20.01.2022 Is it just me that likes do emergency stops in the rain??? Great job Lis! Gareth

19.01.2022 SHADOW RIDERS! I really like it when students have their own bike and can get out and practise the things I teach with their shadow. Whether that be a partner, parent, friend or a new friend from a Facebook group that’s in place to put inexperienced people with more experience riders. However, a shadow is just that, not an instructor. Someone to enable you to legally ride on the road and practice what you’ve been taught.... I’m hearing more and more from students saying they’re on a shadow group and went for a ride with this person or that person, and they’ve been asked to do things they’re not comfortable with. A lot of times a student will ride one of our bikes for lessons and then practice on their own bike, which will weigh more and potentially have different options. In my job I need to get students to do extreme manoeuvres, slow speed riding and emergency stops. These are all useful skills, a requirement in the test and something that has to be approached very carefully so as not to endanger students, the public and people’s bikes. We start small and work our way up to test standards to minimise risk as best we can. When a student comes to me and tells me a shadow made them do an emergency stop, in the wet, on a heavy bike with no ABS, when they didn’t want to do it...somethings wrong! Yes, they should be able to do it, and it’s my job to teach that stuff. But at their pace, at the right time and in the right place. I encourage people to find shadows and ride with them; but I also warn of shadows trying to teach! If they want to be an instructor, they should find out what’s required, get the training, learn the skills and do the job. Most people have the best intentions, but having a shadow tell my students, you need to do this and that (which goes against what I teach) is not a good thing. I teach what I teach and I can back all of it up with logic and reason. If I don’t believe in something I won’t teach it. I post videos online of students doing specific things that are required for the test as well as going above and beyond to improve their riding. If you want to see how it’s done, check those, not some wannabe who thinks he knows what the DOT want. Actively encouraging learners to ride without a shadow is something else I’ve heard being done from a shadow, from a Facebook group. Stating this fine and that rule. Shadowing riders on r class bikes when they’re not entitled to shadow them is another one. Unfortunately, if you’re with someone who says they’re good to shadow you and they’re not. You’re breaking the law and you will be prosecuted, not them! You put your bike down doing something they ask you to do, you pay the bill, not them. Be careful out there people, ask to see your shadows license before you ride with them if you like. Most of all, have fun and ride safe! Gareth

19.01.2022 Great start to the week for team Gibbos and for Zac. First time R class pass in Mandurah this afternoon. Despite Zac riding really well he was concerned about coming to the test centre on his GSXR1000. It’s not about the bikes mate, it’s how you ride it. Having said that, it has to be one of the loudest road bikes I’ve instructed! Great job Zac, good luck with the other thing too mate. Ride safe.... Gareth and the Gibbos team. See more
