail days and help us get the Advanced Trail finished. Thanks volunteers - none of this would be happening without you.
20.01.2022 Great to see the kids (and parents!) hitting the Garden Trail. Great video. Thanks Todd https://youtu.be/NsW_6PyQvGY
19.01.2022 Merry bunch having some fun trying out various features. Good stuff guys - always nice to see people having fun on the trail. (hey - where is my cupcake?) FYI: The grass and weeds have had a haircut since this was shot. Great weather forecast for this weekend - have fun, ride safe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5DepjK4SBw
19.01.2022 TRAIL DAY SEPTEMBER - Garden MTB Trail Wonderful group of volunteers this morning finished a section of the Advanced Trail. Main focus was the new climb with si...x switchbacks to get you up to the top hopefully with something left in the tank. Immediately after climb is a short, speedy recovery descent through the trees with two jumps which will be a blast. The new climb has been duly named 'Snails' after we came across two endangered Cumberland Plains Land snails. Once the trail is opened these snails and their friends will be watching you on that climb. We also got some other features built, restored the rock climb and had the excavators clear another large section of trail ready for our next trail day. As a little thank you to the volunteers Sunday Road Brewing provided us with a carton of their excellent Blackwood Pale Ale to enjoy after the work was done. Thank you - it was just what we needed after a big day. Our next trail day will be posted soon. If you want to help bring the trail back quicker please consider coming along to give us a hand. It would be nice to see you. As a reminder, the Advanced Trail is not open and must not be ridden. Do not be one of those riders who thinks rules do not apply to you - you will end up having an interesting conversation the Ranger. Big shout out to the volunteers making this happen for you.
19.01.2022 Small crew of volunteers this morning worked through a few showers during this morning's trail day on the Garden Trail. Got some great work done and had just en...ough time for a beer at the end as the showers returned. The focus was to install the 3 x 600mm high timber drops and to cut in the new A-line. We also freshened up a berm and reshaped the nearby doubles / gap jump just before Snails climb. The timber drops were the last major item we had planned for the Garden Trail - we actually had these planned for before the Advanced Trail opening but we ran out of time in December. However, we are not done - you will continue to see new little features, constant tweaks and other little improvements to keep the trail fun, fast and flowy. Trail days will be held each month - if you can spare a morning or even an hour your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
19.01.2022 Sneak peak at another section of the 4km Advanced Trail that is coming along quite nicely. This is on the last descent and include three 180 degree downhill berms, a number of small dirt jumps, a tabletop and some other things - it will be fast and fun. The skillful excavators operators have done almost all the hard work but the trail does need final finishing by hand......... and the more hands we get, the sooner we can get the Advanced Trail opened. The volunteers from the Wollondilly Macarthur MTB Club could really use a hand over the next few trail days to make this happen quicker. Keep an eye out for the trail days - the next one is coming up on the 28/11 and a couple in December as we push to get this finished.
18.01.2022 Getting ready to hit the trail. Fantastic to see the all the riders heading out on the trail today - once the gate was opened - they were off ! And look at the kids at the front of the queue - great way to spend a day during the school holidays.
18.01.2022 Please see event details in link below. https://www.facebook.com/events/359901431980469
17.01.2022 Excavator day to get started on the Advanced Trail at the Garden MTB Trail. Big effort to build a completely new, more progressive, climb with six shaped and be...rmed wide hairpins to replace what was a short, steep, torturous climb. You still have to climb the hill but the extra length and a few little momentum sections will make it achievable for most riders.... and remember, what goes up gets to come back down again on the fun stuff. We also got a few hundred meters either side of this big climb sorted and added in some funky little features. This work today still needs to be hand-finished to make it sweet - we will do this at our next public trail day coming up on September 19th. If you are free check out the events tab for all the details - we would love to see you. Thanks to the small crew helping out today - awesome stuff.
17.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who assisted with the injured rider this morning. It is never nice to hear of a rider being injured but without fail we always hear good things about the great people who stop to render assistance - thank you. Hope the young rider recovers well. As always, the on-site Rangers are the best contact in case of any emergency on the trail - pop the number in your phone - 0409 122 953.
16.01.2022 Wonderful to see the kids (and adults!) exploring the Intermediate Trail. The Intermediate trail is a bit harder and has a few more features compared to the Family Loop but as these riders find out if you take your time and use a little caution on your first lap it is a lot of fun. Good stuff. Enjoy your weekend - hope you get to ride your bike and have fun like these legends.... https://www.youtube.com/watch
15.01.2022 To assist the Australian Botanic Garden with heavy mowing and other maintenance items in the area around the mountain bike trail the trail will be closed every Wednesday morning. The trail will reopen for riding at 12.30pm. The closure is required for your safety as large machines may be working on or near the trail. The machines are constantly moving and may change direction quickly - the operator will be focused on the task they are performing. Loose debris can also be pro...jected some distance from the machines. Please respect the maintenance closures for your safety. Thanks
15.01.2022 Have you been down to our local The Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan recently? We were there this week shooting the Mountain Biking trails this week as pa...rt of our upcoming #WeAreCampbelltown series, and were even luck enough to meet some of the wildlife. Head down today if you're looking for something to do, and tag us in your pictures! You can also submit your images to the Macarthur Nature Photography Competition (Closing Friday) if you have a chance. #WeAreCampbelltown See more
15.01.2022 Hitting the Advanced Trail. Impressive young rider on the hardtail - what a little legend. Look out Dad, it will not be long and you will have to work hard to keep up with him! They had a blast on the features and downhill and got a bit puffed on the climbs, but hey, what goes up gets to come back down on the fun stuff !
15.01.2022 Trail day coming up this Saturday. A new berm to go in plus a quick refresh of some others and a few other tweaks while we are there. Excavator will do the heavy stuff and then you get to finesse it with shovels, rakes or whatever you are comfortable with. If you are curious to see what goes into making and maintaining a trail come along and give us a hand - even an hour of your time is like gold for the trail. Thanks
15.01.2022 Heading up the 'Snails' climb.
14.01.2022 Another awesome video of a couple of riders having a blast on the Garden Trail. Thanks Matt. https://youtu.be/9psX8uThkSc
14.01.2022 Want to help build the trail you ride? We have a public trail day on Saturday morning if you would like to give us a hand -it would be great to see you. All the details are in the link. Saturday may be a chilly start - you might need a jacket. Heads-up - the trail remains open for riding during the trail day, however, we will have a diversion in place at one location for the safety of riders and volunteers. ... https://www.facebook.com/events/752138118933463/ See more
14.01.2022 Trail has reopened. Trail drained and dried well after the big storm yesterday - the attention to drainage by the volunteers who look after the trail is working well. Have fun. Ride safe.
13.01.2022 With all the rain that has already fallen on the trail and some more heavy falls coming in the next few days the trail will not be open this weekend. The trail is already wet, soft and slippery. It will need some time after the rain stops to let it drain and dry enough before it can be reopened. The majority of trails around Sydney will be the same - it is not good form to ride a wet trail - this weekend might be a good time to do some bike maintenance. ... We will open the trail once it is dry enough. Thanks.
13.01.2022 There is a new feature for you to try on the Advanced Trail - the 'Triple Drops'. The Triple Drops are an A-line feature - these are 600mm high drops which will add a bit more fun for the more experienced riders and should put a smile on your face after the short climb. The deck of the each drop is level with a slightly sloping landing. IMPORTANT: At 600mm high the new drops are NOT rollable you must be able to jump off these to a safe landing. Please stop and inspect the ...drops before your first attempt to ensure you are comfortable with the feature. Remember, the A-line is optional the B-line is available alongside the A-line. Please note the new section of trail will be soft and loose until the trail beds down take it easy on your first attempts. Thanks
13.01.2022 Good news. The all day closure today allowed all the heavy mowing to be completed. Gooder news. The planned all day closure for 25th November is not required (but the morning closure is still in place for other maintenance), Goodest news. Those spikey thistles and the long grass has been cut back leaving a nice clear trail corridor (there are a few small patches we will get to with a trimmer soon).... Trail is open again from 8am Thursday. Take it easy on your first lap. Have fun. Ride safe.
13.01.2022 Just a heads up. At the bottom of the first descent there is a soft, sandy, muddy section about 10m long - quite a bit of silt has washed down from the slope after Friday's storm. It looked OK yesterday but with a few more wheels on it this morning it has been churned up a bit. This is still ridable but take it easy on your first lap. It will firm up with this warm weather and we will find a way to fix it soon. ... Thanks
13.01.2022 Great morning with 19 great people for our first social ride in a long time. Wonderful to see some new faces and some faces we have not seen for a while. Casua...l pace, lots of chats, perfect riding weather and with the trail in great condition it all made for a fun, social morning on the bike. Some of us took it easy while some of the faster riders added a few extra sections in and caught back up to the main group, so we all got to ride what we wanted. Social rides will become a monthly event. Next month will be back at the Garden Trail, however, we will start to venture off to other trails in the months following. The date for the next social ride will be posted soon - keep an eye out for it - it would be nice to see you there. Thanks Andrew
12.01.2022 On a day like today - absolutely! Hope you had fun.
10.01.2022 Gee, that was a nice storm - 15mm in 30 minutes. Yep, we have closed the trail - it will be pretty wet. We will have someone check the trail LATE morning on Saturday and provide and update on the trail. Hopefully the focus of the volunteers on draining water off the trail quickly plus some some warm, sunny weather in the morning can see us reopen the trail quickly. ... Please do not ride the trail until we can check it and open it. The trail status is ALWAYS current. Thanks
10.01.2022 Although the mountain bike trail is closed today (1st August - still very damp and soft) it is good to remember all the other activities available within the Garden. Open spaces, walking trails, picnic areas, views and wonderful native bushland and gardens. For those times when you are not riding your bike (yes, there are those times!) the Gardens have so much to offer. https://www.australianbotanicgarden.com.au//Let-Your-Kids-
09.01.2022 Thanks Jason. Trail is looking good after the big mower went through (thumbs up to Australian Botanic Garden). With the tall grass cleared the sight lines are good and the trail is riding fast. There are a few spots the big mower cannot get into which the volunteers will trim when we can and there are some items to fix after the rains but otherwise the trail is riding well. Good riding weather coming up this weekend. Have fun. Ride safe.
09.01.2022 We are excited to advise the Wollondilly Macarthur Mountain Bike Club have received approval to begin the restoration of the Advanced Trail within the Garden MT...B Trail network. Restoration will begin soon with a planned opening late in December 2020. The Advanced Trail is 3.9km in length and rated ‘Intermediate with Difficult Sections’ under MTBA ratings (see link below). The trail is a cross-country (XC) style trail with a large variety of terrain and features expect some climbing, switchbacks, some fast sections, many berms, rollers, natural jumps and timber drops, all situated in a mix of forested hillsides and undulating open grasslands. The trail is oriented towards riders with a medium-high level of mountain biking skills, however, it will be rideable by most riders exercising some initial caution or using the B-lines. The Advanced Trail largely (70%) follows the original trail corridor. In collaboration with the supportive team from the Australian Botanic Garden we have relocated the trail at various locations to protect a rare patch of Western Sydney Dry Rainforest and other valuable native plant species. The revised trail will take the sting out of the original climbs and will ensure that anywhere the trail points downhill or has flow there is something fun to ride or test your skills on. This whole project to bring the trail back to the community is only made possible by volunteers. As with the Family Loop and Intermediate Trails, the restoration of the Advanced Trail will be done entirely by the amazing volunteers who are giving up their riding time. If you would like to be part of this wonderful team of volunteers we would love to see you at one of the Trail Days please keep an eye out for the Trail Day events in the coming months. We are excited to get to this point. and now the real work begins. Thanks https://www.mtba.org.au//Trail-Difficulty-Rating-System-Au
06.01.2022 Say goodbye to those pesky thistles! Trail will be closed ALL DAY Wednesday 18th and 25th November to allow the large mower to work quickly and safely to knock down the tall native grasses and those spikey weeds that are bordering the trail. The full day closure (instead of just a morning closure) should enable to all the mowing work to be completed over the two days. Sorry if Wednesdays are your riding day but this will hopefully impact less riders overall.... Thank you to Australian Botanic Garden for undertaking this work and their continued support for the only authorised mountain bike trail in South West Sydney.
06.01.2022 Trail opening times. There have been a few questions about opening times for the trail now that daylight savings times have begun. We know you want to ride, however, the opening times for the Garden Trail remain 8am to 5pm as per the Australian Botanic Garden opening times until December. Extended hours do apply during the Summer months starting in December. Foundation and Friends members of the Botanic Gardens have all year round sunrise to sunset access to the gardens and ...the mountain bike trail from the Mt Annan Drive gate. (FYI: On Wednesday's the trail does not open until 12.30pm to allow for area maintenance).

06.01.2022 Great news. Thanks to Australian Botanic Garden, almost all the heavy mowing on the trail was completed today. There is some more to do on the Advanced Trail which will be completed before 8am on Thursday morning. The trail will be much nicer to ride now - you will have much better sight lines and your shoes will not fill up with grass seeds. There will be a few spots where the big mower has not been able to get into - the volunteers will get to these when time permits (may...be you can come to the 17/4 trail day to give us a hand?) For those few riders taking advantage of their Foundation & Friends membership for a pre-8am ride please be aware the big mower is on the Advanced Trail. If you do see the big mower operating on the trail please stay at least 100m away - you may need to go cross-country and skip a section. Have fun. Ride safe.
05.01.2022 TRAIL STATUS UPDATE. Sorry, but the trail will not be open on Saturday. The trail was still damp and soft when inspected late this afternoon. We will inspect it again late Saturday afternoon - keep an eye on the trail status to see if we can open it (maybe Sunday). The Garden Trail, like many trails around Sydney, has had a lot of rainfall in the past month and is taking longer and longer to dry out particularly with these cool days. Riding the trail when it is damp and soft ...makes a lot of work for the volunteers to correct - volunteers do awesome work but they would prefer to be making improvements or new trail rather than fixing tyre ruts. Thanks for being good mountain bikers and staying off the Garden Trail when it is wet - it helps us get the trail back open quicker. Thank you.
05.01.2022 Just a little teaser of some of the work the excavators did on Saturday on the Advanced Trail. The excavators can only do 95% of the work - the final 5% to make the trail ridable needs a bit of shovel and rake work. That's where you can help us. If you want to help bring back the Advanced Trail the next trail day is coming up on Sunday 25th October (yep, a Sunday!). If you are free on the day, why not come along and give a hand - the details will be posted soon.
05.01.2022 Have an idle Saturday morning tomorrow - why not give us a hand with the Advanced Trail restoration? And remember the great support On Two Wheels Bicycles are p...roviding for the volunteers. All volunteers at any trail day for the Advanced Trail have their name in the draw for one of six $50 store vouchers from On Two Wheels Bicycles in Gregory Hills. (FYI - the vouchers will be drawn in December after the Advance Trail opens). https://www.facebook.com/events/753926751827954/
05.01.2022 Seven year old Casey rode hard today and completed the entire 10km off-road at the Mt Annan Garden Trail, including the new ‘Advanced’ section. He rode ALL the A-lines and wanted to go around again! Casey and his brothers need bigger jumps and drops! They are hungry for more!
05.01.2022 ** REMINDER ** The trail is closed on all Wednesday mornings. When the trail is showing as 'RIDEABLE' please check the operating hours as noted in the trail status at the top of the page. ... The closure on Wednesday mornings enables the Australian Botanic Garden to do maintenance work on and around the trail without creating a safety hazard for riders or Garden staff. Much of their work is unseen by us as riders but it maximises the time the trail can be open - it could be heavy mowing / slashing, removing potentially unsafe trees / branches near the trail, ongoing African Olive clearing or the spraying of weeds. Thanks.
04.01.2022 A few volunteers from the Wollondilly Macarthur MTB Club gave up their Saturday morning to play in the mud and fix two big issues on the trail. The first picture is a berm which filled with about 400mm of water. We thought about releasing some trout but decided it would be better if we installed a drain pipe under the berm to let the water escape. The second picture shows where about 500kgs of mud washed down onto the trail from some nearby earthworks during the big storm l...ast week. It took a bit shovel work but we got it all cleared. The rest of the trail is still very damp and soft. The trail will remain closed until late next week.
04.01.2022 Always nice to see some of the wildlife when out on the trail. These are some photos riders have shared in recent weeks.
04.01.2022 The big mower is working on the trail from sunrise on Wednesday to knock down the tall grass and weeds. The big mower moves quickly and changes direction without warning - the operator will be focused on the mowing and will not be looking out for riders. For your safety and the safety of the operator please respect the Wednesday morning closure. The trail reopens at 12.30pm on Wednesday.... Thank you.
03.01.2022 GOOD NEWS The trail has reopened following the significant rainfall in the previous week. The trail did have some damage from the heavy rain some short sections were scoured and a few berms suffered heavy erosion when the drains became overwhelmed. The volunteers from Wollondilly Macarthur MTB Club have made some repairs to open the trail but additional work is required over the coming months. NOT SO GOOD NEWS Despite the constant light mowing by the volunteers it has been... impossible to keep pace with the incredible rates of growth of the native grasses and the less desirable weeds across much of the trail. The planned heavy mowing by contractors a few weeks back was interrupted by the significant rainfall and has been further delayed as the heavy mowers may damage the trail or it is too slippery for the heavy mowers to operate safely on the steep slopes either side of the trail. As a result, the grass and weeds are have become very high and have made the trail very narrow in places. The trail will be open to ride over Easter and through the school holidays. The trail is still rideable and most of the features are fine to ride, however, we do need to advise the height and proximity of the grass will impact your ride. We are disappointed we have not been able to have the trail in good condition for you to ride at this time. The heavy mowing will be undertaken in the coming weeks. We will keep you advised of the progress. Thank you for your understanding.
03.01.2022 Like the trail you are riding? Why not come along and help the volunteers make more trail for you and your friend or family to ride?
02.01.2022 Only a small group of volunteers for this morning's trail day on the Garden Trail but we powered though a bunch of tweaks on the Advanced Trail. We added a new... berm near the shortcut, refreshed or reshaped another 4 berms, put in a new double and added some height and length to another. It all makes for a fun, fast, flowy descent for about 300m. The triple drops also got some attention with a downslope landing added to each one. This does reduce the initial height a little but the faster riders who jump longer will find the downslope offers a much more progressive landing. Helping out at at trail day is the best way to keep the improvements coming and to ensure the trail is in good shape for you and others to ride. Volunteering is at a trail day is a great way to be a part of the small but dedicated team of volunteers who look after the trail. Our next trail day will be posted soon - if you can help out it would be great to see you. Thanks.
02.01.2022 All going well, and if the forecasted rain holds off, the big mower will be working on parts of the trail from sunrise on Wednesday to knock down the tall grass and weeds. The big mower moves quickly and changes direction without warning - the operator will be focused on the mowing and will not be looking out for riders. For your safety and the safety of the operator please respect the Wednesday morning closure. The trail reopens at 12.30pm on Wednesday.... Thank you.
02.01.2022 And here comes the rain. This might be a good weekend for bike maintenance. You probably already worked out the trail would be closed this weekend due to the rain that is already falling and with more forecast on Sunday and Monday. With this rain, and possibly more next week, it is going to take a while until we can reopen the trail. We will inspect the trail once when we feel it is worthwhile but we know it will need at least 3-4 days without rain before the trail will dry ...out (warm temperatures, wind and sunshine also work wonders). Thanks
