25.01.2022 1. When your emotions are stable and your mind is calm, you will naturally be nimble and alert at every point. 2. When energy flows through your whole body, there is a continuousness that cannot be interrupted. 3. When you are never affected by opponents going for your throat, everyone will think of you in heroic terms. What here is the great achievement? It is that all has been reached, inside and out, in general and in detail.

24.01.2022 When standing centered, your feet should be rooted. Start by understanding the four primary techniques, then advancing and retreating. The four techniques are ward-off, rollback, press, and push. You have to do a lot of work to get them to be real. For the body posture, your waist and headtop should both be correct.... When sticking, adhering, connecting, and following, your intention and energy are to be uniform throughout. Movement and awareness respond to each other. Mind is sovereign and body is subject. When you get the degree just right, you will naturally have both the civil quality and the martial. [i.e. If the degree is not right, there is overcooking or undercooking, in which case too civil would be undercooked and too martial would be overcooked.] See more

23.01.2022 When the form flows, energy circulates. The Phoenix Tai Chi Qigong form imitates the rotation of matters in the universe, like rotation of the earth and th...e rotation of the earth round the sun. Through the rotation of motions, the hands act as a guidance for energy to circle the body. The circulation of internal energy balances body and mind. See more

23.01.2022 Taiji Boxing’s movements are slow and even. External styles of boxing arts may seem to produce quick results, but there are so many bad habits that come with them. In the case of Taiji Boxing, the emphasis is on the liveliness of the muscles and bones, therefore the most important qualities in every movement are softness and mildness. If it is done slowly, then it can be soft. If it is done evenly, then it can be mild. Furthermore, the various movements all have a round ...shape, for it is within a circle that the transformations of emptiness and fullness are generated. The art’s limitless subtleties lie within these changes of emptiness and fullness. A beginner may not yet be able to understand this, but if you practice for a long time, you will perform with the proficiency you imagine, and your fascination for what you are doing will have no end. This art is sufficient for the task of developing the physique, but it is also able to regulate the temperament. Thus it can be said to cultivate both body and mind, and is therefore the most appropriate method of promoting physical education. See more

22.01.2022 Li Dianying, called Kuiyuan, was from Laishui County, Hebei, from a village called Dianshang Behind-the-Mountains. When he was young he attended school and excelled in small-script calligraphy. He was fond of boxing arts and learned Tantui, Baji, and other styles from a man named Xu from Yi Prefecture. Li’s skill became very refined and his strength very great. When he was in the prime of life, he was a bodyguard for government facilities and became very well-known. He w...as always fond of competing with opponents and frequently won. Later he encountered Guo Yunshen in competition. Li was an expert at using his legs. He lifted up his foot to kick and noticed Guo make a mere stroke with his hand. Behind Li there was a wooden stool, and he went over it and fell to the ground more than ten feet away. He got up and apologized for any offense, then did obeisance and became Guo’s student. He attended upon Guo as if they were father and son. After meeting Guo, he learned from him for several years, training day and night. He received the theory and mastered it inside and out, complete in every detail, though when I received instruction from him, his skill was not yet so exquisite. After he obtained the method, he was often a clerk, but never discussed boxing arts casually. I was then attending upon Guo Yunshen and receiving instruction from him. Although Li did not talk about boxing arts with people, he still practiced his boxing without slackening, and other people did not even know it. He was more than seventy years old when he died. 22.01.2022 Long Boxing: it is like a long river flowing into the wide ocean, on and on ceaselessly you will never stop the flow; be one drop in the river. [The thirteen dynamics are:] warding off, rolling back, pressing, pushing, plucking, rending, elbowing, and bumping which relate to the eight trigrams: ... and advancing, retreating, stepping to the left, stepping to the right, and staying in the center which relate to metal, wood, water, fire, and earth: the five elements. Warding off, rolling back, pressing, and pushing correspond to , , , and in the four principle compass directions [meaning simply that these are the primary techniques]. Plucking, rending, elbowing, and bumping correspond to , , , and in the four corner directions [i.e. are the secondary techniques]. Advancing, retreating, stepping to the left, stepping to the right, and staying in the center correspond to the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. These combined [8+5] are called the Thirteen Dynamics. An original note says: This relates to the writings of Zhang Sanfeng of Mt. Wudang. He wanted all the heroes in the world to live long and not merely gain skill.

19.01.2022 When practicing Taiji Boxing, it should have a pure naturalness. Instead of emphasizing exertion and emotion, you should emphasize using intention. Using exertion makes you clumsy. Using emotion slows you down. Therefore quelling emotion and letting go of exertion are requirements. Quelling emotion regulates the breath. Relaxing exertion promotes innate strength and inhibits acquired strength. Innate strength is real strength, whereas acquired strength is contrived strength. 18.01.2022 Confucius used self-discipline to cultivate his temperament and train his energy. The Yellow Emperor used delight for the Way to train his spirit and transform his energy. When Zen master Damo traveled east to transmit the Way, he began teaching the methods of Marrow Washing and Tendon Changing, and he created Yiquan and dragon & tiger stance training. Therefore he was the ancestor who paved the way for martial arts. Since ancient times, among wise men and scholars, sage...s and heroes, arhats and buddhas, there has never been a practitioner of martial arts who did not cultivate his temperament and train his energy. It says in Zhuangzi [chapter 3]: By way of skill, we get close to the Way. But although a skill seems a lesser Way, it turns out that its principles are limitless. To practice this skill, do not approach it casually, with an attitude of frivolous delight in the material world. Sages, scholars, and refined gentlemen are in agreement that you would not then be able to learn it. When learning how to train the energy, results come from an idea of a cycle of energy. The practice is to breathe through the nose with a short inhale and a long exhale, the substance of the exercise is that it is like a river flowing unceasingly, and the achievement is to have such an awareness of energy that you enter a state of pure void. First there are the paths of food and breath coming in and going out, then there is the course of kidney energy ascending. It is the art of using the acquired to assist the innate, of the revolving of energy through the energy circuit. In the beginning of training the energy circuit, draw in fresh air through your nose and send it directly to your sea of energy. From there it courses through to your tailbone, then curls toward your lower back, where your kidneys are positioned. This place is indeed the origin of the innate condition, the source for all the organs, and thereby the kidney water is sufficient. It then ascends along the Du meridian to the acupoints on the head, returning to the nose. The tongue attracts the kidney energy and from there it descends, filling the lower abdomen, gradually entering the elixir field. These are the essentials, the secret, of the energy circuit. Do not treat it lightly. See more

If your mind is not calm, it will not be focused, and each movement of your hands, be it forward or back, left or right, will not be in any definite direction. [Therefore your mind should be calm.] At first your movement will not yet be able to come from yourself, and so you should clear your mind and let your body intuit, going along with the opponent’s movements. 14.01.2022 In methods of taking care of your body, calming your heart and nourishing your kidneys is the main principle. If the heart can be calmed, then the fire of Li will not blaze outward. If the kidneys can be nourished, then the water of Kan will not flood outward. If the fire does not blaze outward, you will be without nervous disorders, and your heart will become still calmer. If the water does not flood outward, you will be without ejaculation problems, and your kidneys... will become still stronger. Thus the fire does not flare upward, the mind is calm, and the fire merely warms below. Essence and spirit are concentrated together, forming infant breathing, and naturally you will be able to prevent illness and prolong life. A Zen teacher said: All the doorways of enlightenment lead to the same place, but a constant virtue starts from the heart. As for the fire of the heart, it is the nature of fire to burn upward. As for the water of the kidneys, it is the nature of water to flow downward. But this shows an ignorance of infant breathing and of quiet cultivation. If it is difficult for the heart and kidneys to cooperate, water and fire will not complement each other, and you will easily be plagued with problems such as headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, and nocturnal emissions. Heart energy has to go downward and kidney energy has to go upward for the two to work together. Calmness in the elixir field can dispel countless illnesses, and Buddhist or Daoist meditation is the authentic means of achieving this. Ancient people said [Selections from Ancient Medical Texts, chapter 1]: Be clearing your mind, you free your spirit, and then before things occur, you will already know how they will turn out. [From Daodejing, chapter 47:] ‘It is not necessary to leave your house to understand people. It is not necessary to look out your window to see the Way.’ The mind is like unblocked water, which after a while clears to the point that one can see all the way through to the bottom. This is spiritual illumination. See more

12.01.2022 Once conceived, a person is imbued with a nourishing primordial energy, which does not veer in any direction from its function, for it is balanced and does not leak away. It is perfect and complete. It is genuine active energy, so it is considered an energy of centered harmoniousness. This energy tends to fill the limbs and bones, no place where it is not there, no moment when it is not so, both internally and externally, flowing unceasingly. Consequently the expanding a...nd contracting, movement and stillness of this art come from this energy. The marvels of releasing and extending, gathering and shrinking, come from this energy. Expanding is [releasing,] extending, and movement. Contracting is gathering, shrinking, and stillness. Expanding is active. Contracting is passive. Releasing, extending, and movement are active. Gathering, shrinking, and stillness are passive. Expanding and contracting are a continuous movement of passive and active, a taiji continuousness. Taiji is continuousness. Continuousness is Taiji. In terms of the theory, it is a grand polarity. In terms of the function, it is a continuousness. When it is time for active, then active. When it is time for passive, then passive. When it is time for upward, then upward. When it is time for downward, then downward. Active, then passive. Passive, then active. Continuously moving, yet always stabilized, expanding and contracting happen naturally, always moving from a point at the center between them [not a physical point, rather a center of principle unifying and integrating the two phenomena], which is a grand polarity. Ancient people could not explain it to others, but it is this. They were not able to write in books, yet still it is this. You can expand and contract, movement and stillness trading places. If you understand this principle clearly, then you can within each posture combine edge and center, and obtain its marvelous effects. A surrounding edge represents a formed empty circle. A rubbed-in center represents a formless full circle. These two are the principle of empty and full in Taiji Boxing. Its postures within are empty, then not empty, not empty, then empty. This energy circulates unimpeded, nimbly, and without pattern, neither caving in nor bulging out. Sending out, it goes beyond the ends of the universe. Rolling in, it stores away tightly Its changes are inexhaustible, for in using it, it is never used up, and all of it is learning of substance. Herein lies the reason Taiji Boxing has its name. 10.01.2022 A tai chi team puts on a performance at Shanghai’s first Tai Chi Cultural Festival in Minhang. The traditional Chinese sport and exercise regime is now gaining popularity in the district. Xu Kaikai THE first Shanghai Tai Chi Cultural Festival was held recently in Minhang, acknowledging the growing popularity of the ancient exercise, combat and fitness regime. The Xinhong Community Tai Chi Team won the Best Teamwork Award in a competition at the festival.... Since January, more than 320 tai chi teams have been formed in the district, attracting around 20,000 people, according to the district government. Everybody knows about tai chi, but not everyone practices it, said Zhu Fengqin, leader of the Xinhong team. However, in the past few months, interest in sports and exercise seems to be taking the district by storm. Liu Shijie is a well-known tai chi teacher in Minhang. A decade ago, he quit his job at a state-owned company and began teaching and promoting tai chi. Now his students include senior citizens, white-collar workers and business owners. In China, many people believe that tai chi is only for seniors, said Liu. Maybe that’s because all the tai chi masters we see in the media are white-bearded old men. But that stereotyping is misguided. Tai chi can benefit everyone in relieving pressure and building fitness, which city people need the most, he added. The district is actively encouraging residents to get more exercise. It is including exercise stations, outdoor sports venues and walking trails in greenbelt projects. Many of the venues were built after the original illegal constructions were removed. In the past, we had only a seniors’ activity room in the village, said Cai Meihua, a resident of Xupu Village. And seniors had to queue to use the venue. Now we have a new park nearby, with complete fitness facilities. It’s easier for people to gather and do tai chi.

05.01.2022 Tips for keeping your brain healthy: Dr. Daniel Amen, a clinical neuroscientist and brain imaging expert, also says anyone can take steps to keep their brains healthy long before Alzheimer’s becomes a concern: Maintain a proper diet. The brain benefits from or is harmed by what’s on the menu. For a healthier mind, eat super foods that nourish the brain, such as fruits, vegetables, fish and nuts.... Avoid using alcohol and tobacco. Heavy alcohol and tobacco use lowers blood flow to the brain and reduces the ability to think over time. Exercise the brain. Activities such as dancing, tennis or table tennis boost your coordination. Mindful exercises like yoga and Tai Chi reduce anxiety, depression and increase focus. In spite of the natural process of aging, you actually have a choice in how fast your brain ages, Amen said.

02.01.2022 Wild Goose Qi Gong The monks are said to have combined the movements of the wild goose, famed for its grace, strength and longevity, with their knowledge of the energy pathways in the body to create a form which is highly valued for its health benefits. In 1980 Grandmaster Yang Meijun, the 27th lineage holder of the wild goose qigong system, (based in China) decided that the time for secrecy was past and that everyone should be able to experience the health benefits of daya...n qigong for themselves. On her 80th birthday she announced her decision and since then the Chinese government has promoted wild goose qigong as a safe and healthy exercise for all. It has become one of the most popular qigong forms in China. The form has a wide variety of movements ranging from slow, fluid and gentle to quick and strong emulating the soaring, flapping, fluttering and spiralling graceful movements of the beautiful geese. Dayan qigong is a comprehensive system with as many as many as 72 forms of which 11 movement forms and 7 meditation techniques were published by Yang Meijun. Its said some others are in the process of being documented and published - so we'll just have to wait. The first 2 wild goose sets seem to be the most well known and easy to fit into a busy schedule taking about 10-15 minutes for each set. The first set is designed to work on the energies created, and blocked, by your current lifestyle and the second set works on the factors and tendencies that you inherited from your parents. If you choose to do the 2 sets together we're told that it is better to do the first set 1 2 or 3 times and then go straight into the the second set.
