20.01.2022 If you're heading away these holidays, it's safest to leave your dog at home. We regularly carry out baiting across conservation land around the State to con...trol introduced predators such as foxes and feral cats, and these baits can be very attractive to pets. Baiting is an important part of our wildlife recovery efforts to protect threatened native species. Without the use of baits, the risk of extinction would be increased for many species such as the numbat, woylie, western swamp tortoise and western ground parrot. Find out more about the Western Shield wildlife recovery program and the areas we bait www.pws.dbca.wa.gov.au/westernshield Or to find out you where can take your dog safely, visit www.exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au/know/pets-parks

18.01.2022 AIRLINE PILOTS HEAD BUSH TO WORK International airline pilots are being retrained to operate harvest machinery to help address a shortage of farm workers du...e to strict border restrictions preventing international and interstate labour from entering the state. "We surveyed the WA grain industry and came up with a shortage of over 1,000 machinery operators," agricultural trainer Ley Webster, who typically upskills backpackers and itinerant workers, said. This year Ms Webster has trained nine pilots in operating a combine harvester. All of them have been indefinitely stood down and are adapting to a slower pace in a new cockpit. 18.01.2022 The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has received recent reports of the weed lesser loosestrife and livestock deaths from annual ryegrass toxicity (ARGT) in the agricultural region. The rainfall has also increased the risk of Barber’s pole, brown stomach and black worms, which could become a problem for weaners and hoggets over summer.

14.01.2022 RABBITS & MOSQUITO'S This year the Shire of Cranbrook and The Gillamii Centre Inc. are collaborating in an effort to combat the spread of rabbits in the Cranbro...ok, Frankland River and Tenterden town sites. In order for the us to undertake this project we have released a virus that is transmitted through mosquito's, while this virus is harmless to humans it will have an effect and degrade the numbers of feral rabbits. This means that we will not be undertaking our fogging as early as we have done in previous years. The Shire will conduct spasmodic fogging over the coming weeks and will have our fogging program up and running as soon as possible. If you have any queries, please contact the Shire’s Manager of Works or the Shire’s Ranger on 9826 1008

06.01.2022 "This very late season rainfall creates the perfect environment for a beetle population explosion in crop residues. As they run out of green plants, shrub seedlings become the next most attractive option. It’s an uncommon event but can be devastating for establishing shrubs." - Hayley Norman CSIRO
