23.01.2022 Some of the Fenwick Farm Race Horses

21.01.2022 ' ___________________________________ Admittedly, I have a bit of a soft spot for senior pets, for me they are the epito...me of loyalty. I just love their frosted little faces, and soulful eyes. There is just something so beautiful about a lifelong relationship shared between a human and a dog. Through the highs and the lows, through the seasons and the years, the relationship we share with our pets is one that we truly treasure, and sadly one that doesn't last long enough. So what if we had the power, the knowledge and ability to change that? What if we could make simple everyday changes, and grow healthier, and longer living pets? You're probably thinking it sounds too good to be true, right? But there is a man and his dog who have done just so. Meet Brian McLaren, the dairy farmer from country Victoria, and Maggie the 30 year old Kelpie! That's right, 30 years old, just let that sink in for a moment.... We are doing well if our pets make it into their late teens. So just how did the two of them achieve this amazing feat, and grow the world's oldest dog? In an interview I watched recently, Brian McLaren talks about the life he shared with his much loved kelpie, and reveals some of their secrets. Living on a dairy farm you can just imagine the kind of diet and lifestyle Maggie would have enjoyed. She was up bright and early to help Brian bring in the cows for milking, every morning and every night, 365 days of the year. Maggie lived out her days enjoying life to the full, running in the paddocks, eating farm fresh foods, swimming in the dam, and spending all day with the one she loved the most. This resulted in Maggie living a very long, happy and healthy life. No doubt, we all want to grow healthier pets, so what were some of Brian's secrets to creating the world's longest living dog? Let me share with you some of the highlights and take home points from the interview. # - Maggie ran up to 20km a day, following Brian to and from the paddocks bringing in the cows. # . Exercise reduces the risk of cancer, helps to keep joints mobile, improves heart health, creates stronger muscles and bones, lowers blood pressure, decreases stress, reduces weight and inflammation, just to name a few. Exercise was probably Maggie's biggest secret, and contributing factor to her health and longevity. https://animalwellnessmagazine.com/importance-of-exercise-/ # & - Brian said in the interview that Maggie was a very easy going, quiet and relaxed dog who didn't bark much. She was a farm dog who had a job to do, she was his best friend and spent her days by his side, never saw a collar and never saw a chain. She had ample mental enrichment and physical stimulation, all of which no doubt helped to create a zen dog. # . A new study shows that stressed owners have stressed dogs. For a dog their owner is the biggest part of their everyday life, so when we come home stressed or anxious our dogs pick up on that and they absorb our emotions. Dogs can read the subtle changes in our body language and smell our emotions, they continually take in this information and respond accordingly. When we look closely at our lifestyle and consider our dogs everyday environment, are there any areas where we can make adjustments to make life more enjoyable for them? Can we spend more time with our pets, provide them with more enrichment and mental simulation and give them their own safe place to relax in the home? A zen dog is a happy dog. https://www.earth.com/news/your-dog-feel-stress/ # ' / - In all her 30 years of life Maggie only ever went to the vet twice. Once when she was a puppy to receive her first and only dose of vaccinations and again when she was 10-12 years old to be spayed. # . Research shows that vaccines and immunity lasts a lot longer than a year, yet vets continue to vaccinate annually. According to Dr. Ronald Schultz "vaccines for diseases like distemper and canine parvovirus, once administered to adult animals, provide lifetime immunity". Also when it comes to spaying and neutering, emerging research shows that waiting until pets are at least 1 or preferably 2 years of age is beneficial, and reduces the risks of multiple health issues that are associated with an early spay/neuter. https://www.facebook.com/PlanetPaws.ca/videos/1404799696261575/ https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/health-risks-of-earl/ # , & - Maggie was not routinely given unnecessary chemicals or medications. She was only ever wormed when the need arose. # . If you live in a low risk area or have indoor pets, is it really necessary to give them monthly tick and flea prevention? Can you give their bodies a break from the chemical load by using parasite prevention sparingly or look for a more natural alternative? Or could you reduce the amount of cleaning chemicals you use in your home and garden? https://www.facebook.com/765632866837589/posts/2102593756474820/ # - Living on a farm meant that Maggie had access to fresh farm foods on a daily basis. She was fed a variety of foods such as, raw meat from butchered lambs, mince, leftovers from the dinner table, still born calves, bones, vegetables and raw milk from the dairy. # . Food is said to be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison. What we choose to put into our pets bodies will ultimately impact their health and longevity. https://www.google.com//04/01/amp/raw-food-diet-part-1.aspx https://www.facebook.com/101265721240229/posts/121559895877478/ To watch the full interview from Brian about Maggie follow the link below. https://worldsoldestdog.planetpaws.ca/
