11.01.2022 A very happy Easter to all our friends - near and afar!

11.01.2022 Gawler Freemasons are saddened that The Bunyip, Gawler newspaper, has shut down for the time being. In the latest and last edition they explain the reasons for this, much of it revolving around the COVID-19 pandemic. Many may not be aware that the Lodge of Fidelity has a historic connection with The Bunyip going right back to the newspaper's foundation in 1863 as the journal of the Humbug Society. Both the founder and printer of The Bunyip, William Barnet and the first edito...r Dr George Nott were members of the Lodge of Fidelity and the Humbug Society. The Humbug Society itself was established with the aim of satirising the many fraternal and friendly societies that abounded in Gawler at the time, particularly the Freemasons and Oddfellows, who tended to be somewhat pompous. It goes to show that even back then people had the ability to laugh at themselves, perhaps a lesson we all need to keep in mind today! We sincerely hope that the closure of The Bunyip is only temporary and that we will see it eventually return with renewed vigour. In the meantime we thank the editors and journalists at The Bunyip for their support over the years by running stories on the Gawler Freemasons, and we wish them all well for the future.
