19.01.2022 APOD: Rotating Moon from LRO (2018 Mar 18) Video Credit: LRO, Arizona State U., NASA https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap180318.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sN...UNB6CMnE8 Repost with active video Explanation: No one, presently, sees the Moon rotate like this. That's because the Earth's moon is tidally locked to the Earth, showing us only one side. Given modern digital technology, however, combined with many detailed images returned by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), a high resolution virtual Moon rotation movie has been composed. The above time-lapse video starts with the standard Earth view of the Moon. Quickly, though, Mare Orientale, a large crater with a dark center that is difficult to see from the Earth, rotates into view just below the equator. From an entire lunar month condensed into 24 seconds, the video clearly shows that the Earth side of the Moon contains an abundance of dark lunar maria, while the lunar far side is dominated by bright lunar highlands. Currently, over 20 new missions to the Moon are under active development from four different countries, most of which have expected launch dates either this year or next. https://lro.gsfc.nasa.gov/ https://lroc.sese.asu.edu/ https://www.nasa.gov/lro Starship Asterisk* APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/discuss_apod.php?date=180318 #APOD

18.01.2022 From last nights twitch stream, first one :)

17.01.2022 Final figures are to come, but it will look like over 250 locations and 40,000 people. Well done Australia!

16.01.2022 For those wanting to view the Geminids Meteor shower, tonight will be the best night with the weather. The Moon does not set till around midnight nor does Gemini rise until then. This is also a very good night to view comet 46P/Wirtanen. I'll be heading out to the Chapman valley lookout around midnight.

14.01.2022 Hello All, Stargazing Live and the World record attempt is next week and we are looking for volunteers on the night to help out with the Record Attempt in accordance with the Guinness World Record Guidelines. We are looking for: 2 x witnesses... - Witnesses will oversee the event to ensure it is run in accordance with GWR guidelines. Post-attempt, they will submit a ‘Witness Statement for Record Claim’. A witness can be anyone who is in attendance but not participating directly in the World Record Attempt, e.g. parents of students attending. steward (s) - One steward per fifty people is required. - Stewards supervise the attempt for eligibility and full participation, e.g. ensuring participants do not leave their designated area and that all participants are stargazing for the whole ten-minute period. Post-attempt, Stewards will submit a ‘Steward Statement for Record Claim’. 2 x timekeepers - Timekeepers are responsible for ensuring start and fnish times are synched with the Stargazing Live broadcast (for larger groups a bell, microphone or loud hailer may be useful for keeping time). Any accurate timing devices may be used (stopwatch, smartphone timer etc): the aim is to keep synchronised time with the Stargazing Live broadcast. Timekeepers will submit a ‘Timekeeper Statement for Record Claim’. 2 x photographer/videographer (can be the same person) Photographer / Videographers are to record the attempt for GWR verifcation as well as media purposes. Certain aspects of your event must be documented with photographs and video (see Volunteer Pack for details) and submitted with your other evidence. Any photographic equipment can be used which is able to capture the required images and footage, however the entire attempt must be recorded in a continuous video, so it is important to have sufficient memory and battery life if using a smart phone or tablet. On the night, upload your best shots to#stargazingABC or into your Dropbox folder: ABC may use these in post-event media Registration We are also in need of people to help out with the registration point, getting people registered if not, handing out wrist bands, telescopes etc. If anyone knows of some high-vis shirts we can borrow for the event please let us know. At the moment we still don't have a projector and screen nor PA system to broadcast the show on the night as the one we had lined up fell through so any help in this would be awesome. If you have a Tablet please bring it so we can at least have the show on them for people to watch and for the record timings. Feel free to shoot me any questions.

13.01.2022 Braved the blasting wind last night and took a short time lapse of comet 46P/Wirtanen with a few satellites and some small meteors from the Geminids.

04.01.2022 I witnessed something today I wish to share with everyone. This morning when I arrived in Gero for work I commented to a colleague how bright Venus was and look...ed up at 0715 to see if it was visible - bright as. At ten minutes to eight it was still easily visible and the sun was well and truly up. So at nine o’clock I had another look see and sure enough it was still easily found with the aide of my Sky Guide app. Venus was easily visible all the way through to 1pm!! So if you’ve got some time you might want to challenge yourself and see if you can spot Venus in the mid day blue sky! Helpful hint - get into the shadow of a building to initially spot it then try in direct sunlight. This was taken with me iPhone at lunchtime. Venus is just above the gutter. See more
