16.01.2022 Sensei Thomas Roxburgh You can never climb a smooth mountain. There will be bumps and valleys on the way, to help you climb to the top I started martial arts in 2001 after Jason David Frank (the Green Power Ranger) came to the dojo and did a seminar. At the time I was extremely shy due to having a moderate to severe hearing loss, which made comprehending what was going on around me very difficult. At the end of the seminar, a fellow ginger, Shihan Graham McDonnell, caught ...my attention and signed me up and I have been in awe of martial arts ever since. The first few lessons were quite a struggle. I remember my Dad bringing me to the dojo for my first lesson and trying to get me through the front door. I had grabbed onto the door frame with both hands and wasn’t going anywhere. Kyoshi Sean took my first lesson outside in the driveway of the Greenwood dojo. My second lesson was with Shihan Graham up in the top area of Dojo 2. My confidence eventually grew more and more as I rose through the ranks, until I had my first major setback at green belt. I had fainted during the bow out of the class and was embarrassed to come back to training. Sensei Stu Bott and Shihan Graham had sent me postcards and I also came in and had a one on one pep talk with both of them. To my surprise they both told me of the times that they had struggled in martial arts due to injury. This changed the way that I had viewed martial arts and life at the time. I started to think to myself you can’t change what’s happened in the past, you can only change the future. After I had achieved my junior 2nd degree rank I was offered the opportunity to assist and instruct. It took me a few years to settle in and figure out how to interact with the kids. I found speaking to adults the hardest part of the job (being the young kid on the block). The instructing definitely pushed me outside of my comfort zone, but it gave me the confidence to try new things like Muay Thai fights, training with weapons and other sports and life skills. One of my proudest moments in martial arts was when I had completed my transition from junior 3rd degree and re-graded all the major ranks to senior 3rd degree. During the 5 year process of re-doing my gradings, I had grown stronger physically and mentally, but in a way I had completed the kid ranks and finally become an adult in martial arts. The past 17 years have definitely passed by quickly, but the most satisfying part of the job is seeing the students work hard and achieving their ranks. The other satisfying part of martial arts is the relationships you build with the students, parents and in a sense, the community as well. I look forward to all my future challenges and endeavours and hope to still keep impacting the community in a positive way.
