25.01.2022 WHAT IS STIMMING? We all have behaviours which help regulate our sensory environment e.g. hair twirling, pen tapping, foot tapping. For people on the autism spectrum, these regulatory behaviours can become repetitive and can be seen as quite unusual movements of the body or sounds. For example: hand-flapping or finger-flicking... Rocking backwards and forwards, while sitting or standing Visual stimulation, looking at something sideways or watching an object spin (e.g. Sarah’s CD) Repetitive door closing and opening, or flicking light switches on and off Chewing or mouthing objects Listening to the same song or noise over and over again.
