20.01.2022 Today is world Gum Health Day. Bleeding gums are never good. They can be an early sign of much deeper gum problems that eventually cause your teeth or implants to fall out. A basic periodontal screening is part of your normal dental check up and should be performed every time. Talk to your Periodontist, Hygienist or Dentist about the results of your screening to see whether you need more comprehensive care. Your bleeding score should be 10% or less to be considered healthy.... What is your score? There are simple things you can do such as floss, brush, reduce your BMI and eat a diet based on food from natural sources. Stress can also be a major driver of gum inflammation, but thats a conversation for another post This world gum heath day the message is simple, say no to bleeding gums. I’m still coming to terms with the photos, but what better way to launch them publicly than by raising awareness about #ovariancancer. It’s also a time to reflect on the blessing of current good health and a reminder to remain vigilant in our health checks, both dental and medical. 1 woman dies from ovarian cancer every 8 hours. Sadly, only 46% of women who are diagno...sed with #ovariancancer survive beyond 5 years. Each year Western Periodontics sends an email of thanks to our referring dentists and suppliers. The money saved on branded Christmas cards with a limited shelf life gets donated to a charity. 11.01.2022 One of the best parts of being a specialist is delving in to the ins and outs of new toys. I loved hanging with colleagues and chatting all things laser this afternoon. We ablated just the shell of an egg leaving the membrane inside intact. Then fiddled the Hz and wattage on the laser to play with incision depths, rate of cut, material changes and all the other variables of laser dentistry on a raw T-bone steak . Despite the excitement, the health and safety of our staff, patients and our families is still of utmost importance. So there are just a few small changes which will be hanging around. We will be asking every patient some screening questions. Social distancing will apply in reception, with the option to be called in to your appointment straight from your car. We will... still be getting the hand sanitiser out for everyone, before and after every appointment. You still need a pre-operative mouthwash before we can really jump back in to your mouth. Apart from that we cant wait to see you with no limits on treatment for healthy patients. 06.01.2022 All I want for Chrith-math is my two front teeth My youngest daughter had an altercation with a trampoline (dont ask) which resulted in the extraction of 6 front teeth. This happened more than 15 months ago. Weve been waiting and waiting for the permanent teeth to erupt so she could get back to eating normally and having teeth in that beautiful smile of hers. Finally mummy got fed up so with a few drops of local anaesthetic, and a wave of the magic diode laser, voila! Teeth, just in time for Christmas. 03.01.2022 Did you know teeth are joined to the jaw bone by a ligament? Inflammation of the tooth ligament (also known as the periodontal ligament) is called gum disease (or periodontal disease). For all over general health we love training and keeping fit, but with sprains and strains we seek professional help before loading up on the weights again. Its the same with your teeth and periodontal ligaments. If you start loading your teeth (by clenching, grinding, orthodontic appliances ...or sometimes just normal function) while there is an inflamed periodontal ligament, you will accelerate damage and breakdown in your mouth. Unfortunately theres is often no pain in your periodontal ligament until its too late to treat. Over time this can mean your teeth might get loose and wobbly, then fall out. A Periodontist can make sure your teeth and gums are in tip top health. We are like personal trainers for your mouth so you can stay healthy and strong inside and out. 01.01.2022 All hard surfaces which are left in a wet environment develop a biofilm. Given enough time the biofilm becomes complex and firmly fastened, as well as calcified. This is exactly what happens on your teeth. We call the calcified biofilm calculus, or tartar. If you dont remove it, the bone and ligaments holding your teeth in start to breakdown. This is gum disease.
