23.01.2022 "1 out of 4 players think that hockey adds colour to their life - the other 3 are too busy playing to worry about it"

22.01.2022 While some of us are enjoying a day off, or eating chocolate, or reflecting on an event that took place some 2000 years ago, spare a moment for those hard-worki...ng, never say die, Geelong hockey players and friends, spilling blood, sweat & tears in the name of hockey this weekend! WE SALUTE YOU!! (They have to eat, right?) GO TEAM!! See more

19.01.2022 Should we Photoshop worn out hockey pants worn by our Marquee players? (Just asking!)

18.01.2022 Our hockey family deserves the unabridged version! It's not like there's much on, after you've walked the dog...twice. If you are wondering what might happen ...after 1st of June, or after 21st of June, there are TWO BIG ISSUES, which means that it’s unclear what will happen then, at the moment. For our hockey friends & families, it means that there is no possibility of games, in the foreseeable future, and that training would be limited 10 people (it's NOT 20 for group activities). For our general skaters, opening up for groups of up to 20 per enclosed space may not be viable, unless we charge everyone (including spectators) very high per-person prices, and we would damage our reputation and likely not get many people anyway. So, the issues are (1) economies of scale. What’s that? If we have lots of people, everyone pays a bit, and big costs can be spread around, and things are affordable for everyone. Over winter, we can often have 300-500 people in one day. If we only have 2 or 3 groups of 20 in one day, it’s going to cost more to disinfect the place, and cover our opening costs, than the combined cost of 60 people paying double the price. Really? Yes! (Sad, but true.) And for issue (2) we have cross-subsidies, maintenance, and what people expect. If you have stopped reading, we understand, but if not, you should know resources are what drives things, along with the usual supply/demand pressures. People want to have fun (as do we ) and we do not like bringing up $$$ issues, but even fun has a cost, usually. We like to offer our hockey people fun, and let them turn-up, play, and go home in a simple and easy way. We feel the same way about our birthday party people, our groups, about everyone, really. The nasty punch-line is that it averages out at over $200 per hour to run the centre, even before any profit is made. Many of our activities yield a lot less than that, and almost all activities (most years) yield less than that between November and March. Hockey for example, despite having Australia & New Zealand’s biggest regular competition, even when we have tournaments, doesn’t get close. For years we have cross-subsidised our quiet times, our special events, and many activities, so that we could offer something all-year-round, and to as many people as possible. This year was looking great, but we are now likely to lose 2/3 of our income or more. BTW, we are not trying to sell you anything ATM, so this IS NOT an excuse to say, well, given the hard times, if you want to skate or play hockey, you’ll have to pay $50 per hour and you’ll need 10 or 20 friends. What we are saying is that we would lose more by opening than by staying closed. If you know us, you will surely know that we want to be open, to be skating, hosting activities, and playing hockey with our friends, so if we tell you it’s currently too expensive to open FOR US, we hope you believe us. We will have a special "conspiracy theory" mailbox open soon! We don’t have very deep pockets, but we are currently doing some renovations, maintenance, reorganising, and hopefully making the place better for your return. At the same time, we are modifying the operation with suitable infection control and spacing/distancing practices. Until that is finished (for reasons related to packing up and setting up multiple times each day) we cannot have any private or semi-private functions, or activities. The small amount of available rink time has to be devoted to staff, instructor, referee, and coach training, so we are deeply sorry about that for our general skating and hockey patrons. We hope that in a few weeks, when we can have 50-100 people per session, and some game worthy interaction for our hockey players, we can have you all back...in reasonable sized groups. Thanks for your patience.

18.01.2022 Glad they're "caged" - I think they bite!

17.01.2022 HOCKEY HOCKEY HOCKEY Oi! Oi! Oi! Well, hasn’t the Universe changed in the last 3 months!? Excited to get back to hockey?! From Monday, 13 July, we will have 2 weeks of scrimmages (informal practice games) followed by a week of long-overdue Grand Finals. Please help us help you; our resources are really stretched, so please read and act on the following: * You will need to pre-purchase tickets to participate * Try to scrimmage with your teammates (optional) * You may buy tickets to consecutive practices - don’t be too greedy * Provided it’s at a similar level, you may attend another night’s practice e.g. Mon & Tue Soft Puck, or Tue & Thu Peewees * Read the procedures here: https://www.rollerway.com.au/inline-hockey * Buy your tickets here: https://bookwhen.com/rhl Hope you all have fun getting fit again, where applicable PLEASE bear with us, as there is much going on behind the scenes

16.01.2022 Every one of our hockey kids has a world champion inside them! We do what we can to help that side come out, and still keep it fun for them - and their hockey friends.

16.01.2022 Just SK8 If you couldn’t make Friday or earlier today, there’s always Saturday Night, 6:30-8:30, or Sunday, 12:00-4:30. Please excuse the US spelling of our name; it’s what we have, until Rollerway Skate Centre is liberated!

15.01.2022 General skating Friday to Sunday every weekend. Plus, we’re open Labour Day Monday, 8 March 12:00-4:30.

15.01.2022 "Enquire within!" 14.01.2022 Say Hi! to some of our visitors recognise any of them?

14.01.2022 Just another hockey pic!

13.01.2022 Wonder which one of these 3 is the naughty kid...(and why he's wearing roller skates)...oops, shouldn't have said that

12.01.2022 "Coach makes Addy sports news!" Did you happen to see Ash’s picture in the Addy today? Always nice to see hockey getting a mention, and especially nice at the ...moment we don’t want people to forget they have a hockey-home to return to, when all this is over. BTW we really miss skating; do you? [repost] #we #wesk8ting Geelong Addy See more

08.01.2022 Should we have our own elite women's competition, inviting the best roller hockey players from Victoria (or even Australia) as part of a fortnightly or monthly ...competition, to be run Saturday evenings (8:45PM) or Sunday evening (6:15PM)? Another suggestion was to have several games Saturday night, have a sleep-over, have several more games Sunday morning, and then go home; this would be more of a tournament style, and possibly run on a quarterly basis, instead. Airfares are very low ATM, but even just considering the number of elite players in a 100KM radius of the centre, it seems quite doable. What do you think? See more

07.01.2022 Monday Night’s Fun Hockey Finals. Our Div 1 & 2 Bronze medal teams get special treatment (photographically, at least) because the way finals are structured, th...ey are the only teams out of the near 40 playing, which are eliminated in the first day of the first week. Season resumes Easter Monday subject to issues of mass hysteria #we [repost] See more

04.01.2022 When people wear helmets, does it matter if we show the front or the back of their heads? ...from last Thursday.

02.01.2022 Say Hi! to some of Rollerway's visitors recognise any of them?

02.01.2022 DON’T BE A SAD PERSON * Keep an eye on this page! (IIHAA) Don’t like Facebook? We don’t like COVID-19 or bankruptcy either, so keep an eye in IIHAA!... * Keep an eye on the website (www.rollerway.com.au/inline-hockey) * Buy your tickets early, so we can plan your sessions better (please) * Read what it says on the ticketing pages: https:// bookwhen.com/rhl You might get calls from Ash’s, Tam’s, or Rollerway’s phone numbers please respond - read their texts too, please. Our sad attempt at SAD humour is obviously to get your attention. In the past 30 years, Geelong has been an inline hockey powerhouse, with the Bisons, Rhinos, Raiders, Rangers, Snipers, and many other teams. It’s no BS that we are huge compared to almost anyone in AUS or NZ, but we have never, ever, been in a position where we are today, and it could ALL be gone tomorrow. We can’t waste resources and we need YOU to get your friends to come (or come back) to play. PLEASE DO WHAT YOU CAN!
