19.01.2022 Winter Lawn Care Tips! Leaves During autumn and winter your lawn needs as much sunlight as possible. Make sure that leaves dropped from deciduous trees and lawn clippings are kept to an absolute minimum. Leaves left on your lawn will often lead to killing off areas of grass by starving it of air and sunlight.... Mower cutting heights During the cooler months, grass grows much slower, so it's a good idea to raise your cutting height a little so as not to damage it. As a general rule, it's wise not to cut your grass lower than 2.5cm. The big risk of mowing low is 'scalping' which browns your grass. Scalp your lawn repeatedly and you risk weakening it, allowing more weeds and diseases to take hold. How often to mow In winter lawn growth will decrease substantially. As a guide, your lawn should only need to be mowed around once every three or four weeks. Growing rates can vary between different grass types such as Couch and Kikuyu, but we recommend that your lawn height doesnt exceed 5-6cm as your lawn may become stalky and far less pleasing on the eye. Aerate of extra O2 If your lawn has had a big workout over summer with increased temperatures and loads of foot traffic, theres a good chance that the soil has been heavily compacted and is restricting the movement of water and oxygen throughout your lawn. Sowing seeds If your lawn is a bit patchy and lacking in some areas, the colder months are the perfect time for seed germination without weeds impeding. Aeration will also help with the germination process. Feed up for winter Just because your lawn's productivity decreases over winter doesnt mean that your lawn loses its hunger for nutrients. Try to seek out a fertiliser which supplies the correct balance of the three major nutrients required for a healthy lawn with uniform growth. A good mix of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is ideal. A good last soak Before the harsh effects of winter kick in, it is a good idea to give your lawn one good last drink. This will also help to activate lawn fertilisers.

03.01.2022 Spring Gardening Tips: If you don't have the time to complete these please call Michael for a free quote. Mob: 0431 418 221... Weed the Garden Spring is the perfect time to get a head start on weeds. Remove them now and you won't have a "weed garden" in summer. You may have to do a little weeding, but if you get rid of weeds now, they won't spread. Fertilise Use a good quality fertiliser or start a compost heap to create nutrient rich fertiliser. The garden will thank you by producing green plants and brilliantly coloured flowers. Mulch Mulch helps the garden retain water. It is also a great way to keep weeds down. Take Care of the Lawn Weed the lawn, but also consider aerating the soil. The lawn soil can become compacted over the winter months. That makes it difficult for water to penetrate the soil and reach the roots. Finally, fertilise the lawn. Your lawn will thrive through the summer months and the water you use won't be wasted. Spring is Planting Time Late September is a great time to plant. Seeds will grow and take cuttings from plants you love and expand your garden. Start a Veggie Garden Spring is an ideal time to start growing a veggie garden. In frost-prone areas, wait until October, when there is less danger of frost. Watch out for Pests Pests can come at all times of the year, but many of them prefer the warmer months. Regular maintenance will keep your garden happy and looking good! 03.01.2022 Great time of year to prune boundaries and away from the house

03.01.2022 Winter Planting & Maintenance Garden Guide PLANTING Even though the soil is cold, Winter is the season to plant bare-rooted trees and shrubs, including fruit trees, while they are dormant. Garden centres will be full of stock from late June right through to early Spring. Some flower and vegetable seedlings can also go in now. Here's a few suggestions: The flower garden:... Bare root roses and deciduous trees and shrubs. Seedlings of Iceland poppy, cineraria, calendula, pansy and viola. Camellias, daphnes, magnolias and wattles bloom from mid to late Winter. The vegetable patch: Kohlrabi, carrot, leeks, sweet potato, cabbage in warmer areasb. When it's too cold to garden outside in the vegetable patch, trying growing some vegetables and herbs in pots. FEEDING While most of the garden 'goes to sleep' over Winter, vegetables, bulbs and annuals flowering or cropping now will benefit from an occasional application of plant food. Garden beds: Fertilise Winter flowering bulbs. Continue feeding all bulbs after flowering has finished to ensure strong bulbs for next year. Fertilise leafy Winter vegetables. Lawns: We do not generally recommend fertilising lawns over Winter because most grasses are either dormant or making very little growth. However, an application of Lawn Builder may help amend poor soil and have your grass bouncing back quicker and greener next spring. PRUNING Winter is pruning time for most trees and shrubs. LAWN CARE Watch for signs of water-logging over Winter, especially after heavy rain. If required, aerate to allow excess water to soak into the soil. An application of Lawn Builder may help amend poor soil and have your grass bouncing back quicker and greener next spring. Call for a free quote.
