24.01.2022 Lapis lazuli is a fine to coarse-grained blue lazurite-rich rock with other minerals (e.g. haüyne, calcite, pyrite) that is known as a decorative gem from mille...nnia. Occurs mainly in Sar-a-Sang in the Hindu-Kush mountains of Badakhshan, Afghanistan, in geological formations that can be 4 to 400 meters thick, which is quite impressive. Lapis has also been reported in Russia, Chile (Coquimbo, since 1905), USA and Mongolia. Its name is itself a curiosity as it comes from the Latin lapis, stone and Persian lajevard, blue stone, literally meaning stone blue stone, although in Antiquity it was known as sappheirus or as ultramarium, as it was wrongly thought to be the source for the blue ultramarium pigment (the actual source are in fact lazurite crystals). 17.01.2022 Since May 2017, rubies are mined in Aappaluttoq, Greenland. Even though mining started only a few years ago, rubies found here apparently formed around 2.7 to 3... billion years ago, making them as old as some diamonds or sometimes even older. The Gübelin Gem Lab had a chance to visit the mining site in Greenland back in August 2018, collecting precious samples to enrich our unique Gübelin Reference Collection. See more

12.01.2022 The terrible events in Beirut, Lebanon, made me remember that this beautiful Mediterranean city is home to one of the largest private mineral collections on dis...play on the MIM Museum since 2013. The circa 2,000 world-class mineral specimens of the Salim Eddé collection, that represent 450 different mineral species originating from 70 countries, seem to have remained safe despite the violence of the explosions. Since 2016 that the museum has also a section dedicated to Lebanese palaeontology displaying fossils encountered in the country. Here is a small selection of mineral specimens from the MIM Museum in Beirut, Lebanon, in a small demonstration of solidarity to the people of Beirut that will need our help as gem and mineral geek visitors to that country when lockdown and restrictions are behind us. 11.01.2022 Precious coral, as defined by Cibjo - The World Jewellery Confederation, is the trade name for the red to pink to white magnesian-rich calcitic skeletons of a f...ew species of the family Corallidae used in fine jewellery. In Biology, precious coral has a broader sense and includes all the species that may be used for decoration, including non-calcareous corals (e.g. black and golden coral) and even reef coral species (e.g. blue coral). This is a typical case where a trade name used by an industry for products differs from a scientific name used by the academia for substances. The name coral itself is already a collective name for more that 7300 species of cnidarians, but in the jewellery industry, the term precious coral has, as said, a specific meaning only applied to a hand-full of species. A relevant consideration here is the fact that no Corallidae family species are listed in the restrictive Appendix I and II of CITES, with three species listed in Appendix III for monitoring. One of these is Pleurocorallium elatius, the largest type of precious coral, known in the trade as Cerasuolo, Momo or Satsuma, that on rare occasions occurs in albino varieties, known as Angel’s Skin, Magai or Boké. 11.01.2022 Crystalline material can change colour as it grows. Liddicoatite is a variety of Tourmaline which you may have seen in jewellery shops. It is a durable gem which occurs in many different colours and will likely have a smaller price tag than the rubies, sapphires and emeralds!
