25.01.2022 DISCUSS Consider how you use your space and talk about it. It is the (traditionally) more expensive spaces like the kitchen and bathroom that require the most careful consideration.... If you are a massive foodie, and are guardian to your Grandmothers extensive collection of crockery and serving-ware, you might want to create more space and more storage in your kitchen. Or if you invariably have two people trying to get ready, fighting over the bathroom mirror, maybe you need a double sink in your bathroom/s? Because it is these things that will make a home work for your family.

24.01.2022 WHAT WILL YOU KEEP? Were all transitioning to a bit of a new normal at the moment. And there is a special sort of joy as playgrounds are set to reopen tomorrow. But there are changes weve all made in our homes that have impacted our environment (and our lives) positively.... What will you keep? https://www.washingtonpost.com//five-habits-keep-we-rega/

24.01.2022 GARDEN Have you taken advantage of time at home and headed into your garden recently? (Or your indoor plant jungle?) What have you been growing? Digging up? Doing?... Some very lovely looking tomato plants at the completed Porcupine Ridge property.

24.01.2022 FAVOURITE Do you have a favourite room in your home? We asked Alicia, Geometrica Designer, what her favourite room is. And heres what she said:... The living room. It is the centre of my home and fulfils many purposes. It is a space for family, comfort, warmth, social gatherings, and has given us many happy times. Wed love you to tell us which room you think of most fondly!

24.01.2022 IN PROGRESS Work at this Ascot Vale property is well and truly underway with the first floor framing up. The owners are going to be able to take full advantage of that great view.

24.01.2022 KENSINGTON EXTERIOR Here are a couple of progress pictures of a build in progress in Kensington. Those gorgeous bricks are recycled, helping to tell a story about the house and keep the build sustainable.

23.01.2022 TINY FOREST We love the concept of tiny urban forests. Can you think of a location or two that would be perfect for one of these to be developed?... https://www.facebook.com/worldeconomicforum/videos/358698271782485

23.01.2022 COMMUNITY There are some fun, cute and plain helpful community and household initiatives going on at the moment. At the Ascot Vale Little Free Pantry - the Spoonvale installation and the pantry itself are up and running - taking appropriate precautions and observing curfew.... Weve seen other spoon settlements, posies of violets on offer for passers by, chalk activities on paths and more. What have you seen in your neighborhood?

23.01.2022 Our Kensington terrace project is staying super hygienic. Its great to see builders getting on board to keep everyone safe!

21.01.2022 WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY Tomorrow, June 5, is World Environment day. The theme is Time for Nature. And you are called to Raise Your Voice #fornature.... Many of us have been able to breathe more freely with less pollution from reduced traffic recently, and have been resourceful; making do with what we have to avoid a trip to the shops. How can we make these changes more permanent and enjoy the benefits they bring? There are stacks of events being held, many of which are online. This gives us an excellent opportunity to access events from a range of places, in a range of languages, on a range of topics. How will you be marking World Environment Day 2020? https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/

21.01.2022 KENSINGTON This home is a hop, skip and a jump from South Kensington train station. And Reborn Projects work to revitalise the historic Victorian terrace house is now underway.... Bricks have been saved and set aside for reuse, and the tricky job of working around old bluestone footings on a narrow lot has begun. ... Progress photo courtesy of Reborn Projects

20.01.2022 SEDDON Another project underway! Were looking forward to seeing DM Urban projects transform this home and bring the designs to life. https://www.facebook.com//a.166610453361/2772973226258848/

20.01.2022 SEDDON We did the design work for alterations to this property about a decade ago. It was one of Logans first projects as Geometrica. Logan designed an extension to a single fronted Victoria cottage on a super tight site in Seddon.... The alterations made use of recycled bricks from demolition with double glazing and gorgeous timber cladding. North facing clerestory windows with shading over for great winter sun as well as summer shade. Its now FOR SALE! And beautifully styled and photographed. You can check out the listing to see the interiors here: https://www.domain.com.au/43-hamilton-street-seddon-vic-301

20.01.2022 CREMORNE We did design work for a renovation and extension to this Cremorne terrace home on a tight block. The work was managed by an owner builder.... These photos give you an idea of the before and after of the home: a third bedroom was added, a staircase with study area underneath and lots more natural light.

19.01.2022 CEILING Showing this Yarraville job in progress, with the raked ceiling making the most of the available height. The living areas will be flooded with natural light, and lighting has been specified to light each area separately.

19.01.2022 CLEAN HOME LOAN Recently, a client on Maribyrnong Road asked us about a Clean Energy Home Loan (this particular product is offered by Bank Australia - you can see the details at https://www.bankaust.com.au//home-/clean-energy-home-loan/) Weve directed them to get a Residential Efficiency Scorecard done. Then we will help them to increase the rating for the design work we are doing by making tweaks and changes that will make a difference without compromising on their needs.... The finance will be at a discounted rate, and the interest paid is guaranteed not to fund industries such as fossil fuels, nuclear power and live animal exports. Have you come across any clever green choices like this lately? Image of a completed project in Brunswick.

19.01.2022 FOR SALE Just look at the beautiful facade of this Ascot Vale home! The steel framed doors / windows at the back, and the sunlight streaming through them, are stunning too.... Logan drew up preliminary concept ideas for the property when the outgoing owners were planning to renovate. (Then they handled the planning application and the builder drafted the working drawings.) https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-vic-ascot+vale

19.01.2022 PLASTIC FREE JULY Are you participating in Plastic Free July? Please let us know your plans! Minimising waste has been harder in 2020, with gloves, face masks, takeaway cups. We obviously want to keep everyone safe, but we want to care for our environment too.... Waste in the building industry is a problem too! When undertaking work at your home, clean packing from material deliveries might be able to be donated, given away to someone moving house, or recycled. Chat with your builder to see what can be moved on instead of put into the bin.

19.01.2022 NEARLY THERE We visited our Kensington site and can’t wait to see it finished very very soon. If the bathroom floor tiling is anything to go by, it’s going to be an exciting final reveal.

17.01.2022 SCRAP KOALA This Koala has been made from scrap metal by Andrew Whitehead Sculptures, and will be installed in Mooroopna, Vic, along with other community symbols and animals. We love seeing repurposed items at Geometrica, and the delightful expression on this guys face makes it even sweeter.

17.01.2022 INDOOR PLANTS Theres no denying the aesthetic and air purifying benefits of choosing the right indoor plant for your home and lifestyle. Logan and Alicia were asked what their favourite is.... Logan chose a Monstera, and Alicia a String of Pearls. Vote for which of these is your favourite! Or, if you have a veritable jungle of interesting species at home, do you have a different favourite? Both images credited to the green thumbs over at Mosey in Yarraville.

16.01.2022 KENSINGTON INTERIOR We've made use of the old fireplaces in the Kensington project. One is housing the bathroom vanity.... And the other will be the fridge space. Also, check out those lovely shiny penny rounds and the face level storage in the bathroom.

15.01.2022 FAVOURITE MELBOURNE BUILDING We asked our staff member Alicia what her favourite building is in Melbourne. Heres her answer: I have always admired the Manchester Unity Building in the city. It is a wonderful example of Art Deco architecture, a period that I very much enjoy. Its repetition of simple geometries appears so graceful and effortless. ... Image credit: Manchester Unity Building in 1940, courtesy of State Library Victoria.

15.01.2022 TINY Weve just started on design work, for a couple who are currently in Ascot Vale. But this one is a bit different - its going to be a tiny dwelling on wheels.... Are you fascinated by tiny homes? Photograph of screens installed to a property in West Foorscray - because looking at how the outside of a tiny home will work is important in the overall design.

14.01.2022 IN PROGRESS Unfortunately, we still cant take any finished photographs at the moment. But we have design projects in progress in Brunswick, Yarraville, Footscray, Yarraville, Ascot Vale and Albion.... And Logan has been thoroughly enjoying the reduction in emissions and increased encouragement to bike ride.

13.01.2022 HOME BUILDER Are you planning to try and access the Federal Governments Home Builder incentive? The timeline is definitely looking a bit tight for some, and there are dollar figures in relation to property value, build / renovation value and home owner income - more information available here:... https://treasury.gov.au/coronavirus/homebuilder However, Geometrica challenges you to look at how youd use the $25K to make your home more sustainable, and hopefully save yourself on outgoings in the coming years. You could include (pending cost of heating / cooling): Insulation $1500 Solar PV panels $5000 Heat pump hot water $2500 Efficient electric heating / cooling, ranges from $5000 - $15 000 for the house Battery $10000 For insulation and solar panels, you can expect to save equivalent to the cost in approximately 5 years, and for hot water it may take up to 10 years. And you will also be reducing your carbon emissions and contributing to caring for our environment.

13.01.2022 NOT SO PUNGENT Regardless of whether youre having your home painted as part of renovation or extension works, building a new home or using your time self-isolating to do a bit of repainting, have you considered Low or Zero VOC paint? Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, are carbon-containing substances that become a vapour or gas readily.... VOCs are bad for the environment, and may also affect peoples health as they are released over time rather than only at the time of application. They are also why freshly applied paint has a strong odour. Low and Zero VOC paint may not be as durable as more conventional products, but as technology and formulas improve - so does the durability of the product. And its certainly a more sustainable (and less stinky) choice.

12.01.2022 KINGSVILLE Do you remember the crazy wallpaper we shared a few months back? Well, its sadly getting covered over, but if you check out this progress shot you can see a few snippets between the framing.... The majority of work is delayed due to current restrictions, but the roof and rooftop solar PV system are still moving forward in the next couple of weeks.

11.01.2022 THE NEW NORMAL About a year ago, we adopted The New Normal. A set of rules to guide Geometrica. These rules were adopted to help reduce carbon emissions and our ecological footprints in the face of a global climate emergency.... Obviously, the landscape, and how we use our homes, has changed since then. But our new normal still applies. On all new project we work on, we will: Use only new electric appliances / services, i.e. no new gas or wood burners Include solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (or commitment to sourcing 100% renewable energy) Be designed to ~7.5 star energy rating Use only services with low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants <677 Use low-carbon alternative cement Include a water tank connected to WC Use only light / medium coloured roofs, i.e. no dark roofs

10.01.2022 STUDIO We are doing design work for a small Altona North project, which in previous years may have been called a Granny Flat, but is now often more pleasantly referred to as a Studio. The property owners are replacing their existing shed with a new small habitable building, detached from the home, and making the most of the available area with a room, storage space and ensuite.... Image showing external shade screen designed by Geometrica in West Footscray.

08.01.2022 LOGAN Here is a rare photograph of Logan. It was taken about 5 years ago, and he was measuring up a warehouse space in Moonee Ponds. It was a food (perhaps seafood) space, hence Logans fancy hair net and foot covers for food hygeine.

06.01.2022 PETITION Moonee Valley Sustainability, of which Logan is a member, are calling for stronger climate action in Moonee Valley. Now is a pivotal moment to set some strong interim targets to guide us safely through the next 5, 10 and 20 years. ... Please sign & share to anyone you know in Moonee Valley. https://www.change.org/p/stronger-climate-action-in-moonee-

06.01.2022 SOLAR PANEL MAINTENANCE Maintaining your solar panels will ensure they perform at their best, which will ultimately continue to save you money in power bills and reduce carbon emissions,. Heres some advice on what should be included in routine maintenance and who is accredited to do this maintenance work.... Have you had your solar panels checked?

05.01.2022 HEATING Lots of questions are popping up in online forums at the moment about heating. Its cold, and in Melbourne were spending more time at home than ever before.... We want to be warm and comfortable, without dressing in too many layers, but we dont want power bills that rival the amount we wished we were spending on a holiday somewhere warmer. Gas isnt the answer. Its not cheaper, and the emissions are costly for our environment. Efficient electrical heating is better for your family, and your wallet. By choosing the right system for your home (which is always easier when youre planning a build or renovation), you can have a warm house without a massive bill - especially if you have solar panels to help offset the electricity use and offset your carbon footprint. Also, good insulation is key! Again, best planned for during a build or renovation, but also worthwhile retrofitting to keep the warmth in during winter and keep your house cooler during summer too. Photograph of completed project in West Footscray.

04.01.2022 BRICKS Loving the work that Reborn Projects have done on the Kensington project with reclaimed bricks from the site. The home owner has reportedly said I love it so much I want to come and hug it, and that couldnt make us happier!

03.01.2022 MINOR ADJUSTMENTS We asked Alicia (design staff at Geometrica) to share a tip for making a home sustainable. She said: I am new to this industry and while I still have a great deal to learn, one of the most useful ideas that I have come across is how much sustainability can be achieved with only minor adjustments to the home. By simply learning how to operate your home like a device, in response to its own environment, you can make great strides in reducing your carbon foo...tprint. Wise words Alicia! Photograph of a completed Brunswick project.

03.01.2022 RENEWABLES What do you think? We like the idea of the government investing in renewable energy to stimulate the economy and create a greener 2040.

02.01.2022 JUST STARTED The builder started work at this terrace home on Victoria Street Footscray last week. The house will be enlarged, and the existing footprints functionality improved to meet the needs of the young family who call it home.... The finished product will also be more energy efficient.

02.01.2022 TEAM GEOMETRICA Have you met Alicia? She works part time with Geometrica, and is pictured (last Winter) at the far left of this Altona North property. Recently, Alicia answered some questions for us so you can get to know a bit more about her. Here are a couple of her answers:... Most Melbourne trait? Definitely coffee. Its my favourite part of the morning, I cant start the day without one! Favourite local(ish) cafe? The Gordon St Bakery. So simple and delightful, with incredible pastries.

02.01.2022 ROOFING The light roof sheets installed in Ascot Vale will reflect more of the suns rays, keeping the home cooler during summer and decreasing the need to use air conditioning. Specifying lighter coloured roof sheets equals a more sustainable home.

01.01.2022 PROGRESS IN SEDDON The project in Pilgrim Street is coming along very nicely. Different teams from DM Urban projects are at work on a couple of stages of the site preparation.

01.01.2022 UNDERSTANDING BUILDING AIR TIGHTNESS Are you familiar with this concept? And is this something that, as a home owner, youd be interested in having incorporated into a new build or major renovations?... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kKkDGatZsE
