25.01.2022 Music & Therapy Children of all ages express themselves through music. From birth, parents instinctively use music to calm and soothe children, to express love and joy, and to engage and interact. Parents can build on these natural instincts by learning how music can impact child development, improve social skills, and benefit children of all ages. Using music in therapies can include any form of music whether it be listening, singing, playing or dancing. Music is a fa...ntastic way to engage your child and teach them a variety of new words and sounds. It can also teach them how to move their bodies in different ways and build strength and coordination. A very special friend and colleague of mine recently introduced me to Therapeutic Listening which is a research based tool for treating people of all ages who have difficulty with processing sensory information, listening, attention, and communication. On this particular day I found I was unfocused and distracted, so she popped the headphones on my head, put on a music track and BAMMMM I was on fire! Music is for all ages isn’t it?! Music also encourages children to watch, listen, copy and make requests. It’s also a great way to introduce the different sounds in words and to explore rhyming words. Music is an amazing tool for helping children learn new vocabulary/signs and communication skills as well as bringing lots of joy. For me and the children I work with, if I can spark that gleam of joy in their eye and build engagement and communication this way - bring out the speakers because we have found our way in. Be sure to check out the music by the talented Genevieve Jereb and my favourite, the incredible @petercombemusic #kidsmusic #childrensmusic #music #musicforkids #kids #musiceducation #babymusic #toddlermusic #kidsmusicclass #kidssongs #preschoolmusic #speechtherapy #slp #speechpathology #slpeeps #speechlanguagepathology #slplife #earlyintervention #autism #speechlanguagepathologist #speechdelay #ot #occupationaltherapy See more

25.01.2022 I wish I knew this years ago when my kids were little! But, I didn’t become a specialist in pediatric feeding until my kids were in middle school! The mist...akes I am sharing here are some of my own & are very common. . Let’s break down these misteps & see how they influence baby’s mouth development: . Spoon is too deep, too wide or just too big for baby’s mouth. This causes parents to scrape the food behind the top lip, upper gum or palate. Ever had food stuck on the roof of your mouth or (yuck) stuck under your top lip? Your tongue goes searching for it way up there & pushes forward, creating a thrusting pattern. . We want baby to learn to keep the tongue in behind the lips to develop a mature swallow pattern at about 12 months of age. That swallowing pattern is crucial to help baby advance to safely swallowing more advanced foods after chewing with those brand new teeth! . So, what you do with the spoon today will impact how baby’s mouth develops, especially the movement of the tongue. . The pace is also important remember to read baby’s cues! (See my previous post on spoon feeding.) . I know you’re wonderingwhat’s wrong with swiping the spoon to grab a little mess? Well, for many kids, it’s disruptive to their nervous system. The mouth, especially at midline (nose to chin) has nerve endings that are designed to be very sensitive. Rather than swiping across that area with a hard spoon, try using a barely-damp washcloth & pat firmly for less disruptive sensory input. . When presented correctly, the spoon is a magic wand. When we use the techniques in the next post, the lips seal, the tongue finds it’s happy spot in the mouth & the jaw works in a coordinated fashion. . We need that lip seal, tongue placement & jaw coordination for early biting, chewing & swallowing development. . You got this! 24.01.2022 Communication is a basic human right. On Human Rights Day (10 December) help us raise awareness of communication disability and the 1.2 million Australians with... a communication disability. The day’s theme in 2020 is Recover Better - Stand Up for Human Rights. The coronavirus pandemic (#COVID19) has highlighted the challenges faced by Australians with communication disability. As we rebuild in 2021 let’s create equal opportunities for all, address the failures exposed and exploited by COVID-19, and apply human rights standards to tackle entrenched, systematic, and intergenerational inequalities, exclusion and discrimination, especially where it relates to communicating. Communication accessibility is something that should be available for all Australians. #SpeakUp4CommRights #StandUp4HumanRights #HumanRightsDay

24.01.2022 Anxiety is part of our survival instinct. When we’re faced with a threatening situation, our brains and bodies respond by kicking into safety mode. Our adrenalin starts pumping, helping us get ready to escape the danger. However some people, including children, react more quickly or intensely to situations they find threatening, or find it harder to get their anxious feelings under control. Some kids also perceive the world to be scarier or more dangerous than others. Childre...n with anxiety difculties tend to lack condence in their abilities and feel overwhelmed easily. They are also driven to avoid the things that cause them anxiety, and in doing so, don’t get the chance to learn that what they fear will usually not happen. 22.01.2022 MODELING AND RECASTING Modeling is a strategy frequently used in speech therapy to teach or give examples for a speech or language target (for example a location concept or grammatical marker). Recasting is another strategy where we might repeat an error word or phrase back to our child but with the error corrected! ... Stay with me here.... Ineffective vs effective modeling and recasting: say - the dog is on the tree (child probably tunes out when we use say) no the DOGGGGG isn’t on the tree (exaggerated and unnatural model) it’s a dog not a dod (the child heard the error target twice!) the doddy is on the tree?? (no model was provided) the doggy is under the tree I see the doggy! There’s the doggy, he is under the big tree Look at the doggy, he’s under the tree! There the doggy is! The doggy is under the tree! It is really important to: aim for 12-18 recasts per minute practice the target 3-4 times each day use clear speech when modelling/recasting use appropriate vocabulary/grammar (avoiding telegraphic speech - more on this another day) keep the target consistent for the day TEACH DON’T TEST - how can your child learn the correct target if we haven’t taught them? 21.01.2022 IT’s TOUCHING!!!!!Oh my, how many times have we heard that as parents? . It’s a common complaint with toddlers and once it’s a thing it’s a BIG thing! Here...’s where to start if your child protests over food touching: . A small sample (about a teaspoon each) of the 2 to 3 foods on the mealtime plate is also in the smallest section in the far corner. If your child reaches for his cup with his right hand, put the samples in the left corner for less visual attention on the mix. . Model calm. It’s tempting to increase your energy & try to convince a toddler that this is FUN but honestly, the better sell is to just be cool. Oh yeah, those foods are just hanging out together, trying to get to know each other. . If your toddler decides to join in & introduce nugget to peas, again, be cool: You’re silly that’s a funny nugget voice! and just eat. Too much attention on the mix foods can really back fire, so just be cool about it smile & just eat. . Speaking of eating, try your best to not comment on eating anything out of that corner. Kids need to explore new mixes, even when they are barely touching, and it just takes time. Eventually they will take a taste on their own. . The first step is just allowing kids to get use to the idea of a few foods hanging out in the same small space. Once that goes well, you can add a few peas (for example) to one of the bigger sections. Go slowbe coolyou got this! . 20.01.2022 Theory of mind is the understanding that people don’t share the same thoughts and feelings as you do develops during childhood, and is called theory of mind. Another way to think about it is a child’s ability to tune-in to other peoples’ perspectives. During infancy and early childhood, children learn the early skills that they’ll need to develop their theory of mind later on. These skills include the ability to: * pay attention to people and copy them * recognize others’... emotions and use words to express them (happy, sad, mad) * know that they are different from other people and have different likes/dislikes from others * know that people act according to the things they want * understand the causes and consequences of emotions (If I throw my toy, mum will be mad) * pretend to be someone else (like a doctor or a cashier) when they play Children’s theory of mind continues to develop after age five. For the next few years they learn to predict what one person thinks or feels about what another person is thinking or feeling. They also begin to understand complex language that relies on theory of mind, such as lies, sarcasm, and figurative language (like it’s raining cats and dogs). Every time you interact with and talk to your child, you have an opportunity to put into words what you are both thinking and feeling! 17.01.2022 If you read one thing in the next 24hours, read this Welcome to Holland - By Emily Perl Kingsley When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like you’re planning a vacation to Italy. You’re all excited. You get a whole bunch of guidebooks, you learn a few phrases so you can get around, and then it comes time to pack your bags and head for the airport. ... Only when you land, the stewardess says, WELCOME TO HOLLAND. You look at one another in disbelief and shock, saying, HOLLAND? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I SIGNED UP FOR ITALY. But they explain that there’s been a change of plan, that you’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay. BUT I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HOLLAND! you say. ‘I DON’T WANT TO STAY! But stay, you do. You go out and buy some new guidebooks, you learn some new phrases, and you meet people you never knew existed. The important thing is that you are not in a bad place filled with despair. You’re simply in a different place than you had planned. It’s slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy, but after you’ve been there a little while and you have a chance to catch your breath, you begin to discover that Holland has windmills. Holland has tulips. Holland has Rembrandts. But everyone else you know is busy coming and going from Italy. They’re all bragging about what a great time they had there, and for the rest of your life, you’ll say, YES, THAT’S WHAT I HAD PLANNED. The pain of that will never go away. You have to accept that pain, because the loss of that dream, the loss of that plan, is a very, very significant loss. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to go to Italy, you will never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland.

02.01.2022 Why OTs are my favourite people! Occupational Therapists are wizards. Really, they are absolutely marvellous!! This diagram was once shown to me by an OT friend and it has been such a valuable resource when working with children with complex and multifaceted needs. It gave me a new lens as a speech pathologist. As speechies, our job is communication and feeing development. That’s our bread and butter. For a lot of the kids we see, they already have the foundation skills r...equired to build language. But what happens when we are referred a child who doesn’t have those skills? Have a look at this diagram - check out ALL the skills our OTs can help us to work on before we get up to learning about communication! Having deeper insight into the sensory/motor systems really helps to understand and educate why children do what they do and why, for some kids communication (and eating) can be SO tricky. When our little ones are growing their whole body is learning to work together which is why having an OT on board is so valuable. Better yet, working jointly with our amazing occupational therapists is a way to regulate these complex kids and get their bodies ready to learn. When we have this, we (speech pathologists) can build those communication blocks and support out children to better understand and express themselves! When we have this beautiful balance, magic happens! #speechtherapy #slp #speechpathology #slpeeps #speechlanguagepathology #slplife #earlyintervention #autism #speechlanguagepathologist #ot #occupationaltherapy #earlyintervention #childdevelopment #parenting #learningthroughplay #preschool #earlychildhoodeducation #kids #earlylearning #parentingtips #childcare #braindevelopment #playbasedlearning #play See more

01.01.2022 Choosing the best words for explicit vocabulary instruction can sometimes be challenging because texts include so many words whose meanings are unfamiliar or pa...rtially known. To help teachers select words for instruction, Isabel Beck and her colleagues developed the idea of sorting words into 3 categories or tiers with each tier characterizing a different ‘type’ of word with different practical applications. The words teachers choose to teach should also depend on a student’s grade level, background experience, and knowledge about the reading topic. Tier 1: Most students know these words Are basic, common vocabulary that children learn early (for example, sad, laugh, hot) Are important for high-risk learners, and ELs Are usually known by students with normal language development Tier 2: These words should be highlighted to teach explicitly. Are high frequency, yet more sophisticated and abstract than basic words (for example, avoid, fortunate, crafty) Are central to the meaning of the text Can be applied to discussions across many contexts and experiences Can be defined with other basic words already known (for example, fortunate can be defined with lucky and crafty can be defined with sly and smart) Should be taught in depth; aim to teach about 3-5 words per reading selection Tier 3: These words need only a brief definition in context before moving on. Are low frequency words, yet essential for understanding context Are likely to be found in text about specific topics (for example, bridle, reins, withers, mane) Can be instructed on the spot, when the need arises, using pictures or other contextual supports. The time spent teaching words to students will be invaluable to their growth as readers. Come back next week for more on vocabulary instruction!
