23.01.2022 Pronouns matter. Misgendering somebody can be really harmful. If youre unsure of the pronouns somebody uses, ask! Asking somebody what pronouns they use isnt ...prying into their personal life. Asking, and not assuming, is actually more respectful. . . Sometimes we might slip up and use the wrong pronoun. We get it - often its hard. Especially when folks use they/them pronouns. Practise. Practise using they/them/their in a sentence. . . Think about how often we use gendered language throughout the day. How often do we refer to our friends and family by using the phrase, "you guys" or "hey guys." Think about it - I bet you use those expressions without even thinking about it. It comes naturally, doesnt it? Try replacing the gendered term "guys" with folks. In a work situation, try addressing colleagues as folks instead of ladies and gentlemen. If youre sending emails, try using "Hi Team" or "Hello All" or "Good morning everyone." You may even wish to include your pronouns in your email signature. . . Are you wondering why were talking about pronouns? Here at CFIH we strongly align ourselves to working with folks from all walks of life. Body liberation is something that we not only advocate for, but actively work towards. Be it in our 1:1 sessions with clients, or in the work that we do outside of 1:1 sessions. Its in the letters we write to doctors advocating for our clients. Its in the professional development that we do that focuses on social justice aspects of body liberation. Its in the ways in which we commit to working with, and alongside our clients, our colleagues and our community to advocate for justice for ALL bodies. . . Pronouns Matter. The right to exist in YOUR body, as it is, right now, is paramount. You deserve to feel safe in the body that you have. . . #centreforintegrativehealth #cfih #feminism #fatpositive #socialjustice #eatingdisorderrecovery #healthateverysize #haes #fatactivism #intersectionality See more

14.01.2022 Graphics for Good has decided to start a group specifically for people who wish to learn, relearn, start looking at or exploring DBT skills, using art as the ve...hicle. This will be less structured than previous groups but will have at least one guided DBT based art practice within it. This online art group is a 1.5 hour facilitator led group via zoom. In the time it will look at DBT skills and do art exercises to help people use them whilst we are in isolation, lockdown or socially distancing. IT IS NOT ART THERAPY, but rather art as a healing practice using DBT theory and skills at its core. It will also be a "COVID-19 FREE SPACE", meaning this will be a safe space for people to not feed the fear, anxiety and sadness for a bit and up-skill ourselves to continue to make sense of our new world.... 13.01.2022 Looking After your Mental Health Part 3: Accepting Uncertainty Given the current state of the world, its really common to be feeling anxious and stressed abou...t the future! Counsellor, Jo and Psychology Graduate, Bec, are back again this week to discuss how to accept uncertainty and not let negative feelings about uncertainty consume our current state of mind. Its important to focus more on the present and remain aware of your current state, both physical and mental. Its also important to acknowledge your thoughts, as it is normal to worry, but to use techniques to bring you back to the present. Square breathing and grounding techniques that we have been through in previous videos are great exercises that you can use to gain mental clarity. Watch this space for our next video talking about Postponing Worry! For more information you can call us at the clinic, or if you would like to make an appointment with Counselor Jo you can contact her via email. : 3202 5216 : [email protected]

11.01.2022 What a powerful quote. As many of you would have seen through our social media posts, we are presenting at this years International Eating Disorders conference... in Sydney in June of this year. Were currently up to our eyeballs in so much of the research surrounding body image and eating disorders, with a specific focus on how that all translates into working with folks in bigger bodies, . . To say that we werent surprised by a lot of the research out there (a lot of it is just really dehumanising!) is an understatement. Its been an expedition, really, to dig down into all of this, particularly when so much of the literature is confirming what we already thought - folks in bigger bodies are repeatedly left out of a lot of the literature, and the literature that does centre bigger bodies does so with a weight loss focus. There have been numerous face palm moments, and a few *head-desk* moments too. . . Amongst all of the harmful rhetoric, there have been gems like this paper by Hilary Kinavey of Be Nourished and Carmen Cool. This quote just sums it up so beautifully - the issue of anti-fat bias and harmful rhetoric around fat shame needs to be placed where it belongs. It is NOT an individual issue, it is a broader, structural and systemic issue that needs to be addressed as such. . . We are committed to bettering our own understanding of what it means for folks in bigger bodies. We are so grateful for our clients who continuously share their vulnerable selves with us. We believe that learning from lived experience is such a powerful tool. . . #centreforintegrativehealth #cfih #feminism #fatpositive #socialjustice #eatingdisorderrecovery #healthateverysize #haes #fatactivism #intersectionality See more

11.01.2022 The social distancing rules accompanying the pandemic are tough for everyone. However, they are particularly challenging for those who were already prone to exp...eriencing loneliness and isolation (including those who are single and/or living alone). The feeling of loneliness is exacerbated not only by reduced opportunities for social connection but by the fact that those around us are stressed, preoccupied, and have little of themselves to give us. It is in times such as these that we need to acknowledge that people not being there for us is more about their capacity than it is our deservedness of care. And, it is in times such as these that we need to have more than one person we can turn to so that our needs are eventually met by someone. A client and I came up with the idea of a "phone a friend" list which included all the people and services she can call when she is feeling alone, depressed, or stressed. We recognised that it is unlikely that the first person on the list is always going to be able to support her owing to the reasons above. We agreed that, in such instances, she would keep working her way down the list until someone was able to listen and give her what she needed. If, in developing a list of your own, you realise a lacking in the people you have to call, this might be an opportunity to forge new relationships, foster existing ones, or develop your skills in asking for help. The team at CFIH are here and available to help with all of the above. Until such time as your list grows, here are some friendly options you can add to your call list: The Butterfly Foundation: 1800 33 4673 Lifeline: 13 11 14 Suicide Call Back Service: 1300 659 467 Beyond Blue: 1300 22 46 36 1800RESPECT: 1800 737 732 MensLine Australia: 1300 78 99 89 Relationships Australia Qld: 1300 364 277 Headspace: 1800 650 890 SANE Australia: 1800 18 72 63 Kids Helpline Official: 1800 55 1800

11.01.2022 Last week, I sat across the room from one of my adolescent clients as she sobbed about the challenges of recovery from an eating disorder. Following the onset o...f Anorexia Nervosa, my client was admitted to hospital and weight restored before being discharged and returned to school. My clients struggle to reacquaint herelf with a body that now felt foreign to her was exacerbated by the incessant appearance-comparisons and talk of needing weight-loss among her peers. Her discomfort in adhering to a meal plan much larger than she was accustomed was intensified by her groups lunch-time discussions of dieting and eating rituals which mirrored her eating disorders tricks. Like the recovering addict, my client confessed to waking each morning with a strong temptation to turn to her vice (her eating disorder) but then combatting this urge with a resolve to not give in. Unlike the addict however, my client reported being unable to navigate even a few hours of her day without someone offering her the opportunity to indulge her forbidden desire. I cant imagine anyone (let alone an adolescent) with a drug or alcohol addiction abstaining from their substance of choice whilst surrounded by others engaging in the very behaviour they are longing to partake in. And yet, this is precisely the sort of challenge someone with an eating disorder is facing as they attempt to navigate recovery whilst immersed in diet culture. While treating professionals have a lot more to learn and treatment manuals have a long way to go in improving the rates of recovery for those with an eating disorder, I believe that it is society (through its weight-loss, dieting obsession) that has the most to answer for. Until such time as society resolves its toxic ways, please know that the team at CFIH is behind and cheering on each and every one of you brave enough to forge a pathway to recovery amidst such circumstances.

09.01.2022 The more we withdraw, hide and avoid the things we feel shame about, the stronger the shame grows. Binge-eating is one of those behaviours that clients have... the most difficulty talking about. Unfortunately these issues are under-reported, under-represented in those seeking treatment compared to population prevalence data, hidden from loved ones and can continue in private for long periods before help is sought. The shame exacerbates the binge-eating problem and thus a viscous cycle is established. Here’s a few myths to bust on binge-eating: It’s just me. Everyone else seems to have their sh*t together with food. Nope, around 5-7% of our Australian population is dealing with a binge-eating problem and a study at Swinburne Uni (Philippou, 2020) has shown a 35% increase in binge-eating behaviours during the COVID-19 period. I just need to find a diet plan I can stick to and lose weight. If someone (even a health professional) tries to recommend this to you, run the other way. Restriction is a huge driver of binge eating. Effective treatment requires a deeper dive into the mechanisms maintaining the problem and to do this we need to put hit pause on the pursuit of weight loss. I’m not sick enough to warrant treatment. If it’s getting in the way of your emotional or physical health, or is holding you back from doing the things you want to in life, it deserves treatment. Period. If you have a binge-eating problem, please reach out for support. That first conversation can be tough but a life without binge-eating is so worth it #bingeeating #bingeeatingrecovery #eatingdisorderrecovery #eatingdisordertreatment #disorderedeating #eatingdisorderdietitian #edrd #nondietdietitian #dietitiansofinstagram #brisbanedietitian

09.01.2022 EATING DISORDER TREATMENT PLANS New changes to Medicare mean that some sufferers of eating disorders are now eligible for more subsided visits to their psychologist (up to 40 visits) and dietitian (up to 20 visits). This will be a great help to many, but due to budgetary constraints the government has set strict eligibility criteria for this support. Please discuss at your next visit to see if you may be eligible. VERY IMPORTANT to note that if you dont happen to meet these ...criteria it doesnt mean that your condition or suffering is less than others, or not worthy of treatment. The traditional mental health and management plans remain in place as does support from the public system & NGOs. If you need help with eating concerns please see a professional. https://thebutterflyfoundation.org.au//medicare-changes-i/

09.01.2022 Are you a family member or carer supporting a loved one with an eating disorder? Would you like to connect with other carers, hear others experiences, or share... your experiences? We encourage you to come along to our next Carer Connect Support Group on Wednesday 13th of November from 6:30-8:30pm. The Group is an opportunity to feel more connected and informed. This month we are very excited to have two guest speakers, a GP and Dietitian who both have substantial experience supporting individuals recovering from an eating disorder. The evening will be an opportunity for family members and carers to ask questions and gain further insights into eating disorder recovery. If you would like to RSVP please contact EDQ by midday Monday 11th November. If you are new to our service, a Family & Carer Team member will arrange a phone appointment prior to the Group. See more

08.01.2022 Despite what messages we receive about weight and bodies, and especially about the weight and bodies of folks with eating disorder, believe us when we say that ...living in a bigger body does not make your eating disorder any less valid. You deserve support. You deserve compassionate, non judgemental, weight inclusive, trauma informed support. . . When we dont directly challenge the assumptions and misconceptions our wider society has about eating disorders, we continue to make recovery more and more difficult for folks whose bodies may not fit the stereotypical eating disorder mould. . . Let this be your Monday morning reminder that you are worthy of support. . . #centreforintegrativehealth #cfih #feminism #fatpositive #socialjustice #eatingdisorderrecovery #healthateverysize #haes #fatactivism #intersectionality See more

05.01.2022 Sadly, I have had to train the people in my life to not comment on my appearance. The good news (from my experience) is that most people are relatively "trainab...le". The training process hasnt always been easy but it has always been worth it in the end. Not receiving comments (positive or negative) about my appearance has assisted me greatly in not only developing a neutral/indifferent stance towards my looks but also in developing a secure sense of self. The "training process started with my grandmother whom has always greeted me by commenting first on my appearance in general and then on my weight/shape specifically. Ill be honest, it took her a number of conversations to "get it" and while I love her dearly, she still needs a reminder every now again. To begin with, I broached the conversation light-heartedly and with humour: "Nanny, there are 200 things about me more amazing and interesting than my appearance. Could we focus on those instead?" and "Of all the incredible feats I have accomplished in my life, we are going to focus on the thing that I can take absolutely no credit for?!" and "I have a dual doctorate in clinical psychology and health psychology and youre going to congratulate me on my face?!" My responses (as fabulously sassy as they were) made the way for more thoughtful conversations. While I still dont think that my grandmother understands why we dont talk about my appearance, she does understand that its important to me that we dont. More importantly, my grandmother has gotten to know me (and hopefully, appreciate me) at a deeper and more meaningful level. I hope this inspires you to spark similar conversations with your loved ones and Id love to hear your approaches to doing so. credit: @meandmyed

04.01.2022 Good reminder for the Festive Season

04.01.2022 Most of the time, we do the best we can with what we have. Sometimes we can feel ashamed of things we have done or ways we have coped in the past. Remember: judging and blaming do not solve anything; understanding does. And when we know better, we do better.

03.01.2022 Great reminder from GrayMind Psychology that its important to go to therapy even when things are going well. Its easy to lose momentum when youre feeling better but this is often when the most progress is made.

03.01.2022 Do what you need to do to get through. Whatever that is. However you need. You have permission to fall apart if you need to. You have permission to feel sad if ...you feels sad. You have permission to feel angry if you feel angry. You have permission to feel. Period. You dont have to be all things to all people these holidays. . . Your needs are important too.
