25.01.2022 Friendly Voice Overs... Here's some advice. Smile - say cheese... Do you remember the photographer saying that? It might have sounded corny - but it worked. Smile for the camera. Why? Because you always look better when you smile. In fact the best beauty secret is not a cream or lotion - it is a smile. It looks better for a picture and it makes you sound more friendly. When you smile you look more attractive - therefore the audience will enjoy looking at you. They will pay more attention. When you smile you look more friendly thus the audience will warm to you, like you and trust you more. When you smile you look more confident thus the audience will believe you. When you smile at the audience some of your audience will smile back at you and that gives you energy. When you smile it sends endorphins to your brain and that makes you feel good. You frown when you are annoyed, unsure or confused. Is that the message your want your audience to remember? You scowl when you are angry, frightened or ill. Is that the message you want your audience to remember? Your friend smiles at you - your enemy does not. How do you want to be considered? How should you smile? Whatever feels natural for you. Not everyone can comfortably flash a smile of teeth. The best and most sincere smiles include the lips and the eyes. It is really the eyes that say it best. And if you believe that you should not smile when you present - don't be surprised at the cold unsmiling faces staring back at you. As long as you are speaking to people - they will like you, trust you and listen more closely when you smile. Smile - say cheese!

24.01.2022 Another great interview at the June Marquee Lunch with the King of Cabaret Tony Pantano.

23.01.2022 VALE LOU OTTENS Dutch engineer Lou Ottens, who is credited with the invention of the audio cassette tape, has died aged 94. Ottens started working for electronics manufacturer Phillips in 1952, and by 1960 had been promoted to head of product development. It was there, along with his team, that he developed the world’s first portable tape recorder. In 1963, he introduced the first cassette tape at the Berlin Radio Show electronics fair, which superseded the cumbersome reel to reel systems used until that time. The following year, the name ‘Compact Cassette’ was trademarked. RIP Lou.

22.01.2022 I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a much loved radio colleague. Grant Goldman passed away peacefully in Sydney last night following a courageous cancer battle. Grant was the consummate broadcaster spreading his talents broadly across radio, television, commentary, MC work and voice over. We worked together at the Greater 3UZ in the mid 70's. He possessed a quick wit and an amazing ability to engage his audience the minute he switched on the microphone. He created and ran the 'Future School of Radio' in Sydney. We would often compare notes about radio training. He had a true passion for the industry. Joanie and I send sincere condolences to Grant's wife and beautiful family. You will be missed but never forgotten. RIP Goldy

21.01.2022 Tis the season to be jolly.... and that's exactly what the Marquee Lunch bunch did yesterday at the Emerald in South Melbourne. Our final lunch for the year was a Merry Christmas affair... the place was packed. And everyone enjoyed the chatter and the banter with our special guest... the former Masters Apprentice... turned businessman and entrepreneur, Glenn Wheatley, who only yesterday morning, delivered several truck loads of much needed hay and stock feed to the drought effected farmers in and around Tamworth in NSW. Good work Glenn. Thanks for your company. And special thanks to Jeff Joseph for another successful year of Marquee Lunches. Merry Christmas

21.01.2022 Ho Ho Ho, it was the Marquee Christmas lunch today and our last chin-wag get together for 2017. The usual suspects and a few virgin guests tucked into the leg ham with all the trimmings followed by generous serves of Christmas pud. A bit later it was my pleasure to conduct the chrissy fireside chat with our special guest Mark Andrew, arguably Australia's best tribute performer. Mark is a wonderful talent, totally down to earth and a delight to talk to. Thanks Mark. And here's to a life of much love and happiness with your fiance Lisa Curry. Happy Christmas to yooooos all. Let's do it all again next year.

17.01.2022 Back in the day when you were nobody unless your song was heard on the radio, Gary Mac was one of those jocks - you know the ones with the smooth voices and well pronounced vowels. Gary was around in the day when the best music played, and it sure was an exciting time to be a dj. Every artist whether they were national or international was interviewed, and not just the 2 minutes they are afforded these days. And who can forget the bands around the beaches in summer, or the beach girl quests? And I'm sure Gary has many more stories than he told us...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhF1O82MQOI&t=226s

17.01.2022 I am saddened to learn that NANCY WILSON, three time Grammy award-winning jazz singer and actress, has died at age 81. Nancy possessed a beautiful soul. Referring to herself as a "song stylist" she enjoying a career that spanned more than five decades. We had a wonderful fireside chat when she dropped into my morning show on 3UZ in 1987. RIP Sweet Lady.

16.01.2022 Good mates sharing great memories on the Bruce Stewart show at RPP-FM last Monday. Bobby James, Gil Matthews and moi. Photos courtesy Rab Siddhi.

13.01.2022 Some time ago Mitchell Dye did some VO training with me. For a few years now, he's been presenting two 'talk-radio' shows a week on the Geelong based Pulse-FM. Along the way we have dabbled in a couple of projects together. Just this week Mitchell dropped by for a chat in my studio/training space.....

11.01.2022 Back home following two days of directing and recording voice overs with the third year actors at QUT in Brisbane. It is a pleasure to work in such a professional environment. I was impressed with the groups preparedness and their ability to take direction to enable them to find their unique strength in presenting a variety of VO material. Well done guys. Now the post production process begins. A special thank you to my dear mate Lynn Rainbow-Reid for her continued support. And thanks to the QUT Creative Industries team including Mark Radvan and my audio wizards James and Kayne.

08.01.2022 VALE MATTHEW KING This morning Pete Smith emailed me the following... (Thank you Pete) "During the 60’s Jim Berenson was the king of voice-overs on radio and TV. His voice was stamped on so many commercials.... As I recall, when Jim established MAM 'Melbourne Artists Management', later to be headed up by former channel 9 producer Garry Stewart, the go to man for professional voice-overs became Matthew King." Pete also attached a posting by voice over mentor Abbe Holmes. I think Abbe sums it up succinctly what many of us enjoyed when we were booked to perform and work with such a talent as Matthew King. I wanted to share her words with you... "Yesterday morning, March 4th at 10am, we lost the amazingly brilliant, hilarious, exceptionally naughty Matthew King. He was on a road trip with a friend and heading north from his home in Queenscliff to visit his son’s family. He was so looking forward to seeing his granddaughters. He died suddenly in Newcastle. We worked together since the early 80’s in voiceover, animation and silly corporate audio visuals. He was literally the funniest person I’ve ever met. His exceptionally risqué improvised v/o studio sessions are legendary. You had to be there. And I wasand often on the floor aching with mirth. He was a true legend in our world of voiceover and a bloody fine actor to boot. He was a good man. He will be missed. Vale Matty King. RIP."

07.01.2022 Working in the state of the art audio studios at QUT in Brisbane this week, tutoring, recording and crafting the voice over demos for the current 3rd year acting students. The final production of the demos will showcase each actors ability in presenting voice overs for a wide variety of applications. I'll be back in Brissy again at the end of October to introduce the 2nd year actors to the world of voice over. Thank you to all at QUT and my audio specialists Kayne and James.

06.01.2022 VALE JOHN WORTHY I'm saddened to hear of the passing of respected journalist and radio news reader John Worthy. Although John had worked on other Melbourne radio stations, it was at 3AW that he gained great admiration from both his peers and the radio audience alike. He was at AW at it's beginnings of Radio Talk-back. I worked with John on several occasions during my freelance stints at 3AW in the mid 70's. We also did many voice overs together. When John presented the news, his eloquence and rich bass baritone voice commanded your attention. His pronunciation of the English language was exemplary. Goodbye old mate. RIP.

06.01.2022 Back to base last night from Brisbane after mentoring in the' state of the art' recording studios at Queensland University of Technology. It was a pleasure delivering my annual voice over workshop to such a wonderful bunch of creative and talented second year actors. Special thanks go to audio guru Andy Ward whose attention to detail in so many ways was impeccable. And extra thanks to Lynne Rainbow and Dr Mark Radvan. It was a most enjoyable two days.

04.01.2022 Another Sunday breakfast at Pala Cibo in Mornington with a few good mates, Norbert Mancusi, Gary Turner, Gil Matthews and Don Webster.

04.01.2022 A small group of creative radio people and top musicians got together last Saturday (November 24th) for a nosh up and plenty of lively banter. MC Gary Turner welcomed Greg Newman who flew in from Brisbane to celebrate 30 years of producing Australia's longest running radio publication, 'Jocks Journal'. Gil Matthews, Aztec Records, explored the ins and outs of the music industry and Steve Woods talked about his incredible book 'For The Record'. Other luminaries included Jose Auditore, Norbet Mancusi, Ian Stewart, Deborah Turner, Anita Monk, Jacqui and Artie Stevens, Joanie Mac, Phil Andrew and more. We luv yoooos all. (Thanks to Artie Stevens and Gary Turner for some of these pics)

03.01.2022 Each year, I travel to Brisbane as part of the prestigious ‘Artists in Residence’ program at the Queensland University of Technology where I deliver my ‘studio voice over mentoring program’. This intense hands-on workshop gives second year Performing Arts student actors extensive knowledge in every facet of voice over. This video shows the magnificent training facility and Kelvin Grove campus.

02.01.2022 Today is Mike Nicholls birthday. And it's a milestone birthday... one with an "0" on the end. Not that long ago me and Mike were young guns when we joined The Good Guys line up at Melbourne's 3AK. Have a great day mate. Joanie and I will raise a couple to you at happy hour. Luv ya heaps Cyclone Boy. xox

02.01.2022 The July Marquee Entertainment Lunch yesterday was very special. And everyone agreed. Peter Wynne spent the best part of an hour relating rip roaring and witty stories from a life of more than 30 years as executive producer of so many live and pre-recorded TV shows from the halcyon days of Aussie television... Don Lane, Bert Newton, Hey Hey, Logies, AFI's, Ray Martin Specials with Don Bradman, Robin Williams, Madonna, Billy Crystal and so many more. Thank you Peter.
