21.01.2022 Something all kids young and all can to do

21.01.2022 He isn’t talking yet, but he understands everything I say. Have you said this as a parent- or heard this as an SLP?? I hear it all the time! And it can... be hard to address with parents because the last thing I want to do is make them rethink this strength. But the truth is, two things pop into my head when I hear this statement: 1 If they can actually understand everything you say, that would be really atypical because even the most language advanced children for this age don’t understand everything! 2 I don’t think parents realize how complex of language kids should know at given ages (OR realize the nonverbal or environmental cues they give when they talk). And who can blame them because it took me a really long time to find these milestones- and they aren’t even all that exact with the huge age ranges! Reminder: Milestones are what 90% of kids can do by a certain age, so if your child is struggling with these skills by 3, a speech/language evaluation is likely needed. Check my feed for ages 1-2 which was shared yesterday, and I will share 3-4 tomorrow!
