24.01.2022 I’m delighted to announce that 28 kindergarten services across Warrnambool City Council, Colac Otway Shire Council, Corangamite Shire Council, Moyne Shire Council, Glenelg Shire Council and Golden Plains Shire Council areas will receive funding to purchase essential IT equipment to support and improve their learning environment. Through the Building Blocks IT grants program, we’re providing kindergartens across Victoria with the latest technology including laptops, iPads to s...mart TVs to help give children the skills they need, and to assist providers with service administration. With many kindergartens delivering a learning from home program during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has never been a more important time to ensure our early childhood services are equipped with the latest technology devices, especially as we roll-out funded universal Three-Year-Old Kindergarten. 22.01.2022 The coronavirus pandemic has meant that too many apprentices and trainees have found themselves out of work. Earlier this year, I announced support for retrenched apprentices and trainees to get back into work. This included setting up a register for apprentices and trainees to find a new employer. Over 400 apprentices and trainees have registered since being set up. More than 30 have been placed with a new employer. Close to 300 are in training. ... It was great to meet Kristy and Laura recently who both have found new employment through the register. Kristy is doing a joinery apprenticeship at JPH Joinery Geelong and Laura is doing a business traineeship at Westvic Staffing Solutions Ballarat. And for both of them, getting the support to get back into work has meant a lot. That’s why I have extended funding for the program into next year. Because we need apprentices and trainees ready to play a critical role in the economic recovery.

21.01.2022 The Bakery Training Centre at Federation University Australia is seriously impressive. The TAFE received $840k in funding fo develop a high quality training facility for Ballarat residents. The equipment is world class. And don’t worry, students still learn the important hands-on and theoretical components.... There are now over 100 students enrolled in the Baking and Bread Baking courses. And for local industry, they know that the students at Federation TAFE receive top notch training.

16.01.2022 What makes us different also makes us special. That’s why I was so proud to officially launch the GOTAFE Social Justice Charter while I was in Shepparton. It’s not just words on a piece of paper - GOTAFE is already flying rainbow flags across its campuses, has started an Indigenous advisory group and will also implement other great strategies in celebration of its community.

14.01.2022 Last week we announced the safe and steady resumption of elective surgery in Victoria. In Regional Victoria, we will see a staged resumption with activity increasing up to 75% immediately, and then to 85% from 28 September. The state will move to 100% of its usual activity as we approach COVID Normal.... This is great news for the many people who have had to postpone or reschedule a procedure with those most in need to be prioritised.

13.01.2022 Shona McGuigan is Victoria’s 2020 Apprentice of the Year. She grew up on a farm in Mortlake and knew she wanted a career that required hands on skills. Some people tried to talk her out of doing plumbing but Shona followed her interests and did it anyway.... And now she is working at Cri-Tech plumbing in Warrnambool. Her employer has nothing but great things to say about Shona’s work. Meeting her today, I know why. Shona is driven and passionate about the industry. Both she and her employer are rapt with the training provided at South West TAFE. We need more Victorians doing trades as we move into the economic recovery. And as Shona shows, trades open the door to outstanding career opportunities.

12.01.2022 Fantastic news! School camps are set to return in Term 4 for schools in regional Victoria! We know school camps provide important learning opportunities for students, including teamwork, resilience and confidence-building key tools in supporting youth mental health. They also provide a much-needed boost for school camp programs and accommodation providers across our regions.... Camps will be limited to single schools and can only take place in regional Victoria by regional schools, in line with health advice. This is a great outcome for students, regional Victoria and all the industries that benefit from school camps.

11.01.2022 Great news for sessional kindergartens in Western Victoria! Sessional kinder will remain free for most families in Term 4, thanks to a $26.7 million funding boost to support early childhood services, families and children starting Prep in 2021. The funding will support children as they prepare to make the important transition to school, by providing:... Additional kindergarten hours to help vulnerable children catch up on missed or disrupted learning before starting school Reciprocal visits between early childhood and school teachers Best practice tools for Prep teachers to support play-based and differentiated learning for children at the start of 2021 Outreach supports for Aboriginal and cultural and linguistically diverse communities Additional hours for kindergarten teachers to liaise with schools to support children with disabilities in their transition next year. Under the Victorian Government’s roadmap to reopening, child care services will be open for all children from 28 September and sessional kindergarten services will be open from 5 October.

11.01.2022 Sheep shearing is such an important industry to our state. We are working closely with training providers and industry to make training more relevant and valuable to the next generation. It’s why as part of a $1.2 million investment in shearing training, we’ve funded a new shearing app to compliment the hands on learning.... The program uses virtual reality and videos to support students develop their technique. It was great to check out this new training tool in Cavendish and to meet students who are benefiting from it. There are now 150 students enrolled in the funded shearing qualification. And they will make an important contribution to Victoria’s economy in a job that they love.

11.01.2022 Construction has only just started at The Gordon but I can already tell this will be a really exciting culinary precinct for the Geelong region. I can’t wait to return next year to try the creations of Victoria’s next generation of food and hospitality professionals. Thanks to Christine Couzens MP for visiting with me this morning.

10.01.2022 Free TAFE is changing lives and getting Victorians into jobs. Today I met Laura an electrical apprentice who kicked off her career with Free TAFE. Laura topped the class in her Electrotechnology pre-apprenticeship Free TAFE course. ... And now she is working at the Ballarat Goldmine. The whole point of Free TAFE was to break down barriers and get Victorians skilled up in areas of high job demand. And Laura is yet another demonstration that it is working. That's why we are funding an extra 10,000 Free TAFE places as we recover from the pandemic. For students. For industry. And for our economy.

07.01.2022 Here’s a little sneak peek at the upgrade happening at Brauer College in Warrnambool. This $4.4 million project is delivering a refurbished administration building with a new entry space and some refurbishments for the E and C Wings too. As the school is in regional Victoria, construction is being carried out under Stage 3 guidelines to ensure the health and safety of staff and students, along with the team working at the site.... I can’t wait to check out the new facilities once they’re complete. To learn more about the project visit: https://go.vic.gov.au/qBs7lh

06.01.2022 Congratulations to the winner of Australia’s Large Training Provider of the Year award, South West TAFE. Anybody who has visited South West TAFE would know why they have won this award. Whether it be their outstanding industry links to align courses to the needs of the local economy. ... Or the high quality teaching they provide such as teaching building and construction students to build a house. Not to mention the support services they make sure students have from start to finish. This award is a testament to the dedication of all of the staff at South West TAFE. I visited last week to deliver their Victorian Training Award. And in doing so, I got to meet building and construction students and see the house they are working on. Now the national award is the icing on the cake.

05.01.2022 All across the state, we have seen how Free TAFE changes lives. Lives like Carolyn's. Carolyn is absolutely living proof that a new career path is possible. ... Having spent most of her working life in administration, Free TAFE allowed her to overcome barriers and retrain in aged care at TAFE Gippsland. Now Carolyn is working at Traralgon Aged Care. As Carolyn said, it would have taken her two years to save up to pay for the course if it wasn't available through Free TAFE. Today's budget includes an additional $1 billion investment in Victoria's TAFE and training system. This includes an extra 60,000 Free TAFE places - in courses such as building and construction, nursing and agriculture. And extra places for those who have lost their job during the pandemic to retrain. Because we need more skilled workers to for the jobs being created in the economic recovery.

05.01.2022 More on Laura's journey through Free TAFE into a job.
