25.01.2022 Time for a history lesson...... Did you know that netball (or women's basketball as it was known until 1970) has been played in Geelong since around 1919? The game was first introduced here by the English girls who were brought out to work in the many woollen mills located around the region. The Mill Managers prepared a court at the mills to give the girls some form of exercise and social engagement. From 1919 to 1924 it was a social activity but became so popular that a c...ompetition between the mills was introduced. This was organised by the Geelong Girls Unity Club (under the banner of The Band of Hope) so in 1924 the forerunner of GCNA was formed. By the mid 1930's gravel courts were constructed in Kardinia Park near the current Elderly Citizens building (Moorabool Street) and the sport has flourished ever since. The 2 photos attached are from 1924 and 1925. In these challenging times why don't you ask your family and friends when they first started playing netball. Ask your Mum, your Aunt, your grandmother or your best friend. Most females in Geelong have played netball at Kardinia Park at some stage in their life. As we head towards 100 years of netball in Geelong in 2024 look out for any old photos as we'd love to have a copy of them. Stay well, remember all the hygiene guidelines and stay connected. There are lots of stories out there to be told!
25.01.2022 And the great news keeps coming in! Lucy Mawson is in the last 26 players in the Victorian 15/under State team. This is an awesome achievement as Lucy is a bottom age player and can still qualify for next year too! Well done Lucy you are another superstar who is following your own Netball dream.
25.01.2022 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, so it's more important than ever for us all to stay connected and support those around us. This year's campaign m...essage is 'there's more to say after R U OK?'. You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which could change their life. So take a moment to check in with those around you and ask.... R U OK?#leisurenetworks #ruokday See more
23.01.2022 During this years 16 Days of Activism, the Geelong Central Netball Association will be acknowledging and celebrating our amazing women and girls who contribute so much to our wonderful sport. Sport plays a unique and critical role in bringing communities together, enhancing social cohesion and driving positive social change. While we are working to create opportunities for all Victorians to achieve their full potential both on and off the sporting arena, there are still barri...ers that impact us from achieving a level playing field for all. We as an association are committed to breaking down any barriers that exist to limit the growth and development of women and girls in sport. This is our GCNA Committee and we want to celebrate their contribution because they strive to provide a fun and positive environment for all participants.
20.01.2022 A message from Netball Victoria Hello Everyone, Just a follow up regarding our Goodwill Membership Reimbursement Policy last week. Thank you to the 55 Associations that have signed up to the Affiliate Pledge. We have also received a good level of support from members pledging their membership. These actions will definitely support the community back to netball.... We have a few quick points regarding the reimbursement process to date. It would be great if could share these points with your members to make sure the process is efficient and working for everyone. Members, please make sure you are entering the correct information in the application form. Netball Victoria are receiving applications with incorrect information, including bank account details which makes it impossible for them to process the reimbursement. The team at Netball Victoria are reviewing application requests as they come in. They have found that some members are requesting a full refund when they have played a fixtured match in 2020. They will continue to review this information and members will be informed that their application will be adjusted to a partial reimbursement. Netball Victoria understand that there are a few members that may not have received the initial reimbursement email. To begin with, members should check their spam or junk mail folders. Please let us know if you have not received the email. Please note that only one reimbursement application needs to be submitted for each member. There is a frequently asked questions section on the website https://vic.netball.com.au/reimbursements
20.01.2022 In the 1920's & 30's games consisted of 6 rounds of 7 minutes each. The court was marked out slightly differently as per attached diagram. The umpire bounced the ball between 2 centre court players. A player must release the ball within 3 seconds but goalers had 5 seconds. The defender could not move or interfere with the shot and if it was a penalty shot then no other player could stand in the goal circle. If the shot was missed the ball was taken by the opposition a...s a throw in....no rebounds allowed! For a throw in the opponent stands off the court beside the thrower. All other players must stand 9 feet away from the player throwing in. There was 1 umpire, a timekeeper, scorer and a linesman for each game. Up until the late 1950's the game was played in silence with only the Captain allowed to direct play. And positional bibs weren't introduced until the 1970's. How the game has changed! Stay well, observe all the hygiene guidelines and social distancing and hopefully we are all back playing netball at Kardinia Park very soon.

13.01.2022 Netball is back......well almost! We plan to begin on October 12 and run until December 14. That will mean 10 weeks of netball (including the Monday night before Melbourne Cup if we can). The COVID-19 restrictions will still be in place for everyone but this time we need to wear a mask. In these challenging times we may need to be a little bit more flexible and just enjoy the fact that the kids are able to play netball again this year. We are planning some fun activiti...es along the way. All teams will need to confirm if they will be joining us again so please let Fiona know asap. More info to follow soon. Stay safe, follow the COVID-19 guidelines and we hope to see you all back at Kardinia Park on October 12
