18.01.2022 I prescribed "playing with clay" for one of my clients this week - her face lit up! I didn't use the standard Theraputty because she was missing her art, overwhelmed and didn't know where to start to reclaim part of her lost identity. So why don't we do more of this as OT's? Clay is firm enough to give a therapeutic workout for the hand muscles and we can easily grade the task. It has the added benefit of being made into a meaningful item, and can demonstrate the clients' progress in their rehabilitation. I feel this brings us back to the core of OT through the use of meaningful occupation for therapeutic benefit.

04.01.2022 Been pondering lately about the link between Good Health and Occupation... see, health is our ability to ADAPT in the face of social, physical and emotional challenges... and adapt SO WELL that we are fulfilled with a sense of wellbeing. Well... these are times that certainly are challenging our social lives, we have massive limitations on our capacity for our usual physical fitness regimes, and the challenges to school our children whilst juggling work from home just adds t...o the stress. So please, don’t feel like you should be coping marvellously well - you are is being stretched in every direction... This is the time where it is important to cue in to what your body is suggesting you do - ie: take a bath instead of binging on 2 more episodes of Tiger King... or go for an extra long walk with the dog when you can’t find the computer mouse.... it’s time to give yourself time to decompress at the end of the day... and if you have an abundance of time on your hands suddenly, and no money to spend on leisure pursuits because you’re broke and waiting for Centrelink to process your claim, perhaps it’s time to reflect on what cheapo project you could turn your hand to. For me, I have found investing time each day in calming and grounding activities like sewing (see #visiblemending pic), gardening (weeding, planting seeds, squishing caterpillars), walking, and some artistic pursuits (a $15 ipad app is money well spent IMHO). Engaging in these activities has been incredibly helpful in maintaining my resilience. If you want to chat about this more, I’m always available! This is OT land, I’m very happy here. Big hugs xoC
