22.01.2022 BACK PAIN ANYONE ????? As reported in The Australian - 7/2/20 Fiona Wilson - Associate Professor of Physiotherapy, Trinity College, Dublin.... Provided it is carefully guided, yoga might be helpful for some people, Wilson says. A study of 320 people with back pain showed how a yoga class designed specifically for back pain proved an effective way to improve their symptoms. Yoga can ease many elements of back pain. About 70 per cent of the subjects were taking pain-relief medication at the start of the study, according to the researchers, from the Boston Medical Centre. Yet of those who did a weekly yoga class for 12 weeks, the percentage of participants still taking pain medication had dropped to about 50 per cent. Yoga will improve important components of fitness for back pain, such as range of movement, but it does need to be appropriate to a person’s individual needs, Wilson says.

14.01.2022 A 12-week yoga intervention resulted in improvements in depressive symptoms and an increase in the neurotransmitter GABA in people with depression. The increase... in GABA, which plays a role in mood disorders, lasted for 8 days. The study involved 28 people between the ages of 18 and 65 years old who had depression. A variety of diagnostic tools and self-reports assessed the participants' mental health, depressive symptoms, and suicide risk. Prior to being randomized to either a low-dose or high-dose [Iyengar yoga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iyengar_Yoga) intervention group, the participants underwent magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) scanning to assess GABA levels. The low-dose group engaged in two 90-minute yoga sessions and three 30-minute homework sessions per week. The high-dose group engaged in three 90-minute yoga sessions and four 30-minute homework sessions per week. At the end of the 12-week intervention, the participants underwent a second scan, engaged in a 90-minute yoga session, and then underwent a third scan. The participants in both the low-dose and high-dose groups reported that their depression symptoms improved. The MRS data revealed that participants who engaged in the low-dose yoga intervention exhibited significant increases in GABA levels between the first and third scan and between the second and third scan. The increased GABA levels were short-lived, however (lasting less than eight days after completing a yoga session), indicating that yoga sessions should be regular and often to prevent symptoms of depression.

08.01.2022 As the body ages, unless we maintain our flexibility it gradually declines which increases the likelihood of aches, pains and even injury. My classes are designed to encourage men, who are traditionally less likely to come to a yoga class, but who would benefit greatly from it, to try this non competitive approach to looking after themselves. No previous experience needed, just wear loose clothing and bring an open mind and positive attitude. No equipment needed, mats provided. I look forward to welcoming you to yoga.
