25.01.2022 We’ve had two shipping containers delivered - one for a workshop and one for us to live in temporarily while we build our house (you can follow our journey @living_in_mud). The original plan when we moved to our new block was that the caravan workshop would be placed parallel to Papa’s shed. The caravan workshop would remain as the office/clean assembly area and all that was in the shed (laser cutter, masking table, acrylic etc.) would be moved into Papas shed. Kel would bui...ld a roof over the caravan that extended out to join the roofline of Papas shed to create an outdoor yet undercover area for him to work in for jobs such as welding etc. New plan. Papas shed is now to become the office AND where the laser cutter will be housed. The shipping container opposite Papas shed will be the new workshop and will be eventually set up with tools and have a clean assembly area. The two shipping containers are parallel with a large space in between them. We’ll put up some kind of roof to go over both shipping containers for an undercover outdoor assembly area for the not so clean jobs. On Thursday Kel drove to Sydney and picked up the new laser cutter from @trotecaustralia. Now we just need power. And a heck of a lot of tools Our to do list feels as long as our arms and it seems to grow every day. Please bear with us as we continue the process of rebuilding. 22.01.2022 On Monday a team from @kerfoot_pty_ltd came down on a reconnaissance mission to see how they could help our local community of Quaama both in the immediate and the in the long term. They brought with them generous donations of wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, gum boots, hoses and more - all things the people are really needing at the moment. Their generosity didn’t stop there. For Kel they brought with them a new Makita combo kit, a brand new IBC tank, and some other useful bits... and pieces. They also came over to our place to see our setup and how they could help with both our business and the building of our house. While they were here they helped Kel set up the new laser cutter, fixed the pull cord on the generator, and even made a cubby for the kids out of the crate the laser cutter came in! All in a few hours. Signs, light box signs, merchandise, other unusual and varied requests from an engraved photo memorial plaque to clear acrylic record player covers.... These are some signs we delivered a few weeks ago for a friend and client as her elderly dad has moved in with the family. 17.01.2022 When the Badja Forest Road fire swept through our little village of Quaama and surrounds, not one of us was exempt. The fires wiped out approximately 1/3 of the houses and so much more. Some lost fences, others their livestock. Some lost sheds, others, like us, lost everything. Some suffered injuries. Some even died. Every single one of us felt the impact and the devastation, yet the community of Quaama has come together like nothing we’ve ever experienced. The Quaama School... of Arts Hall opened its doors and has been receiving donated supplies from all over the state and beyond to support the entire community. All coordinated and run by the locals. Voluntarily. It’s been 27 days since the fire and those who still have houses standing - so many are still without power. @wckitchen bring lunch and dinner Every. Single. Day. For everyone to come and take as they need. Freshly prepared/cooked, nourishing and delicious meals. When we visit the hall, we always bump into someone we know. We greet each other with a hesitant, Did the fires get you? rejoicing with those who have good news and grieving with those who have lost. Those who we’ve already spoken to previously, especially those who have lost everything like us, we ask each other how today is going, and we both smile sadly and nod, giving and receiving the unspoken understanding and support that can only be experienced together. Yesterday as I stood in the main street of Quaama, three huge trucks with hay for livestock lining the street, my heart swelled with emotion at the village we are a part of. 17.01.2022 A week before Christmas, our village school, Quaama Public School, held their much anticipated orchard opening that many students, parents, and people in the community had been involved in bringing about. We attended the presentation as we had been commissioned to create a few things for the orchard including a sign and plaque with all the names of the students involved. It was so heartwarming after the presentation watching all of the students crowd around the plaque, trying... to find their name and whooping in excitement when they found it. That’s the part of the job that makes it meaningful, Kel observed. Then within two weeks the fires came. Early reports indicated that the school had been wiped out. We were devastated. As a small community school, it was likely they wouldn’t rebuild, just send the students to the next closest school. We were also devastated at all the planning, effort and hard work of the brand new orchard, just to be wiped out two weeks after it had opened. However you shouldn’t always believe what you hear - through second hand reports, the media, general hysteria. The school survived. Singed at the edges, however it was saved. 14.01.2022 Three...two...one... *cue the fireworks* ... We’re back up and running baby! Kel has set up the new laser cutter, testing and tweaking, making sure it runs smoothly, efficiently and consistently. We’ve ordered and received (mostly) our raw materials, we’ve revamped our packaging and WE ARE READY!!! It’s been a much longer journey than we anticipated, mostly due to COVID-19 and the delays it has brought, however now we are there. We are so excited to be able to start creating again. It’s been a huge amount of hard work and also a huge amount of support and generosity that has finally gotten us to where we are today. We definitely couldn’t have done it without all those who’ve helped us along the way. We still have so much that we want to do to make the business bigger and better. Today though, we celebrate. 11.01.2022 You shall not PASS! This is how we imagine Laura’s grandfather, Papa, as if he was standing before his small shed as the fire swept through our block in Quaama. Early last year Papa felt his time was drawing to an end. Knowing when he passed, the fibro house he’d built himself when he first got married in the 1950s, would most likely be flattened by whomever bought his property located in the Upper North Shore of Sydney, he asked if Kel wanted his back shed. It could easily... be dismantled and rebuilt. Kel was very grateful - it would be perfect as his new workshop when we’d built our house and moved onto our block. Up we went to Sydney. Kel dismantled the shed, brought it back to Quaama and with some minor modifications, an extension, and help from his Dad, his new workshop was up. We even posted about it on Instagram. In November, Papa passed away. When we were given the early reports of the devastation the bushfire had wreaked, Laura remembers thinking, What was the point of Papa’s generosity and the blessing of his shed, all that effort of Kel dismantling and building it, just for it to be burned before we even had a chance to use it? In that moment she knew it was still there. And here it is. Alongside Laura’s old Mirage, our small boat with a motor full of fuel - completely untouched by the fires. It’s a complete miracle. It was also a great encouragement, that despite all that we had lost, the workshop that had been set aside for the future was still standing. 11.01.2022 When your product survives a bushfire you know it’s This personalised memorial plaque was made in memory of Kel’s Nanna who passed away exactly a year ago on New Year’s Eve (31/12/2018). In all the whirlwind of devastation, the first anniversary of her death was forgotten - until we went back and saw the plaque and remembered. What a day New Year’s Eve will be in the future for our family While we grieve both the memory of Nanna (she really was the sweetest, just like you ...imagine sweet Nannas to be) and the loss of so much, we are overwhelmed by your generosity and support in helping our business get back up on its feet. 11.01.2022 What a strange era we find ourselves in! Although we’ve been quiet on our Instagram feed, we’ve not been idle as we continue to set up our new workspace. The lockdown we find ourselves in simply means we have thrown ourselves more into the rebuild of our business and our house. We’re also greatly encouraged to see so many businesses both locally and globally innovating their systems and coming up with ways to keep both their livelihoods ticking over and customers able to con...tinue supporting them (it’s definitely not hard to support so many local eateries when they post pictures of such delicious offerings!) Where are we at? Our new laser cutter is still in the process of being set up and we still need a power connection before we can be fully operational. Due to electricians being in high demand, we're still waiting for this to happen! Originally we had hoped to be back up and running by March/April however due to the COVID-19 situation, this has delayed us. 05.01.2022 This is Sam, AKA Fireman Sam, Manager/Coffee Roaster for @alfrescocoffeeroasters and Fire Fighter for Moruya Fire Brigade. Sam and Troy from @alfrescocoffeeroasters have been supporting @gaslitedesign from day one. Commissioning us for signage and merchandise from the get go, promoting us, referring us to others and constantly having our backs. Sam has been on multiple task forces fighting the bushfires since November 2019, when he was first deployed to the Braidwood bushfir...es. When the Badja Forest Road bushfire was engulfing the Bega Valley in the early morning of New Year’s Eve, Sam was in the midst of the Clyde Mountain bushfire in Mogo, near Bateman’s Bay. Kel remembers Sam calling him soon after, supporting Kel as Kel shared our devastation and Sam relating his experience of being overrun at Mogo. What goes through your head when a fire storm is approaching you and you can’t escape? In the moment you’re too busy to think or even feel fear. You are running on adrenaline and that is what gets you through. It’s only afterwards that it really hits you. When I was at Mogo and we were being overrun, all I remember is thinking, ‘I don’t like this, we shouldn’t be here, we shouldn’t be here.’ Since November, Sam’s been juggling back to back shifts on the fireground, coming home to roast coffee and then back out again. Plus with the bushfire crisis @alfrescocoffeeroasters has suffered loss of trade just like so many other businesses. 04.01.2022 In the early morning of New Year's Eve, a firestorm swept through our village of Quaama destroying our house, all of our possessions, all of the equipment for Gaslite Design, building materials for our new house, as well Laura's place of work burnt down too. As you can imagine, we are completely devastated. At the same time we are also overwhelmed by the support and generosity of family and friends wanting to help us through this time and start the process of rebuilding our ...lives. What does this mean for Gaslite Design moving forward? Well thankfully Kel had his laptop with him so while we can't physically produce a product at the present time, we can still design, quote and take pre orders. We hope to be fully operational by March/April. The best way you can support us during this time is to continue to buy through us and use our services - if you don't need anything urgently. 01.01.2022 Let there be light Two weeks ago, a team from @kerfoot_pty_ltd came down to wire up the place. They had planned on coming down soon after their initial visit however with all the restrictions put in place, it wasn’t until they had been lifted that they could come. ... Now we have lights and power points in the office, both shipping containers and the outdoor undercover workshop. What a difference it has made! One of the guys joked that now Kel could work 24/7. However he wasn’t far from the truth We are so grateful for the team and their time and the effort they put in to make our situation just that little bit easier. We are so blessed to be on the receiving end of the commitment @kerfoot_pty_ltd made to the bushfire recovery.
