19.01.2022 Costa joins Luke and the talented team at BOWER Reuse & Repair Centre to learn about repairing and caring for tools at their Repair Cafe. We are looking forward to the day when we establish a place to call home and build a centre like this for all the community to enjoy.

19.01.2022 Earth Overshoot Day: the point at which human consumption exceeds the amount nature can regenerate in a year, has moved back by over three weeks from 29 July in 2019 to 22 August this year. Covid-19 led to a 9.3% reduction in humanity’s ecological footprint compared with same period last year. Despite this good news, in order to keep consuming ecological resources at our current rate we would still need the equivalent of 1.6 Earths as a global average. Unfortunately Austral...ian’s have the highest consumption per capita in the world and if everyone on earth lived like we do in Australia we would need 4.3 Earths to sustain us. A big part of this is due to our heavy reliance on fossil fuels, however this is changing. Another way to lessen our carbon footprint is to utilise sharing platforms and reduce the consumption of raw materials and all of the embodied energy that goes into manufacture and distribution. This is one of our aims in establishing the GC Tool Library. https://www.theguardian.com//human-consumption-of-the-eart If you would like to know more about Earth Overshoot Day https://www.overshootday.org/

17.01.2022 A big congratulations to Sabrina and the team effort at Brisbane Tool Library for winning the Create Change Award at the 7 News Young Achiever Awards last night in Brisbane. Wonderful to see her hard work rewarded and to have the tool library sharing platform model publicly recognised.

15.01.2022 Calling all sewing enthusiasts. We would like to offer as part of our zero waste party inventory, fun and colourful fabric bunting like these pictured from Borrow and Share Bunting Library We think they look great and would make a fun addition to the library. Would you like to help us make them by sewing some triangles at home? We have some fabric already and now we need people who have some time to get productive on their sewing machine. Leave us a ...comment or send us a PM please if you’re interested. We can supply you with a size template and some fabric, or if you have some suitable fabric to donate, we would love to have that too. As you can see from the photos bright colours look good but they have also got very clever with colour themes as well as character themes for kids parties etc. One of our keen volunteers Stephanie has made a start on some samples and varieties of styles, now we need some helpers please to sew up a hundred or so. Thank you, David

15.01.2022 Look at these two awesome donations that came in today An Oztrail quickfold camp stretcher and a self inflating super comfy camp mat. It feels like Xmas when we get new goodies. A big thank you to Micky for not only donating these two beauties but for also driving out of her way to drop them off.

13.01.2022 It’s all happening at the Repair Cafe event this morning at Gecko Hall beside Currumbin Creek. We are here until 1pm and you’re welcome to drop in with your household item needing repair or just to see what we do. We have had some great Repair successes as well as a few items too far gone or in need of some specialist attention that we couldn’t fix, but at least we tried and a few new learnings occurred. Thank you to everyone who has visited us so far today and a big thanks to Dr Helena Popovic for officially opening our inaugural event with a great talk about the benefits of repair and bringing community together.

12.01.2022 We have a couple of spots still available for the volunteer working bee this Sunday morning. Easy tasks with a friendly team photographing tools and uploading them to the online inventory. Come and join us Details in original post.

12.01.2022 Volunteer opportunity this weekend 22nd/23rd to help build the online inventory. Come and meet some friendly people and help us get ready to launch. What will be doing? Photographing tools and uploading images and details to the online inventory. Sorting and cleaning tools and donated equipment.... Engraving identity markers into the tools. We have a sandwich board that needs some simple modifications and painting as a chalk board if anyone is keen. Timing is flexible dependent on peoples availability and we can decide on either Saturday or Sunday, 9am to 12pm, or 1pm to 4pm either day so let me know if you're keen to join us and what time suits you. Location: Molendinar Thank you David and the GCTL Team

12.01.2022 We are co-hosting this webinar with world leading speakers from Griffith University's Climate Action Beacon Team and Gold Coast Climate Action Network. The event is Gold Coast focused and looks at how the University team and the wider community can collaborate more on climate change action. If you have heard Prof Brendan Mackey speak before you will know him as a world expert in these topics and the rest of the lineup are brimming with knowledge and expertise. Register for your free ticket for Tuesday evening via the Zoom link in the event description, and if you want to know more about the Beacon team you can read about their work here. https://www.griffith.edu.au/research/climate-action

11.01.2022 Thank you Rosalinde for your donation of this bread maker for the library inventory We gave it a test run and it turns out an excellent loaf. I have a feeling the volunteers will be using it to make lunch when not out on loan

11.01.2022 Call out for donations to help build the tool library inventory. At the Repair Cafe this Saturday 15th we are gladly accepting donations of suitable items. Pictured here are some of the great items donated by the community so far and will soon be available to borrow by library members. Items need to be in good working order, clean and safe. If you would like to know more about what we can and can’t accept you can read about it on our website. https://toollibrary.org.au/dona...te-items/ For details about the Repair Cafe event at Gecko Hall in Currumbin this Saturday head to our FB events tab.

10.01.2022 We are looking for a space to call home. Can you help? Do you know someone who might? Please share the word and help us find a space similar to this one. Our volunteers have been working hard in the background and we are getting close to being able to open our doors and invite you to join us. But first we need some doors to open. We are looking for a space to call home, to start we need a minimum of around 20 square meters however bigger would be better. There are a few must... haves that we need: Lockable and secure. Street level with parking close by. 240V power and lighting. Safe for when our mostly female volunteer team are locking up in the dark. Located somewhere between Bundall to Burleigh and potentially out to Robina. Once established we will look at branches in the northern and western suburbs. Peppercorn lease. Access to toilets and water for our volunteers. We are also keen to potentially co share with other community groups as we will only be using the space at first on a Saturday morning and then as we grow, one, then two afternoon/evenings per week. Other tool libraries have established in a spare storage shed at a bowling club or in a storage room beneath a sporting club grand stand. Others have the support of a philanthropic business using part of their commercial space. We play nicely with others and we are rather handy to have around as we have lots of tools. We are currently speaking with a number of Councillors and departments within Council, however there are far more community groups seeking space than spaces available. We have spoken with the Council libraries team and no joy there at this time. Numerous people have suggested Men's Sheds and whilst some like Nerang Men's Shed have been very supportive with donations of tools and help fixing items, they are all tight on room themselves. Also Men's Sheds are a men's mental health space and whilst a couple do accommodate women at times, we have a very strong female following (over 75% on this FB page) and need a space that is inclusive of everyone at all times. If you can help with an introduction to someone in your network you feel may be able to assist us, we would greatly appreciate your assistance. Please contact David Paynter M: 0404833741 E: [email protected] Thank you everyone for your ongoing support. Pictured here is the NE Seattle Tool Library as an example of what we aim to create here for all of us to share and enjoy.

06.01.2022 New goodies for the library inventory. A huge thank you to Stu for donating a host of items including these routers and a super handy multi function tool that has more bits and options than you can count. Stu also donated some gardening tools, saws and a whipper snipper which are all well cared for and in great condition. Stu and his wife are downsizing from an acreage home to a unit and we really appreciate their contribution as they minimize their belongings, plus he can always come and borrow them back if he needs them. We also hope that once Stu is settled into his new home he will come and visit us and get involved as a volunteer, as he is a man with a lifetime of practical hands on engineering knowledge and you are hard pressed to find people these days who can turn their hand to practically anything like Stu can.

04.01.2022 We had an inspiring visit and great Makerspace discussion this morning at the Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise Wheelchair Aid Project. The Rotary team use donated bicycles to make off road wheelchairs for developing countries and the shed was a hive of activity today. One of our GCTL goals is to see a Makerspace on the GC. Blake from the newly forming Rotaract Club of Gold Coast Makers is in the early stages of looking to bring such a project to life and we are keen to help. With Rotaract now open to all ages, (even aging blokes like me) they are looking to hear from anyone who would be interested in getting on board as the foundation team to develop a Makerspace for the Gold Coast. If you are interested send me a message and I will put you in touch with Blake.

02.01.2022 ABC writer Patrick Wright on the benefits of sharing platforms, - for which we are obviously a big believer. The GCTL gets a mention along with Eli from ShareWaste which is an awesome Aussie creation connecting people with food and organics waste who have nowhere to compost, with people in their neighbourhood who have compost bins, worm farms or chickens.
