18.01.2022 Following on from the last post: If you have diagnosed Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and are trialling a low FODMAP diet then listen up, today we are talking about Polyols, the ‘P’ component of the FODMAP acronym. Polyols are sugar alcohols that include sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol and maltitol. Polyols are found naturally in some fruits and vegetable, and can be added to food as a sweetener e.g. sugar free chewing gum, mints and lollies. ... Sorbitol is commonly found in: apples, pears, avocado and stone fruit. Mannitol is commonly found in: mushrooms, cauliflower and snow peas. Polyols are absorbed slowly in the small intestine. Similar to fructose, excess polyol consumption may attract water into the small intestine resulting in distension (expansion of the gut). Polyols that are not absorbed in the small intestine will enter the large intestine where they are fermented by bacteria resulting in gas production, bloating and altered bowel habits. If you have IBS, modifying your polyol intake may improve your symptoms. Book an appointment with our Accredited Practicing Dietitian to help you navigate through the low FODMAP diet and determine your individual tolerance levels, so you can follow the least restrictive diet possible

14.01.2022 Are you following the low FODMAP diet? If so, are you finding it tricky to think of meal and snack ideas? Or maybe you’re sick of eating the same low FODMAP meals every day and want to try something new?... Monash University has a great range of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks - just click on the link below for recipe inspiration! https://www.monashfodmap.com//monash-low-fodmap-recipe-in/

13.01.2022 Phase 2: Reintroduction of FODMAPs Have you recently completed the elimination phase of the low FODMAP diet? Have you experienced improvement in your IBS symptoms? If the answer is yes then it may be time to begin reintroducing FODMAPs. This phase of the diet can be daunting, so it is important to complete under the guidance of an experienced Dietitian. Why is it important to reintroduce FODMAPs? ... - Learn your specific triggers by understanding your own level of tolerance to each of the FODMAP sub groups (fructose, lactose, sorbitol, mannitol, fructans and GOS). - Improve the nutritional quality of your diet. If you are restricting too many foods for a long period of time, you may be missing out on key nutrients that your body needs! - Optimise your prebiotic intake. Prebiotics are great for promoting healthy gut bacteria and are commonly found in foods that also contain fructans and GOS. Therefore long term dietary restriction may have a negative impact on your gut microbiome. Book an appointment with our Accredited Practicing Dietitian to help you navigate through all 3 phases of the low FODMAP diet to determine your individual tolerance levels, so you can follow the least restrictive diet possible Further reading: https://www.monashfodmap.com//just-2-6-weeks-it-is-not-di/

11.01.2022 COVID-19 Response In response to the threat of Coronavirus COVID- 19, and with the understanding that many of our patients are in a high-risk category, Gippsland Gastro is putting in place a number of new initiatives to minimize risks and maintain our services. We will be updating our Web Page www.gippslandgastro.com and Facebook as well as utilizing SMS and Email to communicate with our patients regularly. We will, of course, be in more direct contact with patients who do... not have access to the Internet or mobile phones. Our first initiatives are as follows; We will be transitioning to remote appointments this week. We can offer Skype, Video calls via smartphone or telephone appointments. We will be sending SMS messages to patients with appointments in the next few weeks shortly with options and a link to instructions. We are preparing a Online Q & A session available to all current patients regarding COVID-19. We hope to have a session up and running for 5:00pm Monday 23 March 2020 and another 11:30am Tuesday 24 March. Interested persons should send an email to [email protected] Our Administrative staff are working hard to meet the extra demands of changing systems and processes while handling a steep increase in patient contacts. If at all possible, inquiries should be direct to staff via email [email protected] or please leave a message on our answering service if you cannot get through. Our staff will return your call but if you do not answer the call you will need to call our office again. If you are ready for our return call, it will save a great deal of playing phone tag. All new referrals will be Triaged by one of our Doctors and non urgent patients, the wait for an appointment is likely to be more delayed than usual. We need to manage demand with the resources we have available. We ask for your patience in this matter. At this time there are no changes to Procedures at Latrobe Regional Hospital and Maryvale Private Hospital. We continue to work with both hospitals to ensure that this continues, however changes may become necessary as circumstances change. Please avoid dropping into the Office if at all possible. Email or call requests for Replacement Prescriptions, Pathology and radiology request slips if necessary and they will be sent by mail or faxed to your local Pharmacy, Pathologist or Imaging provider. Thank you Rosemary Practice Manager
