Megan and Anthony Elliott’s son Max, is an inspiring young man with autism and a complex language disability. His disability has created many challenges across his life, which often means he cannot do the same things as everyone else. Max often felt isolated from social activities and found it difficult to create friendship groups as he was growing up. The Elliott’s family’s dream was to create an inclusive community where girls, boys and young people, just like Max, felt valued and can live their best life. The Elliott's formed our envisioning GingerCloud Foundation. With support from the rugby community they developed a world first Modified Rugby Program (MRP) to help create connections, long-term bonds, and friendship for young people like Max and their families within their local rugby club community. On Saturday, 3 May 2014 eight young people with Autism or other learning and perceptual disabilities, with the support of eight PlayerMentors, ran on field for their first game of rugby at Brothers Rugby Club. Seven years on and GingerCloud’s Modified Rugby Program as grown to 325 Players, PlayerMentors and Coaches in 33 teams across 13 clubs in Queensland and the ACT. 18.01.2022 Celebrating our GingerCloud MRP Mums!! Linda and son Lucas. When did you join the GingerCloud MRP Community? We joined the MRP community in 2017. This will be our 5th year.... What are the challenges as mum of a child with Autism, Aspergers or learning and perceptual disabilities have you experienced? Challenges we have had are isolation and understanding these are probably the two largest challenges. Finding friends for our son, and a place where he feels successful and a sense of belonging. How has GingerCloud MRP benefited you as a mother? GingerCloud MRP provides such an important space to relax and enjoy our son being happy. It brings back the hope that Lucas will have friends/peers who understand him. It’s a place where all the stresses disappear for an hour because it doesn’t’ matter if Lucas is just Lucas, everyone completely understands without explanation. That smile during every game reminds us that all the hard work pays off even if it’s only for an hour of happiness he is happy. What do you hope for your child’s future? 15.01.2022 Hi! My name is Stephanie, I am 19 years old and I am currently in my last year of Law at Bond University. I have been involved with MRP for a number of years now, helping out at carnivals and other MRP and GingerCloud events. As I was on the Gold Coast after finishing school in Toowoomba, I was unable to be involved with a specific club as there are not any on the GC. However, as I have now moved to Brisbane, I am super excited to be coaching at West’s this year! It has been... so wonderful being involved with MRP and meeting so many incredibly people from all-over South-East Queensland. I am also lucky enough to be a support worker for several players that are involved in the program and I would not have had this opportunity were it not for the wonderful community that MRP has created. I love seeing the players smiling faces every game, and the joy that they have in participating. My goal for this year is to ensure that every one of my players feels welcomed, cared for and most importantly has the most amazing time meeting other people and getting involved with sport. One of the wonderful, unexpected outcomes for me has been to connect with Los Angeles - based Libby Gill, keynote speaker, executive coach and award winner author.... Libbys passion is to support organisations to create hope-driven leaders and never before has understanding the power of hope been so critical. The quote that weve shared today is a recent one from Libbys Instagram page @libbygill_co Libbys most recent book The Hope-Driven Leader, is such a great read as our country is starting to come out the other side (a phrase we hear often from our Prime Minister) and whilst Ive read it before, Im re-reading now. From March this year, we have 2 Allied Health positions available across our Toowoomba Clubs for 2 hours per week for 12 weeks including Saturday mornings for an hour. 03.01.2022 COVID 19 (Coronavirus) Update! In terms of COVID 19 and GingerCloud Foundations Modified Rugby Program (MRP) activities this season, we are in regular contact with Rugby Australia (RA) and will follow their advice in terms of Club rugby activities this season. From a GingerCloud perspective and based on the current health advice, if your child is unwell during the MRP season, please wait until they are well to bring them back to training and games.... Importantly, in the event that your childs school is closed due to a positive test, it is important to follow Health advice to self-isolate MRP Players and PlayerMentors for 2 weeks. We are also instructing our Coaches to adopt specific methods to clean MRP equipment, in line with industry sanitisation guidelines. Please refer to this afternoons newsletter for more information. 01.01.2022 I am really excited to be joining GingerCloud this year as Allied Health Advisor to the Modified Rugby Program (MRP). I am an Occupational Therapist and also Mum to an MRP player so I have seen first-hand how the MRP is amazing at supporting and getting our kids into Rugby. This year, the MRP is undertaking a pilot where we are going to place Allied Health Consultants into a number of our Brisbane, Toowoomba and Townsville clubs. The pilot will be aimed at improving MRP pro...cesses that support our MRP Players and PlayerMentors to have the best possible experience playing Rugby through use of a MRP Player-centred assessment tool. I will be working with the Allied Health Consultants who you will most likely see in these clubs at training and games. I look forward to updating you further on what is happening in the Allied Health space within the MRP across the 2020 season.
