22.01.2022 Last year, you helped us raise $85,000 to support the installation of a new state-of-the-art ERCO lighting system in three of our galleries. This upgrade has greatly improved our capacity to deliver ever more ambitious and sophisticated exhibitions. So, thank you! Today, we’re launching the next, and final, stage of our ‘Turn the lights back on’ campaign. We’re now seeking your support to help raise $70,000 to upgrade the lighting in both the historic Hitchcock Gallery (the ...major space closest to Johnstone Park) and the McPhillimy Gallery (the space directly adjoining the Foyer entrance). Installed several decades ago, the system in these two galleries is outdated and long overdue for 21st century illumination! Can you continue to help us ‘Turn the lights back on’ to present our ongoing collections and exhibitions program in the very best light? 09.01.2022 We are delighted to announce the acquisition of Rachel Hine’s ‘Not the voice of a bird’ 2020 from Boom Gallery’s recent exhibition. Rachel Hine is a Geelong-based artist who uses the ancient medium of tapestry to depict both real and fictional characters in contemporary, dreamlike contexts. Taking inspiration from portraiture, fashion illustration and storytelling, the scenes Hine weaves are intricately constructed and prompt their audiences to consider the very act of loo...king from multiple perspectives. ‘Not the voice of a bird’ evokes the chaos and mystery of the Australian bush. An enigmatic woman hovers within a darkened landscape teeming with shadows, plant life and moonlit mist, with the whimsical floral patterning that adorns her cloak representing a contemporary interpretation of the brocades and symbolic embellishments found in Medieval tapestries and costumes. 01.01.2022 After successfully fundraising, the Gallery opened the HP Douglass Memorial Gallery in 1928. The new space was an ideal setting to exhibit a larger selection of the Gallery’s collection, which had quickly outgrown its previous location in the GM Hitchcock Memorial Art Gallery. Currently, the HP Douglass Memorial Gallery space has been transformed for ‘RONE in Geelong’. We’re sure Douglass himself would have never expected such an immersive contemporary art experience to occupy the gallery bearing his name.
