24.01.2022 Over the past few months GCC and GEBIE GANG have collaborated with GTNT, CDU and ALC Learning on Groote (LOG) to deliver a Cert ll in Construction Pathways. Yesterday was day one of the Cert ll training. It was great to see everyone so engaged and eager to learn. Huge thank you to Fabian Lalara who assisted with translating the information into Anindilyakwa so everyone could clearly understand the content and instructions. 23.01.2022 Colours of Groote Eylandt Today the CDP Umbakumba ladies coloured the leaves of pandanus using natural dyes made from the roots, leaves and flowers of plants found on Groote. 23.01.2022 GEBIE GANG are getting ready for their men’s camp in a few weeks time This week the guys have been making fishing spears. The spears will be used by the young men to go hunting for bush tucker whilst out on country for the camp. During the camp, there will also be a challenge where participants will have to make a spear exactly like their elders did back in the day, with no modern day tools or glue. 22.01.2022 Position Vacancy Angurugu Activity Supervisor (Female) Full Time Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island Enterprises (GEBIE) operates a Community Development Programme (CDP) in the Communities of Angurugu, Umbakumba and Milyakburra and at a number of outstations in the Groote Archipelago. CDP supports job seekers to build skills, address barriers and contribute to their communities through a range of flexible activities.... The Activity Supervisor is responsible for engaging job seekers in meaningful Work for the Dole (WfD) activities and assisting them to build their capacity and skills for future employment opportunities. Wherever possible, activities will closely relate to career pathways documented in the job seekers’ job plan. This can include anything from traditional dying and weaving, sewing, jewelry making, mosaics, mentoring through training, literacy and numeracy support and on-country trips to reconnect with culture and the land. This will be achieved by: - Supervising, training and guiding job seekers in safe work-like environments; - Supporting the development of employable skills, such as workplace communication; and - Assisting with the completion of reports, inclusive of job seeker attendance records. To be considered for this position you will need: ESSENTIAL - Current Drivers Licence; - Good communication skills including negotiation, advocacy, and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to quickly create rapport; - Strong supervision and mentoring skills and the ability to assess the personal and situational needs of job seekers; - Administration skills and computer literacy; and - Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary Australian society. DESIRABLE - Experience working within an Indigenous not for profit organisation; - Creative flare, with a passion to think outside the box and utilise natural resources in activities and projects; - End-to-end project management skills inclusive of understanding the lifecycle of projects; and - Current knowledge or ability to gain knowledge of labour market conditions/opportunities across the service delivery region. A comprehensive remuneration package is offered. Salary will be negotiated based on the skills and experience of the successful candidate. 20.01.2022 What a week! CDP participants have been out on country collecting Mangkurrkwa (Pandanus) nuts as part of our community seed collecting activity. The nuts are then weighed and handed over to @south_32 GEMCO to support their Mine Rehabilitation Program. The collaboration provides CDP participants a unique opportunity to engage whilst learning new job skills and native plant knowledge. Working side by side with GEMCO RMSL employees, CDP participants involved in this program are gaining skills which will prepare them for the workforce. Keen to get involved? 17.01.2022 Clean Up Groote Eylandt Day 2020 was a great success! It was great to see 105 people out on 8 Mile Beach collecting marine debris. The ALC Rangers and ladies f...rom the Anindilyakwa Art Centre sorted through the debris yesterday and recorded: - 4673 plastic bottle tops - 2759 plastic bottles - 883 thongs (406 left, 397 right + spare parts) - 527 plastic cigarette lighters - 405 floats - 251 squid jigs - 119 glass bottles - 118 tooth brushes - 55 rolls of tape - 47 metal containers/gas bottles - 4 ute loads of ghost nets and rope The plastic based products are then recycled where possible through East Arnhem Regional Council’s recycling program, and up-cycled by the Anindilyakwa Arts who turn them into all sorts of amazing installations, including Macie Lalara’s monster fish (fish made of marine debris) which is touring Australia as we speak. 06.01.2022 This week GEBIE GANG headed out on country for a 5 day camp at the beautiful Red Sands area with 12 young men, Russ and Jesso. The boys have done plenty of hunting, catching fresh fish, crays and turtles to be shared around the fire at night Some highlights to date include 6 on 6 beach soccer on the waters edge and sitting around the camp fire at night discussing life as a young person in community, whilst playing the game of ‘riddle’ and sipping on cups of tea. GCC and A...LC Music and Media joined the camp for a few nights during the week and the boys had a surprise visit from Freda and Abel which was really nice. It's been a blast of a week and we couldn't be more proud of what these young men have achieved.
