24.01.2022 A pretty interesting way to make your social media images stand out.

23.01.2022 It's been a hectic couple of weeks! With the end of the super-tight COVID restrictions came a huge rush in demand for videos & photography... we've been flat-stick for a while now working on all sorts of exciting projects around Ballarat and the Central Highlands. Emma and I did manage to get away for a weekend though, to celebrate our 20th (TWENTIETH!!!!) wedding anniversary - a night in Geelong with a posh dinner and then a drive down the Bellarine Peninsular, a ferry-ride and then up the Mornington Peninsular and home... plus a I bought Emma a beautiful necklace by local Ballarat designer, Rachel Grose. Did I mention that Emma is the most beautiful, kind, tolerant, supportive and clever spouse and business partner I could ever hope to have found in life? Well she is.

22.01.2022 I've been taking the chance to get out and explore some of the bushland around Ballarat with my trusty old Canon. I'm in awe of this beautiful tree on the side of Mount Buninyong - not only huge but also gorgeous. I guess there would have been a lot of huge trees like this around Ballarat once upon a time. Anyone know what type of tree it is?

21.01.2022 Whew! This page showcasing a series of short films that we made in 2019 has just been published. It was privilege to work with many people at various Neighbourhood Houses in the Ballarat region and to be told their moving stories in their own words. We hope we've done them justice. Take a moment to enjoy one or two of them or take a few moments and watch the whole lot - we're pretty sure you'll love them. Happy New Year! https://www.ginkgoproductions.com.au/our-wo/2019//29/chanh #shortfilm #filmmaking #socialmediamarketing #socialmediavideo #videomarketing

21.01.2022 Can you ever have too much of gum-trees at sunset? Coming back home late in the day after filming a project in Charlton yesterday... I just had to stop for this beautiful evening light.

20.01.2022 I was stoked to have the opportunity to film and produce this music video put together by VACSAL (Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Ltd) recently. I got to work with a great bunch of musicians and some really mature & thoughtful young people for a vital cause - mental health and suicide in the indigenous community. It's a response to an extremely high rate of youth suicide in the indigenous community - this is completely unacceptable and we need more of the...se kinds of grassroots initiatives to help people through tough times. I was shocked to learn that suicide is the no. 1 cause of death for Australians between the age of 15 and 44. Let that sink in... 75% of those who take their own life are male. And the suicide rate in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is twice that of their non-Indigenous counterparts. Truly another deadly epidemic of massive proportions that needs to be addressed urgently. See more

17.01.2022 Who said Ballarat winters are terrible? Lake Burrumbeet was looking pretty good yesterday - freakishly still and sunny for this time of year.

16.01.2022 Guitarist Vincent Emanuel having a laugh between takes during our filming for A Message For Young and Old. This was a music video we produced for the Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Ltd. - it was the brain-child of Tony Lovett and was created as a message of encouragement and hope for the all the young indigenous Australians struggling with their mental health during the COVID lockdown. I had all the lights rigged up and had been filming pretty much this shot in video... He didn't know I was taking his photo until he heard the camera clicking and he was like "what?" and I was like "yeah" and he was like "huh?"

16.01.2022 Sunset with buloke trees at St Helens Plains in the Wimmera. Watching the sunset over these plains in the company of some of the finest trees around is a magical experience. Doing it in bare feet makes it even better somehow. Put it on your bucket list! If you're in the Ballarat region, the Wimmera's not too far and the weather is a lot warmer.

16.01.2022 "If you get a cat, remember it's your cat. I don't want a cat. " - Emma (1 week before this was taken) . Marketing maestro Emma, who can also be found at @retroeventsmarketing trying to get some work done with Waif, the studio cat. This is from July when Waif had just come to live with us - we couldn't decide wether to call her Waif (like the magical dog from "House of Many Ways" by Dianna Wynne Jones) or Jiji (after the cat from "Kiki's Delivery Service"). We settled on Waif because our son Seb, really hates that particular Studio Ghibli movie! Has anyone else out there actually ever heard of, or even read "House of Many Ways?" I think it's one of the most under-appreciated children's books in existence. Let me know if you have any idea what I'm talking about!

15.01.2022 Here's a great film that's premiering tonight on Facebook. I was lucky to be given the opportunity to help out with some of the photography on this one. I haven't had a peak at the finished product myself yet, but I know the Producer Caden Pearson and the Director Jessica Kneip have put their heart and soul into it. It's going to be an absolute corker. Check it out - you'll be glad you did!

13.01.2022 Me: Do you like my new lens puss? It's a Leica Mount Minolta 40mm F2. Waif: Well, I'm glad you asked. Actually, I particularly love it's sharpness wide open so you can get stuff in the background that's quite close to me all soft and fuzzy and out of focus while still keeping my eyes crispy sharp. Me: Cheers Waif, glad you noticed! I'm looking forward to trying it on some video interviews.... Waif: Love your work J.

13.01.2022 Sometimes things aren't black & white...and sometimes they are! Here's an image of a poppy I found growing as a weed on the side of the Yarrowee Creek path a couple of weeks ago. In a vase, on my dining table it looked a million bucks!

12.01.2022 Free Tibet activists hug outside the Chinese consulate in Toorak in 2008. I dug this one out of the archive from over 10 years ago. This picture was a milestone for me - it was the picture that made me realise the power of photography to tell meaningful stories. I'd turned up at this event to get some photos for the newspaper I was working for at the time. I expected it to be a small, routine demonstration with a few speeches and some chanting and then everyone would go home.... How surprised was I when some of the protestors started throwing themselves at the police? They were shouting and crying and it was seriously emotional for them as they had family members in prison in China. The police brought in the horses and it all got very intense. I empathised deeply with their worry about their missing family members and got pretty emotional myself. Most of the photos turned out a bit meh, but this one distilled perfectly the way it felt being there that day. See more

12.01.2022 Wheeewwwwww! I've just completed the mammoth task of updating and organising our Youtube channel. Pop over and have a squiz if you've got some time on your hands!

11.01.2022 A cloudy, windy and warm weekend hike in Gariwerd. I’ve been visiting Hollow Mountain and Mt Stapylton since I was a kid but still find them completely enchanting.

10.01.2022 Wow! It was great to see this in the local paper this morning. Fantastic that the song and it's message is getting out and about.

10.01.2022 This is a standard morning of epic struggle between my two charming pets. Life and death stuff, this is. (No animals were hurt in the filming of this movie. My cat bit me on the knee though. I'll be okay.)

09.01.2022 It's amazing some the of the interesting and quirky ways people are adapting to life in iso! We were really lucky to be given the opportunity to produce this little film with Creative Ballarat, working within the restrictions of the whole Covid-19 situation. So.... what better way to make a film than to incorporate into getting some exercise! We've been loving the way people are getting out into the street and exercising by cycling, walking and running - it feels like it's the 80s again! Justin Hayward wrote and performed the beautiful poem that forms the backbone of this little number, and Garth Horsfield composed the hauntingly lovely music that sets the mood. We'd love to hear what you think of our project - feel free to let us know in the comments or even better, help us let more people see it... and share it on your own page!

08.01.2022 My best, most productive working days start with an early bike ride. I'm pretty darned lucky living in Ballarat because I have Woowookarung Regional Park just 10 minutes from my house. It has beautiful native bush filled with peppermint gums and grass trees and heaps of native flowers - and it's riddled with quiet gravel roads and single track. It's a wonderful place to get out into nature and just hit reset on my mind before a busy working day.

07.01.2022 View from inside Ebenezer Mission near Antwerp in the Wimmera. I've been keeping pretty busy lately working a video project with #retroeventsmarketing for the Ballarat & District Aboriginal Co-op. It's got me thinking about aboriginal history and racism in Australia. I though it might be a good time to share this picture I took several years ago on a road trip. Ebenezer was established in 1859 by the Moravian Church on the land of the Wotjobaluk people with the aim of civilising and christianising them. Unfortunately, we know lots of crappy stuff happened at the missions - if you don't know what I mean, watch the movie "Rabbit Proof Fence" to get an idea. It's pretty eerie wandering around that lonely place, all empty and dusty in the middle of nowhere - you can't help but hear echoes of the past.

04.01.2022 Live online performances from the heart of Ballarat, Victoria. With rich culture and history, our local performers and musicians will focus on different tales e...very week. Love, Ballarat Support our actors, event staff and musicians and buy tickets to our performances here! https://events.humanitix.com/organ/5eabe18d74f2ce0007864433

02.01.2022 We just spent a couple of days down at Port Campbell. The coastline down there is pretty special, and even more special when you can see it without hoards of tourists. It was incredibly quiet and empty - which is what it's all about really. Magic. It was cloudy and rainy both days but I was lucky enough to have my camera ready when this tiny patch of solar illumination briefly graced the beach.

02.01.2022 In search of simplicity at Lake Burrumbeet on a clear still day. #lakeburrumbeet #ballarat #ballaratfotoday #ballaratlife #ballaratbusiness #ballaratfoto #minimalism #simplicity #creativity #filmmaking #filmmakers #filmmakerslife #filmmakinglife #filmmakersofinstagram #filmmakerscommunity #visualstorytelling #visualstoryteller

02.01.2022 Mount Warrenheip sandwiched between a clear blue sky and sun-bleached paddocks of crispy grass - a classic summer scene in Ballarat. When out roaming the countryside on my bike, I see Mount Warrenheip from many different angles and it's always gorgeous. It's actually an inactive Scoria Cone - basically a volcanic hill made of lava and ash. The last time Mount Warrenheip erupted was around 1 million years ago though, so I think Ballarat is safe enough. For now...

01.01.2022 Two of the creative ladies from painting classes at the Ballarat North Neighbourhood House talking quinces. We were lucky enough to attend (and film) the class last year for a series of short films we made about Neighbourhood Houses in our part of the world - it was a relaxing little bubble filled with creativity, chatting and laughter... and cups of tea. Heaven! See the film here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vox8RsxowYw&feature=emb_logo

01.01.2022 Here's a film we made recently, helping out Retro Events & Marketing as part of a package for Latrobe Community Health Service. One of the things Emma and I love about the work we do (other than telling amazing stories through video, photography, websites and events) is the great people we constantly get to meet - people with interesting stories & eye-opening life experience, and who are striving everyday to make the world a better place the best way they know how. https://fb.watch/2o-6flcrYf/
